Body language is the act of communicating using anything other than your words. People all around the world use their bodies to express themselves: greeting someone with a hug or a handshake, smiling, frowning, waving, pointing, dancing and so much more. But gestures (手势) that mean one thing in your part of the world can mean something different somewhere else!
Bowing in the Republic of Korea
In the Republic of Korea, you bow when meeting a person for the first time. This gesture can mean “Hello” “Goodbye” “Thank you” or “I’m sorry”. Generally, the lower you bow, the more respect you show to the other person. The longer you keep your head bowed, the more respect you show to others. Depending on where you go, of course, the rules for bowing may be different.
Head Shaking in India
In Western cultures, when we say “yes”, we nod our heads up and down. “No” is swinging the head from left to right. People from India, however, use their heads to express so much more than a simple “yes” or “no”. In India, “yes” is expressed by tilting (使倾斜) the head from one side to the shoulder — the faster the shake, the more certain the “yes” is. This gesture is popular during a conversation to show that the listener is paying attention and being agreeable.
Counting in Russia
If you count on your fingers from one to five, you may start with a balled-up fist (握拳) and gradually uncurl (伸直) each finger. In Russia, people also count with their fingers. To count to five, Russians first open their palms (手掌), then curl their fingers one by one. By “five,” they have a balled-up fist.

Hey kids! Sleep is important! You might have heard of this before. Scientists have found out that sleep helps you grow strong and keeps you from getting sick. And guess what? Sleep also works on your grades, a new study finds.
The scientist, Jeffrey Grossman, wanted to study how sleep helped students do in school. He asked 100 kids from his class to wear a special wristband (腕带) called a Fitbit. This cool thing can tell you how long you sleep and if you wake up a lot during the night. The students wore these bands all term long, and at the end, the scientists looked at their sleep information.
They found some interesting things. As expected, kids who tossed and turned (翻来覆去) a lot at night didn’t do well in their tests. The same went for those who didn’t get enough sleep. But here’s a big surprise. Whether you sleep more or less during the night before the test does nothing to your grades! So is staying up studying before the big test okay? No!!! What really matters is sleeping the same number of hours every night for a week or even a month before the test. That means “a student who sleeps seven hours at night, every night, will do better than a student who sleeps 7.5 hours one night and 6.5 another night,” Grossman said. This is really unexpected!
How long they sleep, how well they sleep, and sleeping the same hours every night together made a big difference to the students’ test scores. And it appeared especially important for boys. Grossman’s team was not sure why. But boys who didn’t sleep well or slept at different times did worse on tests than girls who had the same sleep. These findings show that sleep is really important for doing well in school. And, knowing how to get good sleep can make a big difference!
( ) 44. According to the passage, the Fitbit can ________.
A. help you fall asleep easily
B. tell you how long you sleep
C. fix your sleeping problem
( ) 45. What BIG question does Paragraph 2 answer?
A. How long should we sleep?
B. Why is sleep so important?
C. How did the scientist do the study?
( ) 46. What does the study say about sleeping more or less during the night before a test?
A. It greatly improves your test grades.
B. It does nothing to your grades.
C. It works better for boys than for girls.
( ) 47. According to the study, which line chart may be from the student with the best grades?
A. B. C.
( ) 48. What would the writer write about after the last paragraph?
A. The ways to get better sleep.
B. The result of the study.
C. The importance of sleep.

Have you ever wondered what science is? Well, it is both knowledge about the natural world and a set of methods to explore it.
Science is everywhere. Physics, chemistry and biology are key parts of science. At school, we learn these different subjects because they explain the world in different ways. By learning them, we connect science with the world and use it to solve problems in our daily lives.
Though these subjects have different focuses, they share a common scientific study method. First, we can start by finding a problem and asking some questions. Then, we guess what the answers might be. To examine the answers, we do plenty of tests. After that, check the results again and again. At last, draw a conclusion (结论).
In fact, this study method doesn’t only belong to scientists. Students could use it, too. Let’s take the example of Jia Mingxuan.
Jia Mingxuan, a 14-year-old student, once went on a trip and found the trees couldn’t grow well in dry desert, so he read lots of scientific magazines and asked his teachers for help. He also kept trying many tests. Finally, he invented a self-watering tool and won a gold medal.
To think and act like scientists, some scientific qualities are needed, such as persistence (坚持), creativity, curiosity, logical (逻辑的) thinking and team spirit. They lead us to grow into top talents for our country.
54. What is science?
55. Why do we learn different science subjects?
56. Please Complete the scientific study method with one word in each blank.
57. Why is the example of Jia Mingxuan mentioned?
58. Among the qualities above, which one do you want to develop? And how will you develop this quality?
