Fengxiang, a county in Shaanxi Province, is well known for its clay figurines (泥塑). The craft of making clay figurines dates back more than 3,000 years. Records show the craft appeared during the Western Zhou Dynasty and developed quickly during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The brightly colored figurines show the county’s rich history and culture. Ancient people enjoyed buying clay figurines, especially during festivals or holidays, believing the figurines would bring good luck and happiness to their families.
People make clay figurines in two ways. The first one is the mold-making method. The artist creates the figurines from clay set in molds. The second one is the hand-making method. The artist shapes clay into different animals with hands only.
Past generations (一代人) of craftsmen did their best to pass down the craft to younger generations. However, because of the rapid technological development, clay figurines have been produced in a great number of molds. That has affected the development of the handmade things.
In 2006, the art form was added to the list of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (非物质文化遗产). In recent years, the government of Fengxiang County has been trying to increase the production of clay figurines. With all these efforts, the old art form becomes popular again. Evans Wadongo was from a village in Africa. He had to do homework by the light of a kerosene lamp (煤油灯). Evans’ eyes hurt and this made studying difficult. It was common in his village. Many children left school for this reason, so they remained poor for the rest of their lives.
Although studying was difficult, Evans was an excellent student and went to a university. He continued to worry about the kerosene lamp. By this time, he realized it was not just bad for schoolchildren but for the whole family. First, it can cause illnesses such as coughs. Also, the light can hurt people’s eyes. Besides, it can lead to fires. Lastly, kerosene is expensive, so families have less money for food. It was difficult to come up with a different kind of lamp that was cheap and good for the environment. Yet Evans did not give up.
One day, he had an idea. He could use a small solar (太阳能的) light. Sunlight is free and solar power is good for the environment. Evans built his first solar lamp, and it worked. He began to build more lamps and sent them to local families. An organization heard about this and offered money to him to build more solar lamps.
Each lamp only cost $20. However, this was a lot of money to many villagers, who only made around $34 a week, so Evans made sure he kept the cost down. First, Evans used recycled materials. Next, volunteers built the lamps. Finally, people from many countries gave away money to his team, so the lamps were usually free.

The Yuyuan Garden is located in the northeastern part of Shanghai’s old city, next to the city’s famous place—City God Temple, and is the only remaining garden from the Ming Dynasty. For hundreds of years, it has served as the center for the Shanghai lantern show.
Lantern shows date back to the Han Dynasty. Later after the Ming Dynasty, such events became a cultural celebration in Shanghai. Traditionally, lantern shows started on the 13th day of the first lunar month of the year, and then ended on the 18th day of the first lunar month. During the 2021 Shanghai Fashion Week, a young, slim and confident model with an iron leg drew everyone’s attention. Her name was Niu Yu. She lost her right leg in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. She was only 11 years old then.
Niu Yu used to be in the school sports team. She loved running. But the disaster broke her dream. She had to live with an artificial leg. It wasn’t comfortable, and her leg often bled. People’s curious eyes made her even more uncomfortable. She always tried to hide her leg under jeans or dresses.
With the support (支持) of her family and friends, Niu Yu slowly came out from the shadows. In 2018, right before her 21st birthday, she decided not to hide her leg any longer. To her surprise, she received lots of encouraging words. She also finished a half marathon in about 4 hours. She completed the hard 10-year journey of finding herself again.
Now Niu Yu puts her experiences on social media (媒体). She listens to disaster survivors and encourages them to look forward. In 2023, she carried the torch (火炬) at the FISU World University Games. “It is a great honour for me,” she said. “But it is also a good chance to show people the power of being brave.”
