A White Whale Changed My Life
This is the ninth year that I have been calling for an end to whale shows. I was the first female whale trainer in South China, but an unforgettable experience with a white whale named Sophie changed me.
One day in 2012, I was having a show underwater with Sophie at an aquarium (水族馆). Suddenly, she bit (咬) my arm and pulled me down into the deep water again and again. I tried hard to break away, but I could not. I felt very afraid and closed my eyes hopelessly.
Before I passed out, Sophie, to my surprise, gently let go of my arm and pushed (推动) me out of the water. At that moment, I looked into her sad eyes. Maybe she wanted someone to help her. Later, Sophie still finished the show with me.
After that unusual day, I started reading many books about white whales and learned that they swim hundreds of kilometers every day and live in close family groups. But at the aquarium, Sophie was kept in a small pool alone. I couldn’t bring myself to watch her suffer (受苦), so I no longer trained her.
I left my job as a trainer that month. I posted videos online to show how hard Sophie’s life was in the aquarium. She swam around the pool all day, broke her teeth by biting the pool walls, and acted strangely because of stress (压力). I tried my best to ask the aquarium to let her go back to the sea. However, it was not easy at all.
In 2023, I got bad news: Sophie died. I was heartbroken — she was only 20 years old! White whales can live to 70 or 80 years in the wild. With tears in my eyes, I wrote on Weibo, “Wishing Sophie could go back to the sea and meet her family...”
21. What did Sophie do during the show in 2012?
A. She bit the pool walls while swimming around. B. She broke away from the trainer while dancing.
C. She saved the trainer after putting her in danger. D. She ended the show early after hurting the trainer.
22. Why did the writer stop training Sophie?
A. Sophie was unwilling to work with her. B. The aquarium asked her to leave her job.
C. She felt sorry for what Sophie went through. D. She planned to post videos of Sophie online.
23. Which of the following would the writer support?
A. Keeping whales in large pools to feed them. B. Watching whale shows to know them better.
C. Training whales gently to make their work easier. D. Freeing whales to the natural home to protect them.
C
What color is Antarctica (南极洲)? Most people would say it is white. However, today, parts of Antarctica are turning green. Green plants and even some flowers are beginning to grow on this cold land. This may sound beautiful, but is this a good thing?
Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth and is almost covered with thick ice and snow. But nowadays, in some parts of Antarctica, the temperature rose (升高) by nearly 3℃ over the past 50 years. As the weather gets warmer, some ice melts during summer, and large pieces of ice break off and fall into the ocean. These changes make it easier for plants to grow on land that was freezing cold with ice or snow all year round.
The growth of green plants in Antarctica may seem amazing, but it can make the Earth even warmer. Antarctica acts like a large mirror (镜子). It pushes the sunlight back into space to keep our planet cool. However, as the ice turns into water and green plants grow, dark and green colors show up. The green plants are like a black T-shirt in summer — they keep more heat (热量). This makes the Earth even warmer, and then more ice melts.
This creates serious problems for the whole world. First, melting ice in Antarctica makes sea levels (海平面) go up. This means many cities by the sea may be under water. People there will have to leave their homes. The higher temperatures are also bad for farming. It is too hot for plants to grow well. We may not have enough food to eat. Besides, the hot weather makes people sick more often.
Recently, scientists have done some research in Antarctica to study these changes. They also use satellites (卫星) in space to see how the land is changing. Their study helps us understand that what happens in Antarctica does not stay in Antarctica — it can affect the whole planet. We must act now to keep our planet from getting warmer before it’s too late.
24. How do green plants in Antarctica make the Earth warmer?
A. They change the color of the ice. B. They block sunlight from the space.
C. Their fast growth gives off more heat. D. Their dark colors take in more sunlight.
25. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. People living near the sea may move inland. B. Summer in Antarctica gets longer than before.
C. The melting ice will give more energy to plants. D. Scientists use satellites to make Antarctica cooler.
26. What is the best title for the passage?
A. From Quiet to Lively: People Are Acting. B. From Ice to Water: Sea Levels Are Going Up.
C. From White to Green: Antarctica Is Changing. D. From Cold to Warm: The Temperature Is Rising.
D
Many people think it helps to “sleep on it” when facing a difficult problem. They choose to leave it until the next day to carefully think over what to do next. After all, a good night’s rest can relax our mind and make our thinking much clearer.
However, a new study from Neuroscience of Consciousness shows that dreaming plays an active role in solving (解决) problems, especially during REM sleep — when our eyes move really fast and we have most of our dreams.
In the study, scientists prepared some difficult puzzles (谜题) and matched each puzzle with a special piece of soft music. They invited 20 students to solve the puzzles while listening to the matching music. Each student needed to solve all the puzzles, and they had only three minutes for each one, so most of the puzzles stayed unsolved in the end.
After that, these students went to sleep in a quiet lab while scientists carefully recorded their brain activities with special equipment. Before falling asleep, all students were told that if they dreamed about any unsolved puzzle, they should keep thinking and working on it in their mind. When they were in REM sleep, scientists played the music for half of the unsolved puzzles, with no music played for the other half for comparison (对比).
The next morning, the 20 students shared their real dream experiences. About 75% of them reported that they dreamed about the unsolved puzzles. Among them, 60% said the puzzles with the matching music showed up more often in their dreams than the others without music.
All puzzles were more likely to be solved after one night’s sleep. But surprisingly, the ones that showed up in dreams were 42% more likely to be solved, while the others improved (提升) by only 17%.
This study shows that dreaming about a problem lets the brain reorganize (重构) information, and may develop insight. It gives us sudden new ideas and makes the problem easier to work out. So next time when you meet a difficult problem in study, do not just sleep on it. Think carefully before bed. Your brain may keep working during dreams, helping you find the answer.
27. Why were many puzzles not solved before the students went to sleep?
A. They had quite little time for each puzzle. B. They knew the puzzles would show up later.
C. The special puzzles were boring to work out. D. The matching music made them feel relaxed.
28. What can we learn about the study?
A. Students finished musical puzzles better during the day.
B. Over half of the students dreamed about the unsolved puzzles.
C. Music-free puzzles showed up in even more students’ dreams.
D. Scientists played music for most unsolved puzzles in REM sleep.
29. The word “insight” in Paragraph 7 probably means ________.
A. a good way to manage dreams B. a new skill to improve learning
C. a large collection of information D. a clear understanding of a problem
30. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To guide students to get enough sleep every day.
B. To share sleep habits for clear minds with students.
C. To introduce ways to have better dreams to students.
D. To encourage students to think deeply before sleeping.
Today, many students and their parents are very busy. After a long day of study or work, nobody wants to spend hours in the kitchen. That is why eating easy-peasy food is becoming part of a popular lifestyle. This does not mean eating unhealthy food or fast food. It means having meals that are good for your health in an easy way.
Nowadays, this eating style has become very popular on blogs. If you go on social media (社交媒体), you can often see pictures of colorful “food bowls”. Why do people love these so much? First, making them saves a lot of time because people only need to wash, cut, and put the food together. Even a student can prepare a fantastic meal in a short time. Second, these meals look beautiful. The bright colors of red tomatoes, green cabbages, and yellow eggs make people feel happy and hungry. And people usually enjoy sharing pictures of their colorful dishes with friends online.
More importantly, easy-peasy food is really good for your health. Some traditional ways of cooking use too much oil or salt. If you cook cabbages or carrots for too long, the food may lose some nutrients (营养). Also, eating heavy meals usually makes people feel sleepy in class. However, easy-peasy meals use fresh and natural ingredients (食材). A usual easy-peasy meal has some green vegetables, a little meat or a few eggs, and some corn or noodles. You can cook the food lightly or even eat it fresh. In this way, you keep most of the nutrients. This is also a good choice for students. It gives them energy for school work and keeps their bodies fit.
A healthy diet doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult. The easy-peasy food idea teaches people a useful lesson: the simple way is the best. We don’t need a professional (专业的) cook to eat well. By putting a few fresh foods together, anyone can enjoy a healthy and happy life.
31. What does eating easy-peasy food mean?
_________________________________________________________
32. Why does making these “food bowls” save a lot of time?
_________________________________________________________
33. How do people keep most of the nutrients in easy-peasy food?

34. Would you like to choose “easy-peasy food” as your dinner? Why or why not? (Give at least two reasons.)

根据“Who picks the most guavas”可知,两人在比赛,摘得最多的人自然是“赢家”,winner符合语境。
根据最后一段“The guava in my bedroom drawer slowly became dry and wrinkled”可知,作者把番石榴藏在了卧室的“抽屉”里,drawer符合语境。
work out算出、锻炼;carry on继续;show off炫耀,均不符合逃避的心理。
根据前文“I hung my head.”
take sth. from one’s hand固定搭配,意为“从某人手中拿取某物”;borrow借入、steal偷窃、find找到,语义和搭配均不成立。

C 22. C 23. D
根据第四段原文“I couldn’t bring myself to watch her suffer, so I no longer trained her.”

D 25. A 26. C
根据文章第3段“However, as the ice turns into water and green plants grow, dark and green colors show up. The green plants are like a black T‑shirt in summer—they keep more heat.”
根据文章第4段“melting ice in Antarctica makes sea levels go up. This means many cities by the sea may be under water. People there will have to leave their homes.”
A 28. B 29. D 30. D

原文第五段提到“About 75% of them reported that they dreamed about the unsolved puzzles.”,75%超过一半,说明了超过半数学生梦到了未解开的谜题。
原文第七段提到“This study shows that dreaming about a problem lets the brain reorganize (重构) information, and may develop insight. It gives us sudden new ideas and makes the problem easier to work out.”,后文解释它能带来新思路、方便解开难题,说明了insight指对问题清晰的理解。
原文第七段提到“So next time when you meet a difficult problem in study, do not just sleep on it. Think carefully before bed.”,说明了作者写作目的是鼓励学生睡前深入思考难题。

五、阅读表达(第31—33题每题2分,第34题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
