There’s a list of natural wonders. They are places that have been sources of wonder ever since people walked the Earth. As we are now much more familiar with the geography of our planet than before, these natural wonders have become known to people.
Mount Qomolangma in the Himalayas is the highest mountain on Earth. The Great Barrier Reef along the northeastern coast of Australia is the world’s largest coral reef. The Grand Canyon (峡谷) around the Colorado River in the United States is the largest canyon in the world. Victoria Falls is an amazing 100-metre-high waterfall in Africa, and its 1,700-metre width as well as its height is truly breathtaking. Paricutin is perhaps the world’s youngest volcano (火山). It came out of a cornfield west of Mexico in 1943! In the first year it grew 336 metres high. Now it is 424 metres high. The northern lights are a natural phenomenon (现象) that appears on winter nights in certain areas.
Some may think that these natural wonders are even more wonderful than the man-made wonders. Man-made wonders are built with tools and skills, while natural wonders are gifts from nature, shaped by time and natural forces over thousands of years. Such natural treasures not only show the power and charm (魅力) of nature but also remind us to value and protect the amazing world we live in.
24. Which of the following is the world’s largest coral reef?
A. The Great Barrier Reef B. The Grand Canyon C. Victoria Falls
25. How does the writer introduce Victoria Falls in the passage?
A. By using numbers to show its size.
B. By telling a story about its discovery.
C. By comparing it with other waterfalls.
26. What can we learn about Paricutin from the passage?
A. It grew 424 metres in the first year.
B. It was formed in a cornfield in 1943.
C. It is the tallest volcano in the world.
27. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Man-made wonders are better than natural wonders.
B. Natural wonders are shaped by human skills.
C. We should value and protect the natural world.

What comes to your mind when you hear “a small waterway”? Can a small waterway influence the whole world? The Strait of Hormuz (霍尔木兹海峡) shows us that the answer is yes.
The Strait of Hormuz lies in the southwest of Asia. It is about 150 km long. It is between 56 km and 125 km wide, but the smallest part is only 33 to 48.3 km. Even though it is not large, it is the only waterway from the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean. All oil ships from the Gulf countries must pass through it. That is why people call it the “World Oil Valve” (世界油阀).
In history, the strait was part of the Maritime Silk Road That old sea road connected China with many other countries. People used it to trade silk, tea, and other things. It was very important in trade and cultural exchange in old days. In modern times, the strait is not only important for oil transport but also for relations between countries. Countries near the strait, like Iran and Oman, play a key role in keeping it open. If the strait is closed, oil prices around the world could rise very quickly. That is why many powerful countries pay close attention to this small waterway. Sometimes, some countries send their military (军事的) ships through the strait to show how strong they are. A small problem here may become a big trouble for the whole world.
So the Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important waterways in the world. Though it is small, it can influence oil prices and relations between countries. The more you learn about it, the more it will surprise you.
28. How does the writer start the topic?
A. By asking questions. B. By listing numbers. C. By giving examples.
29. How long is the Strait of Hormuz?
A. About 70 km. B. About 150 km. C. About 219 km.
30. What may happen if the Strait of Hormuz is closed?
A. Oil prices may rise quickly.
B. The strait will become wider.
C. Army’s ships will disappear.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Busy Waterway with Heavy Oil Traffic
B. A Small Waterway with a Long History
C. A Small Waterway with Great Influence
A 29. B 30. A 31. C

根据第二段“It is about 150 km long.”
根据第三段“If the strait is closed, oil prices around the world could rise very quickly.”
A Small Waterway with Great Influence。
Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.
____32____ When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发) into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles (圆圈) and it keeps moving higher in the sky. ____33____ And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins.
A typhoon has two parts. One is called the “eye”. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where the strongest winds and hardest rain are.
____34____ In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan killed around 6,000 people in the Philippines. More people were badly hurt and some others were missing.
____35____
·Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them.
·Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bikes!
·Listen to the radio or watch TV for important information.
·If you’re told to go to a safe place, do it right away.
A. How does a typhoon happen?
B. What should we do when a typhoon hits?
C. Typhoons often happen in the hot months.
D. Typhoons can be very dangerous sometimes.
E. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves.
A 33. E 34. D 35. B
第二段主要介绍台风是如何形成的,如“When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates into the air.”
第二段提到“The wind goes in circles and it keeps moving higher in the sky.”并接着说“And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins.”
第四段提到“In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan killed around 6,000 people in the Philippines.”
Close all the windows… Listen to the radio…”

根据后文“let them take the bigger ones”(让他们拿大的),可知他选的是最小的,体现谦让精神,smallest“最小的”符合语境。

根据后文父亲表扬“You are a good boy”,父亲的态度表明这是对的,right“正确的”符合。

根据父亲说的话“You are a good boy”,表扬意味着满意和高兴,pleased“高兴的”符合。
depend on“依赖”、deal with“处理”,含义不符。

C

D. Typhoons can be very dangerous sometimes.
E. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves.
