B Jiang Shumei wasn’t educated as a child, learning her first Chinese character at the age of 60. Now, the 87-year-old grandmother is the proud author of six books. She learned her first character in 1996, after her husband died in a car accident, when her daughter Zhang Ailing suggested that she learn to read to take her mind off the loneliness and sorrow. Zhang says that her mother had her own way of learning. Whenever she came across characters she didn’t know at bus stops or shop signs, she found someone to ask. Once Jiang had learned enough characters, Zhang started giving her books to read. Enjoying the books, Jiang told her daughter that she wanted to write down her own stories to share. She first put pen to paper in 2012, at the age of 75. It was not easy. Sometimes, completing a single sentence could take a day. Jiang usually started writing at 3 or 4 a.m., and revised the pieces several times until she was satisfied. Zhang began publishing her mother’s stories on social media platforms in 2013. When Zhang and her mother drew the attention of Zhang’s writer friends, the pair made a decision to publish them. The first book, Time of Trouble, Time of Poverty, was published later that year, and proved to be a success. Some critics even praised it as the “live history of a nation plagued by tough times”. The book earned Jiang a lot of fans and sympathy. So far, the elderly woman has published six books, totaling more than 600, 000 characters in length. She lives a healthy life, exercising every day, drinking milk and soy milk, as well as keeping her daily routine. “If I could live as long as 130, would you still say that it is too late for me to start after 60?” she asks, jokingly. 24. Why did Jiang learn to read in her later years? A. To become a proud author. B. To make up for not going to school. C. To encourage her friends and families. D. To reduce the impact of her husband’s death. 25. What made Jiang decide to publish her first book? A. A strong inner desire. B. The attention from other writers. C. Her daughter’s encouragement. D. The development of social media. 26. What dose the underlined word “plagued” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Aided. B. Enlarged. C. Troubled. D. Defeated. 7. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. One is never too old to learn. B. All roads lead to Rome. C. Where there is life, there is love. D. Gold can’t be pure and man can’t be perfect. C We know that reading is good for children and for adults as well. Now a new study suggests that just being around books has its benefits — even if you don’t read them a lot. A team of researchers in Australia finds that growing up in a home with a sizable library improves literacy, number sense and even technological knowledge in later life. The researchers were interested in what is called the “Radiation Effect”. “Radiation Effect” is a situation where children grow up around books, even though they don’t read them as much as their parents would like them to. But somehow books benefit them. Joanna Sikora, a sociologist at the Australian National University, and her colleagues studied data collected between 2011 and 2015. The survey tested more than 160,000 adults from 31 different societies, and it included a question about how many books testers had in their homes during adolescence “We found that people who grew up around books had better literacy, numeracy and digital problem-solving skills than people who had fewer books growing up but had similar education levels, similar jobs and even similar adult habits.” In fact, teens who only made it through high school but were raised in a bookish environment were successful as well in adulthood as college graduates who grew up in a house lacking books. “So if we grow up in a house, in a home where parents enjoy books, where books are given as birthday presents and cherished and valued, this is something that becomes a part of our identity and gives us this lifelong influence to improve our reading and writing ability.” said Sikora. So keep those shelves filled with books. Your kids will not only be grateful, they’ll be more likely to be able to spell grateful correctly as well. 28. Which is the benefit for children being around books? A. They will work with numbers well. B. They will have a big library at home. C. They will fall in love with literature. D. They will form the habit of reading a lot. 29. The “Radiation Effect” might work for_________. A. a girl who doesn't read books B. a boy who receives higher education C. a girl who visits bookstores a lot D. a boy who grows up without books 30. What do we know from paragraph 4? A. College graduates raised without books are surely not successful. B. Teens, after graduating from high schools, can find better jobs. C. People raised in a bookish environment can solve real-life problems easily. D. Children being around books can be successful in adulthood. 31. What are parents advised to do? A. To have a big collection of books. B. To keep shelves filled with dictionaries. C. To enjoy writing books for children. D. To make kids spell grateful correctly. D Clothing rental is a hot new industry and retailers are demanding to get on board in hopes of attracting green shoppers. But is renting fashion actually more environmentallyfriendly than buying it, and if so, how much more? Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline investigated this question and concluded that it's not as sustainable as it seems. Take shipping, for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented—receiving and returning. Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon footprint of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing. She writes, "An item ordered online and then returned can send out 20 kilograms of carbon each way, and increases up to 50 kilograms for rush shipping. By comparison, the carbon impact of a pair of jeans purchased from a physical store and washed and worn at home is 33.4 kilograms, according to a 2015 study by Levi's." Then there's the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when it's returned, regardless of whether or not it was worn. For most rental services, this usually means dry cleaning, a high impact and polluting process. All the rental services that Cline looked into have replaced perchloroethylene, an air pollutant that causes cancers, still used by 70 percent of US dry cleaners, with alternatives, although these aren't great, either. Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it's so easily accessible. There's something called "share washing" that makes people waste more precisely because a product or service is shared and thus is regarded as more ecofriendly. Uber is one example of this, advertised as "a way to share rides and limit car ownership." and yet "it has been proven to discourage walking, bicycling, and public transportation use." Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and throwing them in the dustbin after a few wears, but we shouldn't let the availability of these services make us too satisfied. There's an even better step—that's wearing what is already in the closet. 32.What is Elizabeth Cline's attitude toward clothing rental? A.Approving. B.Unfavorable. C.Objective. D.Enthusiastic. 33.The Uber example in paragraph 6 indicates that ________. A.rental services are on the rise B.clothing rental will be as successful as Uber C.renting clothes might waste more than expected D.renting clothes might make people lose interest in fast fashion 34.The author suggests that we should ________. A.give up renting any clothing B.purchase inexpensive clothes C.rent clothes rather than buy them D.make full use of clothes we've possessed 35.What is the passage mainly about? A.Clothing rental is a new fashion. B.Clothing rental is retailers' preference. C.Renting clothes is not that ecofriendly. D.Rentingclothes business is in a dilemma. FOMO stands for “fear of missing out”. It refers to the nervous or anxious feeling a person gets when they realize they are not attending a social event either because they weren't invited or they just didn't feel like going. 36 This belief, in turn, can create nervousness and a sense of inferiority. FOMO bothers most teens, especially if they're often online. One way for teens to deal with FOMO is to practice what is known as reframing thinking. It's a mental exercise aimed at helping them look at situations differently. 37 Pay attention to negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. One thing teens can do to deal with FOMO is to put down their negative thoughts and feelings in a diary. 38 Then, they remind themselves to try to see things from a different angle and in an active way. 39 Encourage teens to understand that they have limited time and cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. Therefore, it is natural that there will be social events that they cannot attend. But this does not mean that they're necessarily missing out on something. Turn off the technology and do something else. Turning off the technology seems like a natural solution to FOMO. But just switching the phone off does not erase the feelings that FOMO causes. 40 The key is to do something else entirely like reading a book or baking cookies — anything that allows them to focus on something other than social media. A.Be realistic about availability. B.There are some negative results of FOMO. C.Realize that no one lives a perfect life as described in social media. D.Here are some tips on how teens can start to reshape their thought. E.In general, FOMO causes people to think that they are not socially important. F.Teens may still worry about missing out even if they're not in social media at all. G.This allows them to see how often they're feeling terrible about themselves. Lilla’s been sick since born. 根据最后一段中“So keep those shelves filled with books.(因此让书架上装满书籍)”可知,文章建议父母多收藏书。故选A项。 Elizabeth Cline investigated this question and concluded that it's not as sustainable as it seems"Elizabeth Cline通过调查得出的结论是租衣服并不像看上去那么环保;再根据第四段她引用具体的数字指出在服装租赁过程中碳的排放量比在实体店购买、洗涤过程中所排放的量要大,可知,她并不支持服装租赁这种做法。 There's something called ‘share washing' that makes people waste more ... and yet ‘it has been proven to discourage walking, bicycling, and public transportation use.'" There's an even better step—that's wearing what is already in the closet." 根据上文“It refers to the nervous or anxious feeling a person gets when they realize they are not attending a social event either because they weren't invited or they just didn't feel like going.(它指的是当一个人意识到自己没有参加社交活动时的紧张或焦虑感,要么是因为他们没有被邀请,要么就是他们不想去)”可知,选项承接上文说明错失恐惧症’带来的负面影响。故E项“In general, FOMO causes people to assume that they have a low social rank.(一般来说,“错失恐惧症”会让人们认为自己的社会地位较低)”切题。故选E项。 37.根据上文“One way for teens to deal with FOMO is to practice what is known as reframing thinking. It's a mental exercise aimed at helping them look at situations differently.( 青少年应对FOMO的一种方法是练习所谓的重构思维。 38.根据上文“One thing teens can do to deal with FOMO is to track their negative thoughts and feelings in a journal.(青少年可以做的一件事就是在日记中记录他们的消极想法和感受)”建议是青少年用日记的方式记录消极想法和感受,G项“This allows them to observe how often they're feeling negative about themselves.(这可以让他们观察到自己产生消极想法和感受的频率)”中This指代的正是“记录消极想法和感受”这种行为,且说明上文产生的结果。故选G项。 39.根据下文“Encourage teens to recognize that they have limited time and cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. So, naturally, there will be social events that they cannot attend.(鼓励青少年认识到他们的时间是有限的,不可能无处不在,无所不能。 A项“Be realistic about availability.(对可能性要实际一些)”切题,为本段的小标题。故选A项。 40.上文“But just switching the phone off does not erase the feelings that FOMO causes.(但是仅仅关掉手机并不能消除“错失恐惧症”引起的感觉)”可知,选项承接上文说明其原因。故 F项“Teens may still worry about missing out even if they’re not in social media at all.(即使不使用社交媒体,青少年可能仍然会担心错过机会)”切题。故选F项。 41. A 42. B 43. C 44. D 45. D 46. C 47. B 48. C 49. A 50. D 51. A 52. A 53. C 54. B 55.
