A hurricane (飓风) is a big storm with strong fast wind and heavy rain. It begins on the sea and can come onto the land. The strong wind is dangerous to us and can damage our houses. We are unable to prevent it, but we can get out of its way.

The brush pen, one of the “Four Treasures of the Study”, was invented thousands of years ago. However, the oldest pen was just a stick or a piece of bamboo. It is said that Meng Tian, a general of the Kingdom of Qin, improved the pen. When Meng was leading an army to fight against the Kingdom of Chu, he had to write reports to his king. His pen was too hard and caused him much trouble, so he was thinking of ways to improve it.
One day after hunting, Meng made his way home with some wild rabbits on the horse-back. One rabbit’s tail left a long trail (痕迹) on the ground when it moved. Suddenly a good idea came to his mind when he saw it, “If I tie the rabbit’s hair to a stick, would it be easy to write with?” On arriving home, he tied the rabbit’s hair to a stick and tried writing with it. But the rabbit’s hair was too smooth to write with well. Meng was so disappointed that he threw away his “invention” into a stone hole in the yard.
A few rainy days later, Meng happened to find his “invention” softer in a stone hole. He picked it up with hope. It turned out that the special water had washed the oil off the hair. The brush worked beautifully. Meng succeeded at last.
Thanks to Meng, the brush pen is always playing a key role in Chinese culture.

A. The history of the Four Treasures of the Study. B. How Meng Tian improved the brush pen.
C. Different kinds of ancient writing tools. D. The life story of General Meng Tian.

Money can’t buy you happiness. What if it could? Not by making it or spending it, but by giving it away. Many people never realize that giving is the secret to true happiness.
In an experiment, researchers gave each of the volunteers twenty yuan every week for four weeks and asked twenty-five of the volunteers to spend the money on themselves and write down how they spent the money. But researchers asked the other twenty-five to spend the money on other people.
The results showed two things. First, the 25 volunteers who gave their money to others during the four weeks were more generous (慷慨的) and chose to give more money to others. Second, those same people were much happier than the people who once spent the money on themselves. Giving creates a warm connection between people and makes our society harmonious.
But would you like to do this in your daily life? Can you really make yourself happy by giving? The answer is yes, but remember to start small. You can start by giving one yuan to a homeless person. Little by little, you can try to change your habits so that you can save money to give away. For example, stop buying something that you don’t really need. Then you can save some money and give it to the people in need.
Learning to give away money is all about changing the way you behave. It’s about living with less money and being more generous. Small acts of giving can bring great happiness.
56. How many volunteers took part in the experiment?
A. Twenty. B. Twenty-five. C. Forty. D. Fifty.
57. What does the underlined word “harmonious” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. 和谐的 B. 环保的 C. 热闹的 D. 古老的
58. What does the writer advise us to do to save money for giving?
A. Work harder to make more money. B. Stop buying unnecessary things.
C. Give all our money away. D. Ask others for help.
59. What can we learn according to the passage?
A. We should start with big things to help others. B. Only rich people should give money to others.
C. Small acts of kindness can bring us joy. D. Spending money always makes us sad.
60. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Money buys everything B. Giving brings happiness
C. An interesting science experiment D. Different ways to help homeless people

Today, we have many kinds of technology to protect us from disasters. Natural disasters may bring great harm to our lives, so modern technology plays an important role in dis-aster prevention and rescue. With some prediction systems, we can know where and when some disasters will hit. Then we can have time to prepare and take action early! And some of the technology is just around us, helping people in disasters.
The drone is one of them. We can use it to send food, water, medicine and other important things when a natural disaster happens. Very often the buildings are too dangerous for rescue teams to get in, but they can make the drone fly into the buildings to look for those who are still alive first. It can reach places that are hard for humans to get to.
Social media is also useful when it comes to natural disasters. With its help, people can know about natural disasters earlier. People can mark themselves as out of danger on some social media, so they can let their families and friends know their situations in time after dis-asters. Social media is also a place for the latest news, so people can learn what is going on in disaster areas. Also, many social media allow people to donate money to people in disaster areas. The money will help them get back to their normal lives as soon as possible.
Although the technology can help us when there is a natural disaster, we still need to learn important survival skills. After all, the skills are always the most useful to keep safe.
