When I was a kid, my mom would let me help her make popcorn on cold winter nights. We would get out a pan, some oil and butter (黄油), and wait for the first popcorn to jump with an exciting sound. Then, we would shake the pan over the stove (炉子) to keep the popcorn from burning—shake, shake, shake, and pop, pop, pop—until the pan was filled with delicious popcorn! Mom would pour it all into a big bowl and add some sugar on top.
Later, we would all come to the living room. Dad would sit in his chair, while my mom, brothers, and I would relax on the sofa. There was always a lot of popcorn to share, and mom even let me eat the half-popped kernels (玉米粒).
The funny thing is that I have already forgotten the shows we watched, but I still remember the smell of the popcorn, the warmth of the bowl, and the joy of being with my family. I felt so loved, safe and happy. We didn’t have a big house, expensive snacks or much money, but our love for each other was everything.

Almost all animals need to sleep to stay healthy. But sleeping can be dangerous because other animals may hunt sleeping animals. To help them stay safe, animals have many different ways of sleeping. Some of these ways may surprise you!
Some seabirds can sleep while they fly. These large birds spend most of their lives over the ocean. They are in danger on the water, but they are safe in the air. They glide (滑行) for many hours without moving their wings up and down. Sometimes they sleep while they glide.
A dolphin sleeps with just half its brain at a time. It must stay awake to breathe and to watch for danger. Dolphins can swim without sleep for two months to stay safe. Ducks sleep with just half their brains, too. These ducks often sleep in a line. The ducks at both ends help keep the group safe. They keep one eye open to watch for danger. The ducks in the middle sleep with both eyes closed.
Seals breathe air, but that doesn’t stop them from sleeping underwater. They hold their breath and dive (潜水) deep to sleep for up to twenty minutes at a time. Some fish make their own sleeping bags. They make a big bubble and sleep inside it. It also keeps other animals from smelling them. If an animal hits the bubble, the fish swims away quickly.
9. Why do animals have different ways of sleeping?
A. To hunt other animals. B. To make themselves safe.
C. To surprise other animals. D. To keep themselves healthy.

The Spring Festival, the most important Chinese festival, comes with a long-standing tradition: cleaning for the New Year. For weeks before the festival, families across China are busy working together to clean every corner of their homes. This tradition is not just about making the house spotless (一尘不染的); people believe it can sweep away bad luck from the past year and welcome good luck for the new year.
The cleaning follows a careful order. People usually start with cleaning ceilings (天花板) and shelves. They then clean windows until they shine. Next, it’s time to organize closets (衣橱). People usually give away old clothes they don’t need anymore. “_______13_______” is a common saying during this time.
For families with pets, the cleaning tradition extends (扩展) to their animal friends. In my family, my mother usually takes our dog to get special baths in the pet shop. My father buys new red clothes for it to match the festival.
After the cleaning comes the really fun part — decorating the house! Families put up red couplets on their doors with hopeful words. They also hang red lanterns and decorate windows with colorful paper cuts.
Though everyone might feel tired after a long day of cleaning, the new and clean home makes all the work worthwhile. When New Year’s Eve arrives, families gather in their spotless homes. As fireworks (烟花) light up the night sky outside, everyone enjoys delicious food and a happy time together. The cleaning makes the new year feel bright and full of hope.
13. What can we put back into the blank “_________”?
A. Pieces for peace. B. Bad news travels fast.

四、阅读与表达 (共4小题,1-3小题,每小题2分,4小题4分;满分10分)
Travel used to be about sightseeing, but now it is about experiences. Nowadays, there are a lot of new ways to travel. They can bring people special experiences.
“Military-style (特种兵式) travel” is one of the most popular travel ways among Chinese college students. They spend a little money traveling to as many places as they can, without having enough rest or sleep. For example, a young man called Nan Duoduo climbed the Five Great Mountains in China within only five days.
“Reverse (反向的) travel” is a new fashion among young Chinese travelers. “A man moved 1 meter every 10 minutes on Mount Huangshan” became a hot topic on the Internet during last year’s National Day holiday. More and more people don’t want to go to those famous places on holiday because they are too crowded (拥挤的). They like to spend their free time in less popular places to make themselves relaxed.
“Seal (印章)-collecting travel” means tourists collect seals while traveling. It’s really special and meaningful. People usually collect seals from places of interest, shops, and other places. Every time you open your collection, it brings back beautiful moments.
The winter vacation is coming soon. Do you have any travel plans? Choose your favourite way to travel with your family!

Seals breathe air, but that doesn’t stop them from sleeping underwater. They hold their breath and dive (潜水) deep to sleep for up to twenty minutes at a time. Some fish make their own sleeping bags.
