One day when Jakey went outside to play, he found a possum in a window well. “Hello, possum,” Jakey said. “How did you get down there?”
Jakey’s brothers, Artie and Danny, came around. “What do you have there, Jakey?”
“A stuck (困住) possum,” Jakey said.
“Let’s get it out!” Artie and Danny said. They hurried to the house and drew up plans. “We can’t touch the possum,” Artie said. “It might hurt us. And it’s so big that we can’t lift it easily.”
Artie showed Jakey their plan. “We’ll build something over the window well,” said Artie.
“There will be a board to hold the possum. We need long sticks, ropes and wheels to lift it.” added Danny. He kept drawing the plan.
Jakey looked at the plan. “But how will you get the possum to stay on that board?” he asked. Artie and Danny looked at each other. “We’ll need bait,” Danny said. He got an old sandwich from his pocket. “This could work as bait.”
Jakey looked at Danny’s sandwich. It looked bad. The possum would get sick if it ate it.
Then Jakey walked around the garden until he found a long wooden board. Artie and Danny were so busy with their plans that they didn’t even notice that. Jakey carried the board to the well. He lowered it into the window well carefully. The possum didn’t seem to like sharing the window well with a board. It seemed angry and scared. “Oh, calm down.” Jakey said.

Forest fires were once a natural and helpful part of the forest’s life cycle (循环). Long ago, small fires often happened to clear away dead wood and make space for new life. Americans even used these small fires to create better homes for wildlife. In those days, fires kept the forest healthy and balanced. They stopped the dangerous big fires that we often see in the news today.
During the last century, this natural balance began to change. People started to believe that every fire was an enemy, so they tried to put them all out immediately. This caused our forests to become overgrown with old trees and thick leaves. At the same time, climate change made the land much hotter and drier. Today, when a fire starts, it has so many trees and leaves to burn that the fire becomes unstoppable.
These serious wildfires can destroy every living thing in their path. On hills, the soil becomes weak without tree roots to hold it together. When it rains, the soil rushes into rivers and pollutes the water. Many animals also lose their homes after a big wildfire. Some forests can grow back naturally, but the badly damaged (破坏) places stay empty with no plants. In these places, nature needs a helping hand to start growing again.
Planting trees in a planned way is the best way to bring these damaged areas back to life. Since we cannot replant every acre (英亩), experts choose the best places for trees to grow. These young trees will grow up and drop seeds, helping the forest spread and rebuild itself over time. In this way, we protect the soil and provide animals with a home again. Every tree we plant today is an important step toward a greener future.
23. Why were the small fires helpful to forests in the past?
A. Because they provided farming area for people.
B. Because they stopped big fires from happening.
C. Because they drove away dangerous wild animals.
D. Because they provided Americans with better homes.
24. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. Unstoppable wildfires bring terrible harm to nature.
B. Too many old trees and thick leaves are bad for forests.
C. People work to stop climate change and protect forests.
D. Fire control and climate change lead to bigger forest fires.
25. What are the benefits of planting trees to the forests according to the passage?
① Forests go back little by little. ② It gives animals homes.
③ It stops soil from being washed away. ④ It helps the forests look more beautiful.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ①③④
26. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. More Trees, a Greener Future B. A Cry for Help from Nature
C. Forest fires: Helpful or Harmful? D. A Warning from our Burning Forests
【答案】23. B 24. D 25. A 26. C

Artie showed Jakey their plan. “We’ll build something over the window well,” said Artie.

①Li Siguang was born in a poor family in Huanggang County of Hubei Province on October 26, 1889. He studied hard and entered a high school in Wuchang when he was only 13 years old.
②On the boat to Wuchang for further learning, he noticed that the huge waves created by foreign ships overturned Chinese wooden boats on the Yangtze River. Li was quite angry and decided to build large ships for China and lift the country up. Later, he was sent to study shipbuilding in Japan. However, because the steel that was needed to build ships came from mines (矿), Li travelled halfway across the world and studied mining in the UK. Two years later, he changed his major to studying geology (地质学), believing that finding mines and oil required a deep understanding of the Earth’s structure. In the 1920s, Li worked as a professor at the Geology Department of Peking University and got his doctor’s degree in Science at the University of Birmingham as well.

After years of research, Li believed that oil fields could be discovered in the ocean and on land. Thanks to his research, big oil fields like Daqing, Dagang and Shengli oil fields were discovered in China.

He loved his motherland deeply and kept working hard for it from his youth. His great work helped our country develop. He is a great scientist and an excellent role model for us Chinese.
