Dear Jim,
How is everything going recently? I’m glad you are interested in our school’s survey on the groups that students admired the most. I’m writing to tell you the result.
According to the chart, scientists rank first, accounting for 45% of the votes, which makes them the most admired group. Athletes come second, taking up 25% while medical workers rank third with 15%.
As for my personal choice, scientists are definitely my top admiration. The reason is that their persistent pursuit of truth and innovation has greatly transformed our daily lives, ranging from life-saving medicines to outer-space exploration. What strikes me most is their curiosity and determination, which constantly encourage me to think independently and work diligently in my studies.
What about you? Which group do you admire the most? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

A 13-year-old boy, Jonathan Werner, is breaking a new path when it comes to the Scout (童子军) slogan “Do a Good Turn Daily”. The boy in Troop 506 has got an unusual high rank for someone of that age.
Like many troops, 506 sells popcorn each fall to raise money. In 2019, Jonathan watched as kids who’d made $1,800 or more in sales received a Lego set as a reward. “I really wanted that Lego set,” he says.
The next year, he earned his Lego set. But Troop 506 doesn’t just give out Lego sets. Under its generous reward program, scouts receive a percentage of their sales in gift cards and cash points. Inspired, Jonathan spent the next few years developing some astonishing tricks for selling.
Popcorn too expensive? A simple donation would do. No cash? Credit cards were acceptable. He set up in front of local stores, working 12 hours a day. He even struck a deal with a car dealer: In all his sales efforts, he’d wear a mask with the company’s logo if the owner would buy popcorn for all his employees.
Jonathan started pulling down jaw-dropping numbers. In 2021, he earned $46,193.75 in sales. He might have spent much on himself, but he had other ideas. The popcorn season closes in late November, and the holidays were on his mind — particularly the stories his father, Steve Kolk, had told him about his own days in foster (寄养) care.
“They didn’t really have New Year.” Jonathan says. With $5,000, he could bring New Year to a lot of kids. He shifted from a big seller to a big spender, hand-selecting $5,000 worth of gifts for dozens of kids according to their personal details. Each present must be hand-wrapped. And no kid should get just one gift. If you weren’t unwrapping at least two packages, you weren’t getting the real New Year morning experience that his father never had.
The next year he strengthened his efforts, achieving a higher aim in sales and spending more on gifts. “It really makes me happy,” he says, “the feeling that I’m making those kids happy on New Year.”
29. What originally motivated Jonathan to sell more popcorn?
A. Making money for fostered kids. B. Being persuaded by scout kids.
C. Receiving gift cards and cash points. D. Desiring a toy he dreamed about.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Challenges Jonathan met in sales. B. Help that the car dealer provided.
C. Marketing strategies Jonathan used. D. The role the reward program played.
31. Why did Jonathan turn into a big spender over New Year?
A. He hoped the kids could experience real New Year.
B. His father suggested he should pay it forward.
C. He had earned enough money to spend on gifts.
D. A scout should do this during the popcorn closing season.
32. Which of the following can best describe Jonathan?
A. Modest but pessimistic. B. Generous and cautious.
C. Confident but selfish. D Determined and caring.

Animal-like robots are popular. And yet, says Barbara Mazzolai, an Italian roboticist, the field of robotics is far less interested in exploring the other major category of living things — plants. She puts the unwillingness down to a common assumption that they are capable of neither motion nor perception (感知). “It’s not true at all,” she says.
Dr. Mazzolai and her team recently created FiloBot, a robot based on climbing plants. Like the real thing, FiloBot is capable of growing, attaching to and wrapping itself around supports, and adapting itself to an environment in response to external stimuli.
FiloBot imitates the behaviors of a climbing tree using sensors in its head which is also equipped with a layer of plastic and a heating element. By softening and extruding (挤压出) the plastic in a circular patter, it can 3D-print its own body at a rate of two to seven millimeters per minute. Depending on brightness and direction, it changes the heat that the plastic is exposed to — lower temperatures result in a lighter body that increases in size more quickly, while higher temperatures make it thicker and stronger and grow more slowly.
The researchers found that these simple functionalities were enough to let FiloBot move through a complex and unseen environment, cross gaps and find things to attach to. The lack of heavy on-board computing hardware, they say, means that it moves easily and requires minimal monitoring, while its slow pace means that it doesn’t disturb things around it. They suppose that this makes it suitable for future applications including environmental monitoring in hard-to-reach locations, or monitoring disaster sites where existing equipment is unstable.
Dr. Mazzolai hopes that such projects will motivate other roboticists to draw inspiration from plants. The plant kingdom is a world, she says, with a completely different approach to the animal one. “And we can develop new technologies and artificial solutions, because it is so different.”
33. What leads to limited exploration of plant-like robots?
A. The slow growth rate of plants. B. The lack of plant research capability.
C. The misunderstanding of plant behavior. D. The difficulty of applying plant-like robots.
34. How does FiloBot grow?
A. By pressing a motion sensor. B. By exposing itself to sunlight.
C. By pushing out softened plastic. D. By controlling outside temperature.
35. What advantage does FiloBot have over traditional monitoring robots?
A. It can grow extremely fast without materials.
B. It won’t greatly disturb its surrounding environment.
C. It relies on heavy computing hardware to work.
D. It can operate well under unstable temperatures.
36. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To point out the value of robotics. B. To present a newly invented robot.
C. To call for more research into robots. D. To correct a misconception about plants.
D
You know when you see someone yawn (打哈欠), and suddenly, you find yourself yawning seconds later. It’s possible that, just like a yawn, stress works similarly. Think about how many times you’ve felt stressed out when a family member, or coworker around you was exhibiting symptoms of stress. This phenomenon, known as secondhand anxiety, has been on the rise, particularly in our hyper-connected world.
To truly comprehend secondhand anxiety, we need to look into the neurological (神经学的) basis of empathy and emotional contagion (传染). Our brains are wired for social connection and empathy, which allows us to understand and share the feelings of others. When we observe someone experiencing stress or anxiety, our brains voluntarily begin to mirror their emotional state. This process is driven by mirror neurons, specialized brain cells that fire both when we perform an action and when we observe someone else performing the same action.
Our family, close relationships and workplace environments are all significant sources of secondhand anxiety. However, in the digital age, social media and online interactions have become major contributors. Constant exposure to deliberately designed films of others’ lives, as well as the rapid spread of false news can lead to feelings of failure, fear, and anxiety.
Sometimes, this shared emotional experience is a positive thing — it allows us to connect on a deeper level with those we care about. But when someone’s anxious energy begins to disturb your peace of mind, this empathy can turn poisonous.
Fortunately, there are several strategies we can employ to manage and prevent secondhand anxiety. One of the most important steps is setting limits. If you feel the person is starting to take a toll on you, you can “take strategic escapes”. For example, start your phone calls with a breath and calmly say “I’m so busy.” Learn to say no to taking on others’ problems. Of course, it’s not just other people’s stress that matters — our own mindset affects the happiness of those around us. A positive mindset can improve our own lives, and the lives of everyone around us.
37. Why does the author refer to “yawn” at the beginning?
A. To describe an interesting scene. B. To introduce a similar phenomenon.
C. To present the state of teenagers. D. To show side effects caused by stress.
38. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The activity of brain in easing anxiety. B. The symptoms of secondhand anxiety.
C. The science behind secondhand anxiety. D. The role of brain in regulating our body.
39. What does the underlined phrase “take a toll on” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Have a bad effect on. B. Tell a white lie to.
C. Make threats against. D. Take advantage of.
40. Which of the following can be a suitable title?
A. Emotional Contagion: Can We Get Secondhand Mood?
B. Mental Disorder: The Stress You Suffer from Hard Work.
C. Stress Management: How to Cope with Stress in Our Lives?
D. Secondhand Anxiety: Hidden Impacts of Stress on Our Lives.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Space hotels orbit Saturn (土星)’s pale orange moon, Titan. Have you ever imagined making this future space travel in the fiction films a reality? 41
Large companies and governments have teamed up to make space travel and exploration easier and quicker. Several countries are planning space missions in the future. Some aim to build stations orbiting the moon. 42 Eventually, they may build settlements there!
Yet no human has traveled beyond Earth’s orbit since 1972. Money is part of the problem. To put a pound of anything in space costs about $10,000. Consider that the old NASA space shuttles carried 2.2 million pounds (998,000kg) of fuel alone. Once in space, we face the problem of enormous space. Current technology and fuels can propel (驱动) spacecraft at around 36,000 miles (58,000 km) per hour. 43 Therefore, Human astronauts need some sort of new engine technology. Without it, they would not likely live long enough to complete journeys to other worlds.
44 Some human astronauts live and work in the International Space Station (ISS). They’re in small spaces far from home. Depression may kicks in. Clear thinking becomes muddied. Fear runs high.
Accessing fresh food is another issue. Today, astronauts eat lots of freeze-dried meals. 45 But we need those to be healthy. Worse even, floating in space affects bones, muscles, and blood. The body suffers damage from radiation from stars and supernovas.
A. Others intend to land humans on Mars.
B. Frozen meas don’t benefit us physically.
C. Freezing food reduces its vitamins and minerals.
D. Even if a trip fit within a lifetime, it wouldn’t be easy.
E. In some ways, we are on the edge of this imagined future.
F. With that amazing speed, spacecrafts would carry astronauts to other worlds.
G. Even at that speed, it would take 78,000 years to reach the nearest star system.
