Dear Kate,
I’m more than delighted to hear from you. Knowing that you’re interested in Chinese traditional festivals, I’d like to introduce my favorite one, the Mid-Autumn Festival, to you.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, falling on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, enjoys great popularity nationwide. On this day, families get together for a big feast. Afterwards, we share mooncakes and admire the full moon, which stands for family reunion and happiness.
I love this festival because it provides my family with a precious opportunity to stay together. Those warm and quiet moments always make me feel blessed so much.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

Days later, I walked into the classroom and saw a letter on my desk. I unfolded it and found it was from Tom. He explained in the letter that his grandfather had fallen ill accidentally. Panicked, he had to pack up hurriedly and rushed home to look after his grandpa, leaving him no time to inform me in advance. He felt deeply hurt and confused by my cold attitude, and told me he truly cherished our precious friendship. As I read his sincere words, a wave of guilt washed over me. I realized I had jumped to blind conclusions.
Feeling terribly sorry, I decided to find him and have a talk with him. Ashamed and uneasy, I searched the campus and finally spotted him sitting alone on the playground. I walked towards him with butterflies in my stomach and apologized sincerely for my misunderstanding and rudeness. Much to my relief, Tom forgave me with a broad smile, sweeping away my embarrassment. We cleared up the misunderstanding, regained our close bond, and then devoted ourselves to preparing for the contest as before. From the experience I learned trust and sincere communication were the foundation of lasting friendship.

Hey, April is almost here. That means it’s time for Bike Month at Davis High. Forget the bus and the car. Ride your bike to school instead. It’s a healthier choice and much more fun when you ride with your friends. Many of our teachers already ride their bikes to work. You might even see them on the road.
Mr. Doe from the science department rides his bike every day. He lives 10 miles away from the school, but still gets here on time for his 8:30 class. Miss Hill, the English teacher, often races bikes on weekends. And math teacher Miss Brighton always has her pink bike locked up in front of the main teaching building. During this Bike Month, we hope you will be encouraged to ride your bikes more. We’ll have a bike competition with prizes in late April.
The first place winner will get a bike repair kit. Second place will receive a 30 dollar gift card to a local bike shop. And third place will get a set of bike lights. Join us for this activity and make it a ride to remember.

Incredible Train Journeys Around the World
Train journeys offer a unique way to see the world, cutting through rural areas and connecting great cities. Whether you’re seeking adventure, beautiful scenery, or cultural insight, these four rail trips deliver unforgettable experiences.
Bergensbanen, Norway
This astonishing route is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. Starting in Oslo and ending in Bergen, the journey covers the full range of Norway’s natural beauty over seven hours. The train moves through canyons (峡谷), crosses rivers, and travels through mountainsides, offering passengers breathtaking views of icy landscapes and green valleys that change with the seasons.

For experiencing the grand scenery of North America, Amtrak’s California Zephyr is unmatched. This three-day ride from Chicago to San Francisco extends over 3,900 kilometers. The Z21 train leaves daily from Beijing, carrying passengers from a world of modern architecture to the amazing Tibetan plateau. Along the 40-hour journey to Lhasa, you’ll see grazing yaks, colorful prayer flags, and snow-covered mountains. As the train climbs higher, the air grows thinner but the scenery becomes more magical — a true adventure into the heart of Asia.

A play, The Lion King, is showing at the theatre. The actors, dressed in colorful costumes, are homeless children from a local shelter, and they get this opportunity thanks to their teacher, Nasya, who knows well what these children are going through.
Nasya Mancini is a volunteer who has turned her painful childhood memories into a source of strength for helping others. As a young girl, she was crazy about acting. However, when she shared her dream of being an actress with her classmates, they didn’t understand and even shouted at her, “You? You’re not pretty at all. No one will ever like you.” Nasya came home in tears. Mom hugged her and said, “Don’t listen to them! You can be whatever you want to be. But you must know, one cannot shine brightly without experiencing doubts and sufferings.”
Though constantly bullied for her love of acting, Nasya kept trying hard to realize her dream. Then came a turning point in fifth grade. She won the first place in the school drama competition, which greatly increased her confidence. When she stood on the stage, Nasya shared in a firm voice that she loved acting and would realize her dream with all efforts regardless of others’ thoughts. It seemed a small step, but changed her life.
Now, acting is not just a job for Nasya — it gives her power to turn suffering into success. She uses her own story to encourage homeless children to find their voices on stage, “If you are determined and stick to your dream, you can achieve anything,” she says.
24. How does Nasya help the homeless children?
A. By telling them to ignore bad words.
B. By showing them the same struggles.
C. By offering them the chance to perform.
D. By teaching them some singing skills.
25. What happened to Nasya when she shared her dream with her classmates?
A. No one watched her play. B. Her classmates laughed at her.
C. She received encouragement. D. Her mom stopped her training.
26. What can we infer from Nasya’s words delivered on stage?
A. She lost confidence in acting.
B. She gave up acting because of doubts.
C. She cared too much about others’ ideas.
D. She made up her mind to follow her dream.
27. Which of the following best describe Nasya?
A. Kind and humorous. B. Caring and determined.
C. Curious and straight. D. Honest and considerate.
C
For years, northern Chinese cities have mainly relied on coal burning for winter heating. However, this common method causes serious air pollution and large amounts of carbon emissions (排放), which harms the local environment. To solve this environmental problem, Haiyang, a coastal city in Shandong Province, started using a new, eco-friendly heating technology — zero-carbon nuclear heating in 2019.
Different from the former heating methods, Haiyang’s nuclear heating project can make the most of nuclear (核能) energy. In the past, nearly two-thirds of the heat from the process of producing electricity was wasted and released into the air. Now, the city collects this leftover heat through professional heat exchange equipment and sends it to people’s homes for heating. Most importantly, the whole process produces no radiation, which is completely safe for local people.
The project began as a small experiment and has developed quickly and steadily. In 2021, it covered all city areas of Haiyang, and two years later, it served a nearby city, Weihai. So far, this green heating system has cut coal use by 1.3 million tons and reduced carbon emissions by 2.3 million tons, greatly improving winter air quality locally.
Local residents have clearly felt the great changes brought by this new technology. Compared with coal heating, nuclear heating provides more stable (稳定的) indoor temperatures and costs less. Workers who used to operate coal boilers also see huge improvement. Their old dusty and polluted workplaces have turned into clean, smart and modern control centers.
As a successful green energy project, Haiyang’s nuclear heating serves as a good example for global low-carbon development and environmental protection. It shows that nuclear energy has great potential in daily life. China is willing to provide the whole world with its technology and methods and work with other countries to deal with climate problems.
28. What is the main advantage of Haiyang’s nuclear heating system?
A. It makes use of waste heat. B. It gives off less radiation.
C. It ensures the safety of locals. D. It provides electricity for cities.
29. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The improvement of air quality in winters.
B. The sharp drop in coal use across northern China.
C. The development and achievements of the project.
D. The experiment of the newly developed technology.
30. How does the new heating technology benefit local people?
A. It changes their workplaces. B. It raises the indoor temperature.
C. It increases the heating costs. D. It improves their living condition.
31. What may China do in the future according to the text?
A. Promote the development of coal heating systems.
B. Offer its resources for the environmental protection.
C. Share its nuclear heating experience with other countries.
D. Keep the nuclear heating technology only for its own use.
D
Most people find their memory less sharp in their 80s or 90s than in their 50s. But a small group of individuals in their 80s and beyond do not experience this memory loss. Known as “superagers”, they have the same strikingly good memories as those 30 years younger. What keeps their brains so sharp?
Emily Rogalski, a brain scientist at the University of Chicago, has been studying super old people for years. Her team found that superagers have larger brain areas related to memory. More interestingly, they have four to five times more of a special type of brain cell, called Von Economo neurons (经济神经元), than normal older persons. However, gene (基因) does not seem to be the answer. When the researchers compared superagers with normal older adults, they found no obvious gene differences. Some superagers even carry genes that put them at high risk for Alzheimer’s, yet they remain sharp.
So, what makes the difference? Rogalski says the most important factor is social connection. Superagers tend to stay connected with others, often with much younger people. They volunteer in schools, keep in touch with grandchildren, or join in community activities. Another key quality is resilience — the ability to overcome difficulties. One superager Rogalski interviewed survived a concentration camp. Others lost children at a young age. Instead of giving up, they chose to move forward.
“Our brain loves nothing more than to do something new and challenging,” Rogalski says. Her advice is simple: don’t just listen to music on your way home — call a friend instead. She compares socializing to physical exercise: just as we lift weights to build muscle, we need to have conversations — especially with people we don’t know — to keep our brain active. For Rogalski, it is the real lesson of superagers: aging well is not just about good genes. It is about staying connected, staying curious, and never stopping learning.

I fell in love with English at the age of 11. When I entered senior high school, I met Tom, who had the same interest as me. We got along well and soon became close friends. We studied together, discussed difficult problems and shared practical learning methods. Whenever either of us felt upset or ran into trouble, we would cheer each other up. Having lived through countless sweet and tough moments side by side, we built an increasingly strong friendship. I once firmly believed that nothing could ever shake our precious friendship.
One day, our teacher informed us that the school would hold an English speech contest. Greatly interested in this activity, Tom and I both signed up for it immediately. We decided to collect materials, polish (润色) our speech drafts (草稿) and practice spoken English with each other. At that time, I believed that we could make constant progress through joint efforts.
Last week, we planned to practice our speech on the playground after class. I arrived on schedule and waited for a long time, but Tom failed to show up, which made me confused and disappointed. Later, a classmate told me Tom had stayed in the classroom. I thought that he kept all the materials to himself to get a better score in the competition. The idea that he cared about the contest more than our friendship really hurt me.
From then on, I treated Tom coldly. Whenever he tried to talk to me, I turned away and ignored him completely. I stopped communicating and studying with him. Gradually, the warmth between us faded away, and it seemed that our friendship fell apart.
