My PhD adviser called me into his office, saying I needn't bring my notebook. After 15 minutes of listing my positive things, he looked me in the eye and said, “You are fired from the lab.”
I had moved to Israel from my native India the year before, excited to experience a new culture and study for a PhD. At first things went well in my new lab. Then, 3 months before I was fired, I ran into some problems. I made a few mistakes in the lab that slowed my research, but I wasn't aware that my adviser noticed them, and he never spoke to me about any concerns. I'm still not sure why he fired me, but I guess it was because of those mistakes. He wasn't confident that I could complete my research in time as we'd planned.
The first few days after I was fired were especially difficult. I spent hours staring at my computer screen, unable to get anything done. One day all I could do was sit on a beach, crying. I tried to change his mind with promising results, but he stuck to his decision. I could not break the news to my family in India, as the fear of disappointing them overwhelmed (压垮) me. I soon got into a state of sadness and anxiety. Meanwhile, the date for me to leave the country was drawing near, as my visa required me to be registered as a student. I was lonely and without hope.
Around that time, I watched Dasvidaniya, a Bollywood movie that's about a man who has 3 months to live. One line from the movie stuck out to me: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” What kind of lemonade could I make out of my present situation? My desire to complete a PhD was never in doubt. After much reflection, I told myself that one failed attempt was not the end of the world, and that I needed to give it another try. With renewed confidence, I emailed expected advisers and applied to other programs. Within 2 months, I landed an offer from a PhD program in Italy. I accepted it and relocated to Europe, happy that my goal of completing a PhD was alive once again.
I'm thankful that I didn't give up on my dream and that I found another professor willing to take me on.

7.What lesson can we learn from the story?

While traditional types of books, such as non-fiction, are becoming less popular, fantasy stories are catching on, as shown by the International Book Markets 2025 report. But what makes fantasy so hard to resist?
Fantasy is true to the human mind, especially to its wild side that we all feel but cannot easily express in daily life. Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor noted that everyone lives within limits that both control and comfort us in “the buffered self”, which makes us see the world as lacking magic and mystery. Therefore, we don’t believe in ghosts or any supernatural forces. This idea protects us from confusion and fear, yet it also holds back the wildest parts of our imagination, making us hope that magic and wonder could someday return to our lives.
Besides, UK author Adam Roberts pointed out that fantasy serves as a controlled and safe return to the ideas we have ignored. It allows us to experience a gentle, limited version of the legendary past. With its kings and adventures, fantasy brings back what we miss in our modern and orderly world of work and routine, but only in a controlled way. We enjoy imagining ourselves as strong heroes or special “chosen ones” when real life makes us feel small. But we do not want to live in a world ruled by powerful kings and violent warriors.
Moreover, fantasy is something not just wanted but needed, as it encourages our imagination, noted The Guardian. A purely scientific world feels cold and empty, unable to feed our spirits. As Philip Pullman writes in The Rose Field, Lyra considers that human beings need certain things we cannot prove, yet we would struggle to live without them, especially our imagination. As she says, “Maybe the imagination is a sort of wind that blows through all the worlds... It shows us true things.”
In a world where logic and routine take over, fantasy is a reminder of a hidden longing for wonder.
8.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By listing different types of books. B. By describing a shared human need.
C. By quoting a well-known philosopher.D. By highlighting a recent market trend.
9..According to Charles Taylor, what is the function of “the buffered self”?
A.It inspires us to seek magic in our daily lives. B. It protects us but limits our imagination.C. It creates a world full of mystery and wonder.D. It helps us express our wild side more freely.
10.According to Adam Roberts, what does fantasy help us do?
A.Let us return to forgotten ideas safely. B. Teach us to ignore all our strange ideas.C. Rule the world with kings and warriors. D. Become great heroes in our real daily life.
11.Why does the author mention Lyra’s words in The Rose Field?
A. To present the limits of science. B. To stress the importance of imagination.
C. To suggest that imagination can be proven.
D.To show imagination is less important than science.
D
A recent global study, which surveyed 10,000 young people from 10 countries, showed that nearly 60 percent of them were extremely worried about the future state of the planet. The report also showed that nearly half of the respondents (受访者) said that such distress affected them daily, and threequarters agreed with the statement that “the future is frightening.” This, and many other studies, show clearly that climate change is not just a threat to the environment. It also poses a very real threat to our mental health.
Psychologists have classified these feelings of sadness, distress, and worry about the current climate emergency as ecoanxiety. According to the Climate Psychology Alliance, ecoanxiety is defined as the “intense physical and mental discomfort in response to dangerous changes in the climate system.”
Ecoanxiety doesn't just affect young people. It also affects researchers who work in climate and ecological science, burdened by the reality discovered in their findings, and it affects the poor people across the globe, who hopelessly bear the harmful impacts of climate breakdown.
In recent years, we've seen wildfires tear through Canada and Greece, and summer floods destroy regions in Pakistan that are home to nearly 33 million people. Studies have shown that those impacted by air pollution and rising temperatures are more likely to experience mental distress.
The cause of this mental distress is absolutely external. According to Caroline Hickman, a researcher on ecoanxiety from the University of Bath, anyone experiencing these emotions is displaying entirely natural and rational reactions to the climate crisis. Her suggestion? Take ecoanxiety as a tool for good — as an emotion that can urge people to act in protection of our planet.
This is why, in the future, we will also see more people around the world join the fight for climate justice and apply for jobs that seek sustainable development. Ecoanxiety is not something we will defeat with therapy — we will solve it by taking action.
12.What does the underlined word “distress” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Shock. B.Anxiety. C.Fear. D.Anger.
13.What is ecoanxiety according to the Climate Psychology Alliance?
A.It is a strong reaction to the natural disasters.
B.It is a kind of mental disease for the young people.
C.It is a physical and mental discomfort when we meet difficulties.
D.It is a strong physical and mental discomfort for the dangerous climate changes.
14.What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?
A.The process of ecoanxiety. B.The impact of ecoanxiety.
C.The causes of ecoanxiety. D.The benefits of ecoanxiety.
15.What's the approach to solving ecoanxiety according to Caroline Hickman?
A.Defeat it with a therapy.B.Just wait for a good solution.
C.Join the fight for climate justice.D.Use it to urge people to protect our earth.

When I was eleven years old, I moved to Tampa, Florida. My parents traveled for a living, so Aunt Emily took care of me while they were away. One rainy morning, there was an old lady who was dressed in a bright orange coat carrying a rubbish bag and a stick. “What's that old lady doing?”I asked Emily, pointing out the window to the street in front of the house.
Hearing my question, Emily answered, “She's picking up rubbish around here for fun.”“Oh,” I answered. “Interesting ... Why would someone think picking up rubbish was fun?” For a long time, I often saw that old lady — rain or shine — on my way to school. In the beginning, I thought she was crazy to pick up rubbish. However, I finally smiled and waved at her each time I saw her.
Later, when I moved to college, I saw rubbish in the grass and felt really angry about it. I'd think,“Why isn't anyone picking up rubbish? People are so unconcerned!” But shortly after that, I said to myself, “Why do I think picking up rubbish is someone else's duty?” And I couldn't walk past trash without feeling guilty (内疚的).
So while walking in the college, I began picking up rubbish and made sure the campus was in better shape than I previously found it. My behavior influenced some students. They started to help out.
Like me, they also picked up rubbish whenever they noticed it. And our college became more beautiful. Seeing it, I began to think, “If I could pick up rubbish outside the college — in other places of the town, it may make a big difference to the town.”
But picking up rubbish in front of many people outside the college needs courage. It could be embarrassing. But it was the right thing to do. I decided to try it.
注意: 1. 续写词数应 150 左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One morning, I went out to pick up rubbish.
Then I decided to encourage more students to do this in the town.

第二节 读后续写(标准满分范文 150词)
One morning, I went out to pick up rubbish. At first, I felt really embarrassed when passers-by stared at me. Some people even whispered as they walked past. I wanted to give up several times. But the image of the old lady in the orange coat always appeared in my mind. She never cared about others’ opinions and stuck to doing the right thing. Encouraged by her spirit, I kept bending down to collect litter patiently. Gradually, I became calm and proud to protect the environment.
Then I decided to encourage more students to do this in the town. I posted my experience and photos on our school’s social media platform. To my surprise, many students were inspired and volunteered to join me. We formed a small environmental protection team and took turns cleaning streets on weekends. Slowly, more citizens began to realize the importance of protecting the environment. Small efforts can make a big difference. I finally understood that kindness and persistence can light up the whole world.
