People in ancient China worked long hours each day. To relax, they invented many games. Here are some of them.

Shuttlecock (jianzi in Chinese) can go back to over 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty. This traditional Chinese game is very simple. On a large field, the players were divided into two groups. Usually there were 2 to 10 people in each group. Everyone had three chances to get the ball into holes with a stick.
Cuju
As early as 2,000 years ago, cuju was known as the earliest form of football. The ball was made of leather (皮革). As a fun and relaxing game, cuju was used in the army to train soldiers. Its rules were similar to football’s. Each team usually had 12 or 16 players. No hands were allowed. Only feet and the head could be used. The ball should be kicked into the opposite goal.

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ________ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded (记录) all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers (志愿者). 69% of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ different feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.
9. Which of the following can be put in “ ________ ” in Paragraph 1?

C. By finding food for the chickens. D. By making the chickens happy.
12. What does the underlined word “identify” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Control. B. Hide. C. Tell. D. Hurt.

Something exciting happened at a world motorcycle race (比赛) on March 29, 2026. A French rider won first place on a Chinese motorcycle made by Zhang Xue Motor. This is the first time a Chinese motorcycle brand (品牌) has won such a top world race. It successfully ended the long-time lead of European and Japanese brands in this field.
The success comes from Zhang Xue, the 39-year-old founder of the brand. He was born in a poor village in Hunan. He had to leave school at 14 and work in a repair shop. Though he lived a hard life, he never gave up his dream of making the best Chinese motorcycle. To get a chance to show his skills, he once rode a broken motorcycle 100 kilometers in the rain to meet a reporter.
In 2024, Zhang set up his motorcycle company in Chongqing. He believed that only with self-developed engines (引擎) could the brand have its own future. He spent all his money and time developing new engines. Many people doubted him, but he kept working hard with his team day and night.
Finally, his hard work paid off. After the great victory, many people wanted to give him money to support his business, but he refused (拒绝) most of them. He said, “I don’t care about getting rich quickly. I just want to pay attention to my work. This victory is not the end, but a new beginning.” His story tells us that ordinary people can realize their dreams and make Chinese brands shine in the world.
13. What historic success did the Chinese motorcycle brand achieve?
A. Many investors offered money to support Zhang’s brand.
B. A Chinese motorcycle won a top-level world race in 2026.

④ His motorcycle won the world top race.
A. ②→①→③→④ B. ②→③→①→④ C. ①→②→③→④ D. ①→②→④→③

A. He didn’t trust the investors from outside.
B. He planned to develop other new products.
C. He had enough money to run his company well.
D. He hoped to keep moving forward and go for new goals.
16. What is the best title for the passage?

He says, “We don’t want to control them. We want to help them get better and go back to the wild.” Last year, three elephants went back to a forest reserve. Somboon walked with them for weeks to help them remember wild bamboo and find water.
