What would you do if your best friend and you had different ideas? At first, I didn’t know how to do it when I found that my best friend Karina disagreed with me on some things.
When we first met in a summer camp, we got along so well.
But then something happened at a picnic. “Did you hear about the shopping center news?” asked one of our friends Levar. “They want to cut down lots of trees to make room for a shopping center.”
“That’s terrible! We have to stop that,” I said.
“I disagree,” said Karina. “The shopping center would give new jobs to people in need.”
“But animals would lose their homes!” I said. “I want people to have jobs, but it doesn’t mean cutting down trees.”
I wished Karina could agree with me about saving the trees, but she had her reasons for believing what she said. I was so angry that I didn’t talk to her for days.
Later, my mother knew it and said to me, “No two people are the same. You should respect each other. And no matter what happens, the difference doesn’t mean losing a good friend.”

Can plants talk? Modern research has found something amazing: they communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals (化学物质) to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked (侵害) by insects. The plant gives out (释放) chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning (警告) system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds; but plants are making them.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can connect nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide web is very important in plant communication. Different plants are connected to each other through a wood wide web. It’s like the Internet. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, some plants may use it to spread (传播) chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a“firewall”to help stop these attacks in the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more about the secret ways plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about their communication so that we are able to “talk” with them ourselves.
27. What do plants use to “talk” with each other?
A. Words. B. Chemicals. C. Light. D. Water.
28. What is the “wood wide web” in the text?
A. A kind of insect. B. A kind of forest.
C. A chemical used by plants. D. A system of communication among plants.
29. What is the writer’s purpose (目的) of writing the last paragraph?
A. To praise scientists for their great work. B. To ask people to plant more plants.
C. To give people hope for further studies. D. To encourage people to talk to plants.
30. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. How Plants Give Warnings. B. The Secret Language of Plants.
C. Why Scientists Do Research about Plants. D. The Study about the Plant Warning System.
