My mom works hard. She takes care of me and my young sister. Every day when she gets home from work, she makes dinner for us.
One day, I decided to help my mom. She’s always taking care of us, so I thought, “It’s about time I do something for her too. I’m nine years old. “ I decided to cook dinner for her. I don’t know a lot about cooking. But it doesn’t look that difficult. Noodles are easy to cook. All you do is to boil water, add the noodles and continue boiling. This was how I saw my mom doing it. I was really excited. “Today, when Mom comes home, dinner will be cooked. We will sit down and eat some delicious noodles” I said to myself. After school I ran home quickly, and started to cook. I boiled the water on the stove (炉子) and then added the noodles. I was very careful. I cooked the noodles a long time.
It can’t hurt, right? Just before Mom got home, I turned off the stove. The noodles were not like the kind my mom usually makes. They were very mushy. They were more like a soup.
Mom was surprised when she came home. She put the noodles in bowls and sat with me and ate her noodles. “Mum! These are the best noodles in the world, my son. “ she said. I knew the noodles were terrible. But that’s not important. Mom knew that I was trying help out.

So, it’s exam time again. Have you done the necessary work to get good marks? Sleeping with the textbook under the pillow (枕头) doesn’t work. To learn something well, practice little by little over time. Don’t try to learn everything at once. A scientist, Tom Stafford, explains it this way: if you study for one hour a day over five days, you will remember more than if you study for five hours in just one day.
△ Get pens and paper and start working! If you test yourself earlier, you can remember the knowledge better and longer. John Dunlosky, a professor in the US, suggests that “Review the notes and marks you’ve made in your textbook, summarize (总结) the key ideas, and then test yourself on them.
Good revision (复习) should give you confidence, but if you are still worried, there are some special customs for you to relax. In Japan it seems to be a tradition for students to eat Katsudon (炸猪排饭) before a test. This is a bowl of rice with egg and pork pieces. The name of the dish makes people think of the word “Katsu”, meaning “winning”. For some students in South Korea, the key to success is not washing their hair before an exam, because they believe they could wash all the knowledge out of their heads. And in different parts of the world, there are always those who believe in their “lucky underwear”.
The most important thing is that you need to study, eat a good meal, sleep well on the eve of the test, and believe that your efforts will pay off.
Good luck in your exam!
51. What is Tom Stafford’s advice on remembering learned things??
A. Study for long hours in one day.
B. Divide study time into several days.
C. Put textbooks under the pillow to sleep.
52. Which sentence can be best put in △ in paragraph 2?
A. Don’t read your textbooks early.
B. Don’t depend on memory alone.
C. Don’t test yourselves very often.
53. What is Professor John Dunlosky’s study suggestion?
A. To test yourself using the notes you’ve taken.
B. To read the textbook from the beginning to the end.
C. To study in a group and test each other.
54. Which of the following is TRUE according to paragraph 3?
A. “Katsudon” sounds like the word for “winning” in Japanese.
B. South Korean students like washing hair before an exam.
C. Special underwear is worn for luck around the world.
55. What does the writer advise (建议) students to do before tests?
