Hans is a young German born after 1995, who is a big fan of Chinese culture. He has been learning traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) since 2016. Now he is studying for his master’s degree at Henan University of Chinese Medicine.
As he thought some diseases can’t be treated thoroughly with Western medicine, he decided to research into TCM. Hans came to Central China’s Henan Province in 2015, where a rich TCM culture can be enjoyed because Henan Province is the hometown of Zhang Zhongjing, the medical master of ancient China. After one year of learning the Chinese language, he started to learn Chinese medicine. Hans thought TCM is one of the most well-kept parts of Chinese culture. He hopes to solve problems and understand Chinese culture deeply by learning TCM.
Without a language barrier (障碍), Hans read some of the ancient Chinese medical classics, such as Huangdi Neijing and Yi Jing. He believes different parts of traditional Chinese culture connect with and affect each other.

But now, according to the Yin-Yang theory in TCM, he lives a balanced and peaceful life, practicing good habits such as drinking tea and meditating (冥想), as well as reading ancient books.
Hans also uses what he has learned to help his family. Previously, acupuncture (针灸) tools and Chinese medicine were necessities when he went back to his home in Germany. With acupuncture and Chinese-style massages (按摩), many different physical disorders of his family have been well-treated. Now, he always provides his family members with some advice about staying fit after he checks their skin or tongues online. Over time, his family gradually began to understand his passion for TCM.
He plans to run a traditional Chinese clinic in China or Germany after graduation, which could serve as a bridge between the two countries and publicize (推广) TCM and its culture.
4. What attracted Hans to Henan Province to study TCM?
A. Its rich TCM culture. B. Its unusual language.
C. Its beautiful scenery. D. Its famous university.
5. What makes it possible for Hans to read ancient Chinese medical classics?
A. His family’s support. B. His money situation.

Computer scientist Mary has an idea for a new robot to help her work with children. How should it look? The robot should have arms to be able to lift things. And if it is going to communicate with people, it will also need a face. Scientists believe that giving a robot a face can make it seem more friendly. Humans would also like to pay more attention to robots with faces. But what kind?
For Mary, she wants to make sure that her new robot doesn’t look too much like a human. She wants people to just treat it as a machine-person. If it looks more like a human than a machine, she thinks users might find it a bit creepy and feel afraid. Mary also believes that robot faces don’t need to look a lot like ours. Her research shows that we can enjoy communicating with robots whether or not they look like humans, because our brains are able to look for faces. Just put two circles on top of a robot’s body, and we will see a face.
Dave feels differently. He believes that although at first we might be afraid when seeing a robot with a lifelike face, we may soon get used to it. If robots are going to work closely with humans, they should look as much like us as possible. After all, faces are an important part of the way we communicate.
To make his robots look as much like real people as possible, Dave invented a special skin (皮肤) for their faces. With this skin, robots can show human-like expressions and appear to be angry, sad, happy or surprised. Dave’s robots are also programmed to copy expressions. How? Just imagine his robot is looking at you. The cameras in its eyes send pictures of your face to its central computer!
8. Why do scientists think a robot needs a face?
A. It will become more beautiful. B. It can do better in lifting things.
C. It will pay more attention to children. D. It can better communicate with people.
9. What does the underlined word “creepy” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Uncomfortable to look at. B. Impossible to touch.
C. Boring to talk to. D. Difficult to understand.
10. Which of the following would Dave most probably agree with?
A. People should treat robots as humans.
B. Robots need to express their own feelings.
C. Robots shouldn't look too much like humans.
D. People can easily accept robots with a human face.
11. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the reasons why robots should have faces.
B. To suggest what humans can do with robots with faces.
C. To share ideas on what kind of faces robots should have.

When you finally finish your homework and get to relax, what do you do? Do you lie on your bed and scroll (滚屏) through your phone? Many people find that this kind of entertainment only brings boredom and emptiness (空虚).
Opposite to what many people may think, play isn’t just a waste of time. Having the ability to play and relax meaningfully during your leisure time is important.
“Leisure doesn’t improve quality of life unless one knows how to use it effectively (有效地),” James Wallman, the writer of Time and How to Spend It, told CNBC Make It, explaining that some experiences are “junk experiences” while others are like “superfoods” .
The “superfood” activities put you into a state of “flow”, which is “about being in the present zone [and] really enjoying yourself”, added Wallman. Any pleasurable activity that truly challenges us has the potential (潜力) to lead to the flow-state.
These “superfoods” help you achieve a higher “leisure quotient” (LQ, 玩商). LQ is an index (指数) used to describe one’s ability to relax and play. A high LQ usually means that a person has good control over their life, knows how to develop their potential and keeps a balanced lifestyle that makes them healthier and happier, according to China Daily.
Psychological (心理学的) research shows that people with high LQ scores feel happier and generally avoid depression (抑郁) and other mental illnesses. Meanwhile, Kenichi Ohmae, a Japanese management expert, points out that those who can play will succeed.
Instead of doing passive (被动的) activities like scrolling through short videos, people with high LQ scores actively choose activities that suit their interests and strengths, giving them continuous positive feedback.
According to Wallman, examples of this positive feedback include: a memorable story you can share with others; a new skill or a different world view; more experience with the real world; and improved relationships or a higher social status.
The next time you find yourself bored with nothing to do, try doing some experiences that could benefit you or add to your life. It’s never too late to improve your LQ!
12. According to James Wallman, what are “superfood” activities?
A. Activities that are free and easy to do.
B. Activities that don’t require much effort.
C. Activities that make you feel bored and empty.
D. Activities that are both enjoyable and challenging.
13. What does the LQ index describe?
A. The ability to balance work and life. B. The potential to lead a successful life.
C. The ability to play and relax. D. The ability to manage difficult conditions.
14. What do people with high LQ scores do?
A. They passively wait for activities to be assigned
B. They spend much of their time outdoors.
C. They are good at managing their work time.
D. They choose activities that match their potential.
15. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Getting to relax after homework is a “junk experience” .
B. Activities with positive feedback help to improve our LQ.
C. Activities with passive feedback may improve quality of life.
D. LQ index helps people avoid depression and mental illnesses.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. B

On Lin’s eleventh birthday, he was given a gift that shaped his life. On that day, his father took him to the Children’s Activity Center and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
Lin had learned many things before which were chosen by his parents, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. This time Lin’s parents would let him make his own decisions.
Lin’s eyes moved down the notice board. He stopped at “Photography”. But the notice said that each student needed their own camera, so he gave up.
Then he saw it. “Cooking” sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient. It could be done alone and it was also creative.
Based on (基于) Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents’ surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the center every Saturday and practiced at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.
The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again. Now Lin runs (经营) a successful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he got as a child, and remembers the special gift he received many years ago.

Studying TCM also changed Hans’s mind and lifestyle. He used to be addicted to (沉迷于) electronic devices and stay up late every night, trapped in this fast-paced but unhealthy daily routine.

D. To show how scientists invent robots with different faces.
D

Lin had learned many things before which were chosen by his parents, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. This time Lin’s parents would let him make his own decisions.
