Most of my classmates spent their summer vacations traveling to famous places. However, my family’s plan had to change because something unexpected happened. I stayed at home for two weeks, feeling very disappointed. “This will be the most boring holiday ever,” I thought.
My mom noticed my low spirits and said, “Why not be a tourist in our own city?” I shrugged (耸肩), but with nothing else to do, I agreed. We looked everywhere at home and dug out an old travel book in a box. Then I made a plan.
The next day, we visited the city museum that I hadn’t been to since primary school. To my surprise, the new history show was fascinating. The next day, we explored a beautiful park of the city. We had a picnic and flew kites. We even took a cycling tour along the river. I never thought I would do it one day. I took photos of famous buildings and tried street food I didn’t notice before. I discovered special cafes and interesting small shops in old streets.
I learned to see my city in a new way. I didn’t need to go far to explore. I realized that a “staycation” (宅度假) could be as enjoyable as going away, and it was certainly cheaper and more relaxing. It taught me that where to spend vacation doesn’t matter, but your thought matters.

C. Because she disliked traveling to famous places. D. Because her mom asked her to travel in their own city.

20. What changed the writer’s opinion about vacation?
A. Exploring her own city. B. Reading the travel book.
C. Her mother’s travel stories. D. Staying at home doing nothing.

In many parents’ eyes, their children don’t like doing chores. Even if the room is untidy, they still play computer games instead of cleaning the room. But in Australia, Jim and Robert’s mother, Mrs Black, comes up with a good way to get her children to do housework.
“Mum, have you worked out next week’s chores? Let Jim and me choose the cards. I can’t wait. It’s fun!” When Robert shouted out, his mother had already put all the cards on their big table. On the cards, there are some words like “sweep the floor”, “clean your bedroom”, “help Mum cook” and many others. Jim and Robert each chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the weekday task board. Jim likes to clean the bathroom, so he first picked up his favourite card “clean the bathroom”. Robert first picked up the card with “make the bed”. Then they chose chores for the next days.
To help the children realize the importance of duty in the family, their mother thought hard and ended up with this idea of making them do chores happily. Of course, the parents do the chores on weekends and leave Jim and Robert two days free.

In a rainforest there are tall trees. The top of these trees is called the “canopy”. It is a world of life. Scientists want to study the plants and animals that live there, but reaching the top is not easy.
A scientist named Meg knows a lot about trees. People often call her “Canopy Meg”. When she was a child, she built tree houses and saved birds that fell from their nests (巢). Now, she has climbed trees all over the world—from hot rainforests to cooler forests.
To study the canopy safely, Meg had the idea to build “walkways” between the trees. These walkways are like bridges. They let people walk high above the ground without hurting the trees. They are popular with scientists and visitors. However, walkways cannot reach the very top of the canopy, and there are still many mysteries (神秘的事) there. So, Meg uses a “canopy raft”. It is a light raft filled with air. A hot air balloon drops it onto the trees. Scientists can stand on it and watch the life in the canopy closely. Another way is to use a “tower crane”. It can move up and down, carrying scientists from the ground to above the treetops.
With these tools, scientists have found many insects living in the canopy, eating the leaves. Meg and her sons have had many exciting experiences, even sleeping in the trees and trying eating bugs (虫子). Their work is very important to the study of ecosystem.
Meg’s job is to find out more secrets of the treetops. She believes there are still lots of animals waiting to be discovered. Her work shows that the canopy is not just the top of the trees—it is a new world for science.
