How to Become a Successful Learner
Everyone has the ability to learn. Experts on the science of learning will tell you that anyone can become a successful learner. However, many students do not realize this, and they have trouble learning.
每个人都拥有学习的能力。研究学习科学的专家会告诉你,任何人都能成为善于学习的人。然而很多学生并没有意识到这一点,因此他们在学习上屡屡受挫。
Studies show that the first key to becoming a successful learner is to have a growth mindset. This means, in part, believing in yourself. It also means setting goals, taking action, and meeting challenges. People with a growth mindset see mistakes as chances for learning, as they teach us how to improve.
研究表明,成为高效学习者的第一关键是拥有成长型思维。简单来说,这种思维一方面代表相信自己;同时也意味着树立目标、付诸行动、直面挑战。拥有成长型思维的人把错误看作学习的机会,因为错误能教会我们如何进步。
Research also shows that practice is important for learning. The more we practise, the better we learn. We learn best by practising new and difficult things. Sometimes it is also important to get guidance from a teacher or a coach. They can show us the right way to practise and give us important feedback and advice.
相关研究还证明,练习对学习至关重要。练习得越多,学习效果就越好。在接触新颖、有难度的内容时,我们的学习效率最高。除此之外,向老师或辅导者寻求指导也十分关键。他们会传授正确的练习方法,并给出有价值的反馈与建议。
In addition, studies show that students learn more when they hang out with other students who are serious about study. First, by being together, students can easily learn from each other. Second, students are challenged to do better by each other. This has been proven to encourage learner growth.
此外,研究发现,和学习态度端正的同学相伴,能显著提升自身学习效果。其一,同学们相处时可以互相取长补短;其二,同伴之间会形成良性竞争,督促彼此变得更优秀。事实证明,这一方式能够助力学习者不断进步。
Successful learners also use the best learning materials they can find. In the 21st century, this means using new technology and resources, not just textbooks. Since there are so many learning materials on the internet, it is important to think carefully and choose wisely what and how you study. Take advantage of the best tools and resources to learn wisely and efficiently.
优秀的学习者还会充分利用优质学习资料。身处21世纪,学习资源不只有课本,各类新兴科技与线上资源都可以加以运用。网络上学习资料繁杂,因此我们需要审慎思考,理性选择学习内容与学习方式。善用优质工具与资源,才能高效、智慧地学习。
Finally, successful learners see learning as part of daily life. It is something they will do even after they leave school, even when they are old. As you continue on your learning journey, you should try to walk at your own speed and enjoy the trip. Never lose heart. The road ahead of you may be long and may have many mountains and valleys, but it also has great treasure. You will find more joy in living a life with learning!
最后,善于学习的人会把学习融入日常生活。即便走出校园、步入晚年,他们也始终坚持学习。在漫漫求学路上,不必追赶他人节奏,好好享受学习的过程。永远不要灰心。前路或许漫长,充满坎坷起伏,但沿途藏着无尽收获。终身学习,生活会收获更多乐趣!

If you don’t know the meaning of “farmer”, try looking at parts of the word. You might know that a “farm” is 34 place where people grow crops and vegetables. If you put your history notes under your pillow and sleep on them the night before an exam, will you do any better in the exam? Most of us have hoped this may help. However, knowledge can’t go through the pillow into your brain. But that doesn’t mean you can’t learn while you are asleep.
Scientists aren’t exactly sure how it works, but they have discovered that the brain can learn things during sleeping hours.
In one experiment, researchers gave German speakers some Dutch words to learn. Then, they divided them into three groups. The researchers played the Dutch words for people in Group 1 while they were asleep, without telling these German speakers what they were doing. The sound was low so it didn’t wake them up, and only the newly introduced words were used.
Another group listened to the same words while they were awake. The researchers found the people in Group 1 were better able to identify (识别) and translate the words later. This was true only for the words that were played while they slept. The third group listened to the words when they walked. The walkers didn’t have the same success in remembering the words as the sleeping group.
The researchers later found that people had more slow-wave brain activities all over the night. They said that more slow waves made people have a better memory for the new words.
56.When did the researchers play foreign words for people in Group 1 in the experiment?
A.Before they went for a walk. B.Before they went to bed.
C.When they were asleep. D.When they were having dinner.

If the word “shelter” doesn’t look familiar (熟悉的), look at the words around it. “Rain” and “house” might give you helpful information.
If the context doesn’t help, look at the parts 32 the word. Does it have any parts you know? These 33 help you understand what it means.
