“I don’t like my parents. They always tell me I should do this, and should not do that. It sometimes makes me angry,” said Li Hao, a middle school student in Xiangtan. Do you have the same problem? Why does it seem that some parents are not so friendly in their children’s eyes?
One of the biggest things is when someone becomes a parent, he or she likes worrying about things. They worry about everything about you. They worry about your choice of friends, the food you eat, your work at school, how much sleep you get, etc. They want you to grow up healthily and happily.
So how can you make things easier on yourself? It’s easier than you think. Just make sure your parents know what you’re doing. Get them to know your friends. Call them if you stay somewhere else or go back home late so that your parents don’t call everybody to look for you. Say sorry to them when you make mistakes. Take responsibility (责任) for what you did.
Most of all, try to think about why your parents do this or do that. They are still practicing being parents and need help from you. Someday, when you become a parent, they may be able to help you get on with your children.
24. What’s Li Hao’s problem?
A. His parents are always angry with him.
B. His parents always tell him what to do or not to do.
C. He doesn’t get along with his family.
25. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. What parents’ worries are.
B. What parents should do every day.
C. How the children grow up healthily.
26. What should you do if you have to go back home later than usual?
A. Make little noise when returning home.
B. Make your parents know your friends.
C. Give your parents a call.
27. What can you learn from the passage?
A. Parents seldom worry about their kids.
B. Parents really care for their children almost all the time.
C. Parents don’t need to learn how to take good care of kids.

In December, 2025, a terrible tsunami hit Japan. There was a huge earthquake under the sea. Huge waves rushed towards the land. They caused serious damage (损害), and many families lost their homes.
Japan is not the only country that has experienced a large tsunami. In 2004, there was a big earthquake under the Indian Ocean. The tsunami reached many countries, such as Thailand, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
In Sri Lanka, something interesting happened before the tsunami arrived. Just before the big waves came, many animals started to run away. Elephants were very nervous and tried to get far from the sea. Flamingos flew off together and left the area. But the tsunami was a big shock to humans — no one knew it was coming. So how did the animals know about it earlier than people did?
In Japan, some people are trying a new animal warning system (系统). Many believe that animals, such as dogs or chickens, become nervous before an earthquake. In Susaki, a small town in Japan, people check how their pets behave. If they notice that their cat or dog looks worried, they can call a special phone number.
Can animals really predict (预测) earthquakes and other natural disasters? Can they save lives? No one really knows. But perhaps animals know more than we do.
28. What happened in Japan in December, 2025?
A. Cold weather hit the country.
B. A big fire spread in many cities.
C. A tsunami caused serious damage.
29. What does the underlined “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The animal. B. The tsunami. C. The sea.
30. What do people in Susaki do when their pets behave nervously?
A. They leave their homes at once.
B. They take pets to the hospital.
C. They call a special phone number.
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Do animals really live near the sea?
B. Can animals predict disasters?

Many of us are used to greeting each other by shaking hands or hugging, which comes from Western customs. Do you know any customs of ancient Chinese people?
How to greet
They usually used “zuoyi” gesture (作揖礼). To make this gesture, one needs to bow at an angle (角度) of 30 to 45 degrees with hands folded in the front. The rules are different for men and women. For men, the left hand is put over the right hand. But for women, the right hand is on the top.
The Duke of Zhou created the gesture during the Western Zhou Dynasty. Folding one’s hands shows others that you don’t have anything dangerous and haven’t come to fight.
How to welcome guests
When guests come, an old custom is that a host should welcome guests with boiled tea. Boiling tea is one of the oldest ways of brewing Chinese tea. It started in the Tang Dynasty. Later, in the Ming Dynasty, a faster way took its place- steeping (冲泡). Nowadays, weilu zhucha is getting popular again among Chinese young people. They like to sit around a stove, boil tea on it, eat some snacks and have a talk.
How to say goodbye
In ancient China, when people parted with friends, they always used willow (柳树) branches as a gift. One reason is that willow trees are strong. They can live anywhere, wet or dry, north or south. Because of this, giving a willow branch to say goodbye to loved ones is a way to tell them that you hope they will easily adapt to (适应) their new living environment.
It’s said that this custom became popular during the Han Dynasty. At that time, Baqiao, a bridge in Chang’an (today’s Xi’an) was a common place to say goodbye.
