Hi there! My name is Seabiscuit. I want to tell you my story.
At first, my life was not very exciting. People thought I was lazy. They didn’t think I could be a champion racehorse. I usually lost my races. I was often tired and hungry. I felt like nobody wanted me.
But my life changed completely when I met three special men. First, there was Mr Charles Howard. He was a kind and rich man. He decided to buy me. Then, there was Tom Smith. He was my trainer. He was very quiet, but he understood horses perfectly. He knew I had a strong spirit inside. Finally, there was Red Pollard. He became my jockey (骑师) and my best friend. Red was also having a hard time in his life. We understood each other perfectly.
Together, we became a team. Tom trained me with patience and kindness. Red talked to me and encouraged me. He never forced me to run. We built trust. For the first time, I felt that someone believed in me. I wanted to run for them. I wanted to win.
And we started winning! I surprised everyone. I won race after race. People started to cheer for me. I was no longer the lazy horse. I became a symbol of hope. This was during the Great Depression (大萧条), a time when many people were sad. They saw my story and felt that they could solve their problems, too.
Later, Red and I both got hurt. It was a difficult time. But we helped each other get better. Our friendship became even stronger. In my final important race, Red rode me again. We won together, one more time.
If you want to know more about me, you can watch the film Seabiscuit. It is well worth watching, especially for junior high three students.

During the holiday, I went with my parents to visit my grandparents in the countryside. When Grandma said she had been very busy with farm work, I immediately decided to stay overnight at her house.
The thought of planting seeds and watering the fields, just like Li Ziqi who makes beautiful videos about country life, made me really excited. That night, I could hardly fall asleep.
“Sweetie, time to get up.” Grandma’s soft voice woke me up. I looked at the clock. It was only 5:30 in the morning.
I asked, “Grandma, why do we have to get up so early?”
“Because the hens just laid their eggs. Now is the best time to collect them,” she explained.
The morning air was cool and fresh. But as we walked towards the chicken house, a strong, unpleasant smell came out. I held my breath and followed Grandma closely. She opened a small window and reminded me, “You have to be quick but gentle.”
I saw a hen guarding two large eggs. She looked a bit scary. I took a deep breath and slowly reached out my hand. Suddenly, the hen stood up! I let out a small cry but quickly picked up the eggs before she could peck(啄)me.
The eggs felt warm in my hands. They were so different from the cold ones we usually take out of the fridge.
Later, we watered the vegetables in the fields, picked two pumpkins, and collected a small basket of chilies. By the time Grandma called me for dinner, I was already sound asleep on the sofa.
When I finally sat down to enjoy the simple meal, I realized for the first time that every single dish was the fruit of hard work. That day, I had not only helped on the farm but also learned to respect the labour that feeds us.

When we think about what makes humans special, a good sense of humour is often high on the list. Laughter and playful joking seem like qualities only we have. However, recent research suggests that animals, especially great apes, may also have behaviours that are meant to be humorous.
A study led by Professor Isabelle Laumer at the Max Planck Institute shows interesting views. “We found young apes moving forward to hit adults, then waiting for a response,” Laumer explains. “This isn’t just play. It meets all the rules of playing tricks on others purposefully.” Over 75 hours of video recordings showed that this behaviour resembles how human children joke: repetitive, surprising, and trying to get responses. The researchers noted that the apes even stopped to watch for the adults’ response, much like a child waiting to see if their joke worked.
But humour in animals may not be only in apes. Dog owners often notice their pets making breathy sounds during play, which some scientists consider to be laughter. In a 2025 study, researchers found that playing these sounds to dogs reduced their stress levels. Similarly, dolphins make joyful sounds during play-fighting, elephants shout excitedly when playing, and some parrots make fun of other animals. They do these things just for fun.
Why might animals show humour? In humans, laughter strengthens (加强) social connections and reduces stress. Scientists find that playful joking in apes or “laughter” in dogs could help in a similar way—starting friendly communication and strengthening relationships. Some researchers believe these behaviours may have evolved (进化) to help animals manage difficult social ranks or reduce fights. However, Laumer says that more research is needed to confirm this finding, as watching humour in animals remains challenging.
21. How does the writer introduce the topic?
A. By giving an example. B. By listing human qualities.
C. By questioning a common belief. D. By asking a question.
22. What did Laumer’s study find about young apes?
A. They enjoy playing jokes on others. B. They copy humans’ joking behaviour.
C. They use tools to get adults’ attention. D. They laugh loudly during fighting.
23. What role does Paragraph 3 play in the text?
A. It introduces a new topic about animal sounds.
B. It compares animal humour with human humour.
C. It explains why animals need to reduce stress.
D. It supports the idea that humour is common in animals.
24. Why might animals show humour?
A. To kill time. B. To strengthen relationships.
C. To win in fights. D. To get much more pleasure.
25. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Animals have a sense of humour B. Animals learn humour from humans
C. Animals play games too D. Animals are like humans
