Orange-scented algae (藻类) could become an unexpected weapon against the world’s growing microplastic pollution crisis. Researchers at the University of Missouri are developing a new way to remove tiny plastic pollutants from water using specially engineered algae.
Susie Dai, a researcher at the University of Missouri, recently created a modified (改良的) strain of algae designed to capture harmful microplastics from polluted water. The modified algae produce limonene, an orange-scented oil that helps them stick to waterproof microplastics. This process works almost like a magnet (磁铁): the algae and microplastics stick together, forming clumps that are easy to remove from water.
The algae not only clean wastewater while growing but also offer a sustainable way to deal with the collected plastic. Dai’s long-term goal is not only to clean waterways but also to recycle the collected plastic into safer bioplastic materials, including mixed plastic films. Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that come from broken-down bottles, bags and other products. They are hard to remove from water because they are so small and waterproof. Traditional water treatment methods often struggle to catch them.
Dai’s team first developed the algae to produce limonene for biofuel. But during their experiments, they noticed that the algae were naturally sticking to microplastics in the water. This unexpected discovery led them to focus on the algae’s potential as a microplastic cleaner.
The team believes this algae-based method could be cheaper and more environmentally friendly than other technologies. Unlike pricey filters (过滤器) or chemicals, the algae grow naturally in water and do not leave harmful waste behind.
They are now working to improve the algae’s ability to absorb different types of microplastics. If successful, this technology could help clean drinking water and wastewater around the world, offering hope in the fight against plastic pollution.
8. What is the main function of the modified algae?
A. To produce orange-scented oil.
B. To develop new plastic materials.
C. To make biofuel for cars and planes.
D. To remove microplastics from water.
9. What does the underlined word “clumps” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Masses. B. Chains. C. Spots. D. Patterns.
10. What can we infer about Susie Dai’s research from the passage?
A. The algae were originally developed to clean microplastics in water.
B. The algae’s ability to stick to microplastics was found by accident.
C. The team has recycled collected microplastics into new products.
D. The technology has been widely used in drinking water treatment.
11. What can we learn about the algae-based method from the passage?
A. It takes less time. B. It uses filters.
C. It is eco-friendly. D. It is expensive.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. C

Chinese researchers have created a lightweight wearable robot for recovery. Published in the journal Nature, the new robot is designed to help children suffering from severe spinal atrophy (SMA) recover their muscle strength through professional training.
SMA is a neuromuscular disorder (神经肌肉紊乱) that affects nerves and causes muscle weakness, limiting patients’ movement. Related symptoms can be relieved through physical treatment such as isokinetic resistance (等速抗阻) training. This form of exercise builds muscle strength by controlling movement speed. However, the equipment required for such training is only available in specialized medical organizations. Besides, these training devices are overly heavy and inconvenient for children to use.
Different from traditional robots that help users move directly, this 0.96-kilogram robot is worn on the knees. It provides adjustable resistance during movement instead of offering direct support. By keeping a steady moving speed and changing resistance properly, it can fully activate (激活) weak muscles and nerves, which helps stop muscles from becoming weaker due to long-term inactivity.
A small clinical test was carried out on six children aged 6 to 10 with SMA Type II. Before the test, none of them could stand up on their own. They received training five days a week for six weeks, and fun interactive games were used to make them willing to keep training. Finally, all the children were able to stand up from a sitting position without any help. Besides, the volume of their leg muscles rose by 19 percent on average, showing clear improvement in their physical condition.
Feng Yangang, the main researcher, said the robot is light and equipped with safety systems, so kids can wear it for a long time safely. Although the present results are satisfying, more tests with more participants are still needed to prove its long-term effects. The research team also plans to apply this technology to more people, including adults who have muscle problems because of illness or old age.
12. What differs the new wearable robot from traditional devices?
A. Supporting kids’ movements to reduce tiredness.
B. Activating muscles by adjustable resistance.
C. Being heavier but lasting for long-term use.
D. Requiring fun games to function properly.
13. What can we learn about the children in the clinical trial?
A. They could stand independently before the trial.
B. Their muscle continued to worsen during the training.
C. Their physical ability and muscle growth were improved.
D. They still needed the robot’s support to stand after the trial.
14. What is the author’s attitude toward the new recovery robot?
A. Doubtful. B. Satisfied. C. Objective. D. Positive.
15. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. A New Robot for Kids with SMA
B. Clinical Tests on Kids with SMA
C. Treatment Methods for SMA
D. The Risks of SMA in Kids
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. A

How AI Helps People Read Ancient Writings
For thousands of years, old paper rolls and clay tablets (泥板) have kept many unknown stories. Now artificial intelligence (AI) offers history researchers a great new tool to understand these old works. ____16____
A well-known project is called the “Vesuvius Challenge”. Some paper rolls from the old city Herculaneum were covered by volcanic ash in 79 AD. ____17____ To work out this difficulty, scientists used special scanning machines and AI to read words on the paper without touching them. In 2024, an international AI competition created a way to “unfold” the rolls on computers and found a lost Greek book about philosophy inside.
AI can also help historians in lots of ways. It can fill in missing words in old writings and quickly translate long books written in ancient languages. ____18____ For example, AI found that one king slowly made more decisions on his own as time went by.
Besides, AI does well in sorting out and matching broken pieces of old objects. A project named “Fragmentarium” collects thousands of broken Babylonian clay tablets online from museums all over the world. ____19____ Once, after matching those pieces, it even discovered new lines from the famous story Epic of Gilgamesh.
____20____ Researchers have to check all information worked out by AI to avoid errors. So technical and history experts should cooperate closely. AI is not meant to replace human researchers, but to support their work better. One researcher said AI provides history workers with information they could never get before, making their research more meaningful. At last, by dealing with large sets of old records, AI allows us to raise new and bigger questions about ancient people and our own history.
A. It can also find hidden rules in records.
B. AI will take over all historians’ jobs one day.
C. Such technology completely changes historical studies.
D. Some researchers doubt AI’s unreliable historical analysis.
E. AI studies these digital scans and fits broken pieces together.
F. They are too easily broken for people to open directly by hand.
G. However, these new findings brought by AI also bring difficulties.

My elder sister worked abroad for ten years. Eventually, she came back to our hometown for a holiday, which made all our family extremely happy. To celebrate her long-expected return, my parents prepared a small family party and lots of delicious food for us to enjoy together.
When I stayed with my sister happily, a brilliant idea struck me: why not go on a family trip to the beach? The moment I put forward the plan, my parents and sister all agreed at once. Our family hadn’t gone out for a trip together for a long time. We valued this chance greatly and decided to set off early the next morning.
The sun shone brightly when we reached our destination with many kinds of food materials, planning to cook fresh seafood and tasty pork. Seeing crowds of tourists enjoying the cool seawater, we couldn’t wait to join them. As soon as my sister and I put our bags in a beach house, we rushed toward the rolling waves while my parents stayed inside to get food ready. As a skilled swimmer, she wanted to dive into the sea. She reminded me repeatedly to stick to shallow (浅的) waters close to the shore, fully aware that I was still a poor swimmer despite being a teenager.
All at once, an abandoned boat caught my eye not far away. Driven by curiosity, I longed to have a ride. Without hesitation, I secretly untied the rope and climbed aboard when no one was watching. The boat sailed slowly into the sea. For several minutes, I floated (漂浮) peacefully, absorbed in the attractive scenery. It was not until later that I found the boat had moved far into the open sea. Dark clouds rolled in rapidly, and fierce winds blew up out of nowhere. The sea turned violent, huge waves crashing fiercely against the boat. I was seized by total panic, having no idea how to control the boat.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】【参考范文】
I felt the boat floating farther and farther away from the shore. Terror gripped me as towering waves swallowed the boat whole, cold water slamming against my body. I waved and screamed until my throat burned raw, but the storm drowned every cry. My sister’s warning echoed in my mind, now a bitter regret. I thought of my parents, of my sister — I feared I might never see them again. Despair began to close in. Just when I had given up hope, a rescue boat appeared, my sister standing at its bow, her face pale with fear. Strong hands pulled me aboard, and I collapsed into her trembling arms.
Seeing me return safe and sound, my family burst into tears. My mother rushed forward, wrapping me tightly. My father knelt beside me, wordless, but his reddened eyes held a thousand unspoken fears. Head bowed, I apologized through tears for my blind recklessness. In that silence, I understood: some lessons are taught by the unforgiving sea, and some bonds only a family’s love can forge.

D

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I felt the boat floating farther and farther away from the shore.
