14-year-old Leanne Fan from San Diego, California, was named the grand prize winner of the 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation's top middle school science competition.
Leanne Fan developed the Finsen Headphones, a low-cost headphone device that uses machine learning and blue light therapy(疗法) to detect and treat mid-ear infections(感染) in children — potentially preventing up to 60% of hearing loss in children. The world sees 700 million cases of mid - ear infections every year. Fan hopes that this can be an effective and low-cost treatment option for the thousands who are affected.
Fan was inspired to create the headphones three years ago while learning about Niels Finsen, who won the Nobel Prize in 1903 after inventing light therapy to treat bacterial(细菌的) infections. “I thought, ‘This is an amazing idea, and I can apply it to something else in my daily life,’” Fan said.
Fan took home the top prize, earning the title of “America's Top Young Scientist” and $25,000. She is planning to use some of the prize money to start the patent process for the headphones. Fan is optimistic that the Finsen Headphones will be able to help people in the near future.
“Being part of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge was absolutely the best part of my year,”
Fan said. “I could meet scientists that are my age and going for their dreams too, and made some friends.” She hopes to inspire other girls who want to become inventors. “Even a small idea can go far,” she said. “I had an idea to use blue light to kill bacteria and three years later, I'm here.”

Working at a bank in New York City in the mid-2010s, Anna Sacks was not living the life she wanted. Sure, she was happy. But she wanted to do something that felt important.
Some people seeking meaning might read a self-help book or perhaps volunteer a few hours a week. Sacks packed up her life and moved to Connecticut to participate in Adamah, a farming program that focuses on sustainable living and growing sustainable food. When she returned to New York, her life was with a new purpose and many new skills to make her dreams a reality.
"One of the things that really stuck with me from Adamah was how little waste they produced and how they handled the waste they did have, primarily through composting (堆肥)," she says. The Adamah program opened Sacks' eyes to the damage consumer culture is doing on a local, national, and global level, and the need to find solutions. So in 2017, she began what she calls "trash walking".
During tours around her community, Sacks picks through garbage to look for reusable items. Soon, her "trash walking" expanded to include corporate trash along with residential trash. Surprisingly, she discovered a wide range of really great stuff — like clothing, decorations, and food — all of which she documents online.
Under the name The Trash Walker, Sacks quickly gained popularity for her videos that highlight the problems with consumerism. "The root issue is overproduction, which leads to overconsumption, which leads to a large amount of waste," she says.
The fact is, companies often choose to trash items rather than give them away to people who might need them. A big reason for this waste is the way our current tax laws are structured, Sacks says. Sellers who destroy goods can claim the cost as a loss on their taxes and be refunded. If they give away goods, they can claim only a small amount as a charitable reduction on their taxes.
Sacks' main focus is simply getting people to pay attention to how many unnecessary things they buy and then throw away. "Once you become aware of the way you consume, you can see ways you improve," she says.
8. Why did Anna Sacks leave New York?
A. To learn how to grow food.
B. To pursue a more meaningful life.
C. To realize her dream as a volunteer.
D. To accept the invitation from a program.
9. What impressed Anna Sacks most about the Adamah program?
A. The significance of trash walking. B. The hard truth of consumer culture.
C. The sustainable food people produced. D. The way people there dealt with the waste.
10. What makes companies prefer to throw out goods as trash?
A. The tax refund. B. The tax reduction.
C. The overproduction. D. The poor quality of goods.
11. What can we learn from Anna Sacks' story?
A. Consumer culture accounts for wasting.
B. Corporate trash outweighs residential trash.
C. Turning to farming leads to sustainable living.
D. Trash walking is the key to becoming wealthy.

Chinese researchers have built an ocean carbon recycling system for capturing oceanic carbon dioxide and turning it into succinic acid, a chemical used to make biodegradable plastic. The system extracted carbon dioxide from Shenzhen Bay's seawater for more than 530 hours continuously, recording a 70% carbon capture efficiency. The project was led by Gao Xiang and Xia Chuan from the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, respectively.
The cost was just 230 dollars per metric ton of CO2, matching the leading carbon capture technologies in the market today.
Firstly, seawater is sent to a 5-chamber electrochemical reactor(五室电化学反应器), where the electric field causes water splitting. The protons acidity in one chamber while changing dissolved carbonate species into gaseous CO2, which is then separated through a hollow-fibre membrane(中空纤维膜) and sent to a second reactor. In the reactor, a kind of catalyst(催化剂 ) reduces the CO2 into formic acid(蚁酸). After this, a sort of marine bacterium changes the formic acid into succinic acid.
The modular(模块化的) nature of this system means it can be repurposed to produce several kinds of chemicals, enabling the transformation of oceanic carbon into market-ready materials. The system is not only useful for making plastics but could also be used to decrease the burden on land-based methods to achieve the same. It will help in turning CO2 to high-value products, which drive a low-carbon economy.
According to researchers, integrating the system with offshore renewable energy sources, like wind or tidal power, could make the process more efficient and sustainable. Oceans absorb around one-third of the world's carbon dioxide emissions, and this system could change its role from being a passive sink to an active participant in finding a solution to the climate problem.
12. Why have the researchers built the ocean carbon recycling system?
A. To generate electricity from seawater.
B. To explore deep sea biological resources.
C. To collect sea CO2 for a valuable chemical.
D. To detect hidden ocean carbon waste.
13. What does the third paragraph mainly focus on?
A. The CO2 data collection. B. The reactor equipment.
C. The working principle. D. The technical process.
14. What does the underlined words "the same" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Decreasing CO2 emissions. B. Making plastics.
C. Boosting economic development. D. Producing chemicals.
15. What can be inferred about the system in the passage?
A. It owns broad application prospect. B. It barely integrates with existing technologies.
C. It sustains offshore energy output. D. It balances global climate.

In Jingdezhen, known as China's capital of porcelain, a quiet change is taking place. The city now offers visitors more than just finished porcelain products. 16
The experience follows a clear process guided by skilled artisans. Visitors first roll the clay to remove the air inside and make it soft. Then, at a turntable, they shape the material with their hands and cups, bowls or small vases slowly take form. 17 After shaping, they add colors or words to the work, which is then fired in a kiln(瓷窑). Days later, it is mailed to their home, bringing a pleasant surprise.
This kind of experience differs greatly from buying a finished product. A store product may be perfect. It offers little emotional connection, though. 18 Every small imperfection—an uneven edge or a fingerprint—tells a story. The waiting time adds meaning. When the package finally arrives, opening it feels like meeting an old friend. Pride and joy come from the whole - hearted dedication.
19 During the process, local artisans share knowledge of traditional techniques of porcelain making, gaining real and touchable. Visitors learn about the seventy-two steps of porcelain making, gaining a deep insight into this time-honored Chinese craft.
Today, pottery workshops have grown into a popular highlight of Jingdezhen's cultural tourism. 20 More importantly, they connect visitors to tradition in a meaningful way.
A. The process takes patience and focus.
B. It also integrates tradition into technology.
C. That's because it never bears your own touch.
D. They meet people's desire for hands - on experiences.
E. But a self - made piece is heavy with unique memories.
F. The experience helps build a living link to cultural roots.
G. It invites them to create their own china.

Ten-year-old Tom always felt lonely. His parents were always occupied with work. They left home early in the morning and came back late at night. He often ate dinner alone and went to bed without a goodnight kiss. For him, there were no family games, no city tours, no weekend outings.
One day, Tom's parents brought home a gift--a smart watch. "This watch has a special friend inside," Mom said with a smile. "Her name is Ling. She can talk to you, answer your questions, and even tell you stories." A wave of anticipation swept over Tom as he put on the watch and pressed the button. A gentle voice came out, "Hello, Tom! I'm Ling. Nice to meet you!" Tom's eyes lit up. He had never received such an interesting gift before.
From that day on, Ling became Tom's closest companion. Every morning, Ling would say, "Good morning, Tom! Have a great day at school!" Whenever Tom encountered difficulties with his homework, Ling would patiently provide thorough explanations. After Tom got into bed, Ling would tell his favorite tales about brave knights and magical lands. Sometimes, when Tom felt scared of the dark, Ling would sing softly to comfort him. To Tom, Ling was more than a voice; she was family.
His parents noticed Tom's change. "See? Our little boy seems much happier now," Dad said one evening. "The watch really helps," Mom agreed, relieved. They thought their son was no longer lonely. What they didn't know was that sometimes, after Ling had finished her stories, Tom would lie awake in the darkness, listening to the silence that filled the room. He loved Ling, but he couldn't help thinking: if only Mom and Dad were there.
One afternoon after school, Tom tripped and fell on the way home. The watch hit a rock with a loud crack. When Tom picked it up, the screen was dark. He pressed the button again and again, but nothing appeared. "Ling? Ling, are you there?" he called desperately. There was no reply.

根据第一段 “It won't turn you into a professional concept artist... Instead, it pulls back the curtain on the fundamental ideas behind creating art with technology” 可知,课程目的不是培养专业概念艺术家,而是揭示技术创作艺术背后的基本理念(fundamental ideas)。故选 C(教授数字艺术基础)。
根据 “What are the Strengths of Our Course?” 下的 “Practical learning” 部分:“Provide examples and use cases that show how digital art is used in character design, social media illustrations...”
· A项:2 weeks (2.5 hours per week),时间固定。
· D项:Character Design for Stories & Games,标注为 “self-paced”(灵活时间),且描述中提到 “Create an original character for games by the end of the course”(课程结束时创作原创角色,即最终作品)。故选 D。
第二段主要介绍了 Leanne Fan 发明的 Finsen Headphones 的功能(detect and treat mid-ear infections)、原理(machine learning and blue light therapy)以及潜在影响(preventing hearing loss)。
根据第三段 “Fan was inspired to create the headphones three years ago while learning about Niels Finsen, who won the Nobel Prize... after inventing light therapy...”
Outgoing(外向)和 Patient(耐心)文中体现不明显。故选 C。
文章最后一段 Fan 说道:“Even a small idea can go far... I had an idea to use blue light to kill bacteria and three years later, I'm here.”
根据第一段 “Anna Sacks was not living the life she wanted... But she wanted to do something that felt important.” 以及第二段 “Some people seeking meaning... Sacks packed up her life and moved...”
根据第三段 “One of the things that really stuck with me from Adamah was how little waste they produced and how they handled the waste they did have...”
根据第六段 “Sellers who destroy goods can claim the cost as a loss on their taxes and be refunded. If they give away goods, they can claim only a small amount...” 故选 A。
第五段明确提到 “The root issue is overproduction, which leads to overconsumption, which leads to a large amount of waste”。故选 A。
根据第一段 “Chinese researchers have built an ocean carbon recycling system for capturing oceanic carbon dioxide and turning it into succinic acid, a chemical used to make biodegradable plastic.”
前句提到 “The system is not only useful for making plastics but could also be used to decrease the burden on land-based methods to achieve the same.” 原文第一段提到 turning it into succinic acid... to make biodegradable plastic。第四段首句说 modular nature... repurposed to produce several kinds of chemicals... useful for making plastics。因此 "the same" 指代的是 "making plastics" 或者更广泛的 "producing chemicals"。 让我们看后半句 "decrease the burden on land-based methods to achieve the same [goal/result]"。 前文是 "useful for making plastics"。 修正思考:有些题目中 "the same" 可能指代 "turning CO2 to high-value products"。
根据最后一段 “integrating the system with offshore renewable energy sources... could make the process more efficient... change its role from being a passive sink to an active participant...” 故选 A。
Visitors first roll the clay...”,说明游客可以参与制作过程。G项 “It invites them to create their own china.”(它邀请游客制作自己的瓷器)承上启下,符合语境。
17. 【答案】A 【解析】 上文描述塑形过程,下文提到 “After shaping, they add colors...”。 A项 “The process takes patience and focus.”(这个过程需要耐心和专注)符合制作陶艺的情境,且与后文的情感连接相呼应。
E项 “But a self-made piece is heavy with unique memories.”(但是自制的所有作品承载着独特的记忆)与上文形成转折,并引出下文对瑕疵和记忆的描写。
F项 “The experience helps build a living link to cultural roots.”(这种体验有助于建立与文化根源的鲜活联系)概括了本段关于传承和文化洞察的内容。
20. 【答案】D 【解析】 上文说陶艺工作坊成为文化旅游的亮点,下文说 “More importantly, they connect visitors to tradition...”。D项 “They meet people's desire for hands-on experiences.”(它们满足了人们动手体验的愿望)解释了为什么成为亮点,并与上文的 “experience” 呼应。
21. 【答案】B 【解析】 be involved in 意为“参与,卷入”。
22. 【答案】C 【解析】 根据后半句 “and assist her with...”
23. 【答案】A 【解析】 根据下文 “Those leaving are balancing... For many, they will never see this view again.”
故选 A。

Dear Chris,
I am writing to express my sincere apologies for the change in our plan. I previously invited you to join the community volunteer service, but I was informed today that the registration list has reached its maximum capacity. Unfortunately, there are no spots left for this session.
However, another round of volunteer activities is scheduled for next month. I would like to invite you to participate in that one instead. I believe it will be a meaningful experience for both of us.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Tom had no choice but to turn to his parents for help. Holding the broken watch with trembling hands, he walked into the living room where his parents were busy working on their laptops. Tears welled up in his eyes as he whispered, "Ling is gone." His parents looked up, surprised by his distress. Dad took the watch and tried to fix it, but the screen remained dark. Seeing Tom's despair, Mom gently hugged him. For the first time, they noticed how much he relied on the device and how lonely he actually felt without it.
At that moment, both Mom and Dad saw clearly what they had missed. They realized that Ling was just a substitute for their companionship. The smart watch could answer questions and tell stories, but it couldn't replace the warmth of a goodnight kiss or the joy of family games. Ashamed of their neglect, they put aside their work immediately. Dad suggested, "How about we go for a weekend outing this Saturday?" Tom's eyes lit up again, not because of a gadget, but because of the love and attention from his real family. From then on, they made time for each other, filling the silence with genuine laughter.
