One day, Mr Black gave us a lesson. He wanted us to be active in class, so he asked us some questions, but no one answered. “At the beginning of the class, let me tell you a story”, he said. “When I went to the United States to study, the university often invited famous people to make speeches. Before the beginning of every speech, I found an interesting thing. The students around me always took a piece of paper folded in half, wrote their names in bold (粗体) with the most eye-catching color, and then placed the paper on the seat. So when the speaker needed answers from the students, he could see and call their names directly. My classmates told me that the speakers were all top people who meant chances. When your answer is excellent, it means they might give you more chances. In fact, I really saw a few students get great chances because of that.” After listening to the story, I understood that the chance will not find you itself. It is no exaggeration (夸张) to say within Hutong lives the city’s history. Every year, it receives more tourists from home and abroad than the high-rise buildings. The word “Hutong” referred to a place where people lived, which was borrowed from the Mongolian word to mean “water well” about 700 years ago. Until now, one can still find dry wells in Hutong. Hutong we see today are made up of small paths (小路) formed by walls of siheyuan. They were built during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. When the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, there were more than 3,000 Hutong. Most of the city’s population lived in this traditional housing. But with the development of the city in the 1980s and early 1990s, many Hutong were demolished to build roads, skyscrapers (摩天大楼) and modern houses. The government has realized the importance of Hutong to Chinese culture. In 2002, Beijing listed 40 protected historical zones and increased its efforts to rebuild some key remains and older streets in the city. Nearly 500 Hutong have been saved. Hutong that still exist are like oases (绿洲) of calm in the noisy city. Although located downtown, the Hutong are free from the noise of traffic, as they are too narrow to bear much. Walking through them, it’s common to see groups of elderly people sitting together playing cards, mahjong or Chinese chess. Thanks to smart algorithms (运算法则), they can move smoothly, like walking naturally or even doing front flips (空翻). Each robot costs 88,000 yuan, which is affordable for the police to use. The PM01 uses LiDAR technology to “see” its surroundings and move around busy streets. There is a screen on its chest to show information and “eye-like” lights that make it look friendly. So when the speaker needed answers from the students, he could see and call their names directly. My classmates told me that the speakers were all top people who meant chances. When your answer is excellent, it means they might give you more chances. In the early mornings and evenings, they get together to practice traditional forms of exercise such as Taiji as well as dancing and singing folk songs or Beijing Opera. Engine AI, a company started in 2023 in Shenzhen, made them. It is part of China’s plan to use technology in everyday life. The PM01 robots are 1.38 meters tall and weigh 40 kilograms. They can share information with real police, shake hands with people on the street, and wave to crowds. These features help the robot do its job well and make people trust it. People have different opinions about these robots. Some like their human-like skills, while others worry that they might replace people’s jobs or cause privacy problems. As China continues to develop new robots, it remains to be seen whether they will become a big part of our daily life or just a special tool. 36. What is the main purpose of using PM01 robots? A. To replace Shenzhen real police officers completely. B. To improve public safety and work with the police. C. To help people who get lost find their way home. D. To make people’s everyday life more colorful. 37. What can PM01 robots do to communicate with the public? A. Sing songs and tell stories to kids. B. Answer calls and send messages. C. Shake hands and wave to people. D. Take photos and record videos. 38. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. The screen. B. The chest. C. The light. D. The robot. 39. Why do some people worry about the PM01 robots? A. They are not smart enough to help in busy streets. B. They are unable to understand human languages. C. They may cause job losses or privacy problems. D. They are too expensive for governments to use. 40. What is the best title for this passage? A. How to Make Police Robots Work Well B.
