As the temperature rises, we can see green grass poking through the soil and buds appearing on tree branches. The world wakes up from its cold sleep, and everything starts to become lively. It brings people hope and makes us look forward to the beautiful days ahead.
For us students, Start of Spring is more than a season change. It is a perfect time to go outside with friends. We can have a picnic in the park, fly kites in the wind, or even plant some small seeds in pots. Watching the seeds grow little by little is not only fun but also teaches us about the magic of nature. These activities let us enjoy the fresh air and relax after busy school days.
In short, Start of Spring is a special festival full of energy. It reminds us to slow down and notice the beauty around us. By understanding this solar term, we can get closer to traditional Chinese culture and love our natural world more.

You may hear “volunteers” many times. You may also see them on the road, in a community centre, or at the hospital. Then what is a volunteer? Volunteers are people who do a job without being paid. They are the people who are looking for the satisfaction (满足感) of helping others.
Volunteers do many different kinds of jobs. Some volunteers read books onto tapes (磁带) so that people with eye problems can hear. Some volunteers send meals to the old or sick people. Some volunteers help visitors when they don’t know the way or when they have some other problems.
Volunteers help when a natural disaster (自然灾害) hits a community. Volunteers help put out bush fires (林区大火). They may help people leave the areas quickly when there is an earthquake, a tsunami (海啸)or a flood. They may also help people rebuild their homes after the disasters. A community may not recover without the help of volunteers.
Some communities need volunteers more than others. If the communities don’t have much money they will need a lot of help from volunteers. For example, communities with lots of old people may need more help from volunteers than communities with more young people. Volunteers can help the old do the cleaning, do the shopping or just talk with them. Without volunteers some communities even couldn’t work.

Do you want to stay away from colds? Put on a happy face.
Compared to unhappy people those who are happy are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. “It’s possible that being happy helps the body fight illnesses,” said the researchers from New York University.
“It seems that positive feelings may reduce the danger of illness,” said the study’s leader and researcher Sheldon Cohen.
In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were happy and lively caught coughs and colds less often. People who showed feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill.
In this new study, Cohen’s team interviewed 193 people every day for two weeks. During the interviews, the people told researchers about the happy or sad feelings they had that day.
After two weeks, doctors let these people come into contact with cold viruses, and they had to stay alone in a room for seven days.
The result showed that everyone in the study was equally(同等地)likely to get ill. But for people who said they felt happy during the research time, their illness was less serious and lasted for a shorter time.
Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may make a kind of thing in the body that helps fight illness. So if you are worried about your health, look on the bright side more often.

Students nowadays have much pressure and hardly have time for exercise. But it’s very important to keep good physical and mental health (身心健康).
First of all, we should make good use of spare time. Instead of just sitting and resting between classes, we can do some easy exercise like taking a quick walk. For example, we can go up and down the stairs several times during breaks.
Second, we can learn some relaxation skills. Taking a deep breath is a good one and we can do it anywhere. Close our eyes, breathe in slowly through the nose, hold for a short while, and then breathe out slowly through the mouth. This can help us feel less stressed and calm our minds.
Also, we need to have a healthy diet. Even if we are very busy, we should choose healthy foods like fruits, vegetables or low-fat foods. Try not to eat too much junk food or sweet drinks.
Besides, we must get a regular sleep, going to bed and getting up at the same time every day. A good sleep at night helps our bodies get better and makes our minds clearer.
Finally, we can develop some hobbies. It could be reading, drawing or listening to music in our free time on weekends. Hobbies can deal with stress and make our minds relax and feel fresh. If we do these things in our daily lives, we can be healthy in both body and mind even though we have a lot of pressure.
41. A lot of students just choose to ________ and ________ between classes.

Helping Builds a Better World
Helping others makes the world warmer and more beautiful.
Last week, my classmate Li Hua had great trouble with math. He looked very worried. I decided to help him solve the problems. I explained the difficult points patiently after school every day. Finally, he understood them and smiled happily. I felt very happy and proud too.
From this experience, I realize that giving help is better than receiving. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Let’s help others and build a better world together.
