第四部分 读写综合(共两节,满分25分)
第一节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Cultural differences of “old”
I'm Jack. When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect elders.
Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.
I had a part time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. Once, when I was serving food to the Smiths, Mrs. Smith asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I answered “I made sure you got your food quickly because I always respect the elderly.” As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager took me aside and told me how sensitive(敏感的) Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized to Mrs. Smith. After Mrs. Smith heard my reason, she laughed and was no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old and they respect the elderly most. Young people always hope to have more knowledge and experience just as the elderly do.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire(退休) or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old. Exercising, jogging, and putting on makeup are common ways for them to look young.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don't show my feelings through words. And I will learn more about cultural differences to avoid making mistakes when communicating with people in different countries.
56. What did Jack's family bring to America?
57. Was Mrs. Smith pleased with what Jack said to her at first?
58. What do young people in China think of the elderly?
59. How do the Americans usually make themselves look young?
60. Why will Jack learn more about cultural differences?

Last summer, I went to the mountains with my family for a vacation. The weather was nice at first, and we went hiking along the beautiful paths. Suddenly, it started to rain heavily, and soon we experienced a big flood. Water ran down the hills quickly, and we were a little afraid. Luckily, our guide was very experienced. He told us to stay calm and follow him closely. We moved quickly to a safe and high place. In the end, we were all safe. From this special experience, I learned an important lesson—— we must respect nature and always keep safe when we are close to the natural world.
