Long ago, before clocks were invented, people used simple things from daily life to know how much time passed. Let’s explore some!

An incense (香) stick The most common way to measure (测) time in ancient China was by burning incense sticks, called “一炷香” in Chinese. It worked day and night and was easy to carry and simple to make. An incense stick usually took about half an hour to burn.

A cup of tea “一盏茶” was about 15 minutes long. The teacup came with a lid (盖子) and a small plate so people could drink slowly and keep tea leaves out of their mouths. The time it took for a cup of tea to be served and cooled down changed with the weather. In summer, cooling the tea took about 15 minutes, while in winter, it was faster — sometimes just 10 minutes.

A pot of wine Finishing a pot of wine took about one shichen, which equated (等同于) to two hours in modern times.

A meal A meal was about half a shichen long. But in modern times, people usually spend around half an hour for a meal.

Rules are everywhere! They tell us how to behave (行为). When we were kids, our parents told us to “be polite and honest”. At school, we should always “arrive on time” and “raise our hand to speak.” There are even rules for having fun—every sport has rules.

But some rules develop over time and vary (变化) across countries, such as traffic rules. In 1868, the first traffic lights appeared in England. Later, in 1914, the first electric traffic lights were introduced in the United States. These developments helped establish (建立) traffic rules to manage the growing number of cars. By the early 20th century, driving rules became more common and widely followed. In most countries, such as China, Germany and Canada, people drive on the right-hand side of the road. In other countries, such as the UK, Australia and India, people drive on the left. However, the aim (目标) of traffic rules is the same everywhere: to keep people safe and the traffic moving.

Can you imagine a world without rules? Surely it will be difficult and dangerous for everyone. To stay safe, we should follow the rules.

Passage 3

 

Hawaii’s regular (规律的) sunshine, short rain showers and clean air come together to create some of the planet’s best conditions for viewing rainbows. Rainbows are seen so often here that a University of Hawaii professor calls the state the “rainbow capital of the world”.

“Hawaii has maybe the best rainbows on the planet,” said Steven Businger, professor of atmospheric (大气的) sciences at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

He has even created an app called RainbowChase to help people find rainbows in Hawaii.

Rainbows form when drops of rain refract (折射) sunlight into different colors. The brighter the sun, the clearer the rainbow.
