Unit 2 Onwards and upwards (限时:35分钟) ●Ⅰ 阅读理解 A [2025·河北部分学校高三第二次质检] 文体:记叙文 主题:人与自我 词数:354 Growing up as a kid in the UK, I was fascinated by insects. Wanting to protect them, I started building houses for ants, using little pieces of wood and leaves. I then moved on to making little cups and saucers from silver foil (箔纸) for the magical creatures. When seeing my work, my mother told me that the smaller I made things, the bigger my name would become. As the years went by, my designs became more complicated. Making sculptures isn’t actually enjoyable. I sometimes work for 16 hours a day without breaks, and it takes me up to three months to finish a sculpture. I have to hold my breath during the sculpting process. One time, a fly landed on a Cinderella carriage sculpture I was working on. The fly’s wings blew it away, and it was lost. I was heartbroken. Another time, I accidentally breathed in a microscopic Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Alice is now in the Wonderland forever. But it did give me the chance to make an even better one the second time around. My sculptures have taken me to incredible places. In 2012, I met the Queen, giving her a crown on the head of a pin. In 2013, I received my first Guinness World Record for creating the smallest sculpture by hand, a 24-carat gold motorbike that fitted inside a hair. In 2017, I beat my record with a sculpture of a human fetus (胎儿) that measured 0.078 mm by 0.053 mm. I was diagnosed with autism (自闭症) as an adult. In school, my teachers had pointed me out as an example of failure; now, I see my autism as a gift. It’s pushed me to be the best I can be. I hold workshops in schools for neurodiverse children, sharing my story and helping them create their own miniature figures. The microscopic world has always been my happy place. I’ve tried to make bigger sculptures, but small is best for me. We need to appreciate the little things in life. Small things can also be mighty. ( )1.What drove the author to make tiny sculptures at the beginning? A.His interest in insects. B.His desire to make a name. C.His dream of setting a record. D.His awareness of wildlife protection. ( )2.Which of the following can best describe the author’s sculpting process? A.Eventful and enjoyable. B.Complex and frustrating. C.Money-wasting but entertaining. D.Time-consuming but fulfilling. ( )3.How does the author deal with his autism now? A.He receives medical treatment. B.He takes full advantage of it. C.He regards it as the source of failure. D.He shares it and asks help from others. ( )4.What message does the author mainly convey through the text? A.Great art comes at a cost of loss. B.Childhood experiences make a career. C.Minor things in life can carry weight. D.Courage contributes to great achievements. B [2025·江西南昌高三二模] 文体:议论文 主题:人与自我 词数:316 What if everything happens for a reason? It’s a theory that we’ve all heard more than once. And in many ways, the burnt toast theory can be seen as a modern take on this classic idea, implying that every little inconvenience we experience in our day-to-day lives happens for a bigger reason. We’ve all been there. Say you accidentally burn your toast before leaving for work. According to the burnt toast theory, this single, tiny inconvenience is enough to have a domino effect (多米诺效应). Your morning is then pushed back by maybe three to five minutes. Perhaps that is enough time to leave the house a little bit later than usual, and to avoid getting in a car accident. Or it might mean you end up getting a later train, and avoid bumping into someone who you’d really rather avoid. In other words, the burnt toast theory is a reminder to shift your thinking pattern. When we choose to view the world in a more positive light, we can help to reduce feelings of anxiety, and release our fear of being out of control of the world around us. It prevents us from thinking over something that isn’t really all that bad in the grand scheme of things and encourages us to make meaning of challenges we may experience, thus making us more adaptive to the future setbacks. The next time you feel yourself becoming annoyed or frustrated by an inconvenience in your life, try reshaping your thoughts by telling yourself why you’re grateful for the inconvenience. While maintaining a positive mindset can go a long way, the burnt toast theory is not without its drawbacks. Be mindful that only allowing yourself to focus on positive thoughts can mean that you are denying yourself the chance to properly engage with challenging or difficult emotions, instead focusing on creating a false positive profile. ( )5.What may be a case of the burnt toast theory? A.Gaining rewards after paying efforts. B.Losing a job after forgetting to set an alarm. C.Meeting a future employer after missing a flight. D.Mending friendship after clearing misunderstandings. ( )6.What is the result of applying the burnt toast theory according to Paragraph 3? A.Better judgement on fears. B.Richer experience from failures. C.The removal of daily inconveniences. D.The harvest of a positive mindset. ( )7.Which aspect of the theory does the last paragraph focus on? A.Would-be projects. B.Real-world applications. C.Potential weaknesses. D.Practical advantages. ( )8.What is probably the best title of the text? A.Less is more B.Make a lemon lemonade C.Once bitten, twice shy D.Better late than never ●Ⅱ 语法填空 [2025·广东深圳高三第二次调研] 文体:记叙文 主题:人与自我 词数:241 For many, cycling to Lhasa is a romantic dream.
