38-year-old Chris Ringot lives in Missouri and was born with Down syndrome (唐氏综合症). He began taking part in the Special Olympics at the age of 10 and has kept it up for decades. He has tried various events including golf, bowling and basketball, but swimming is his lifelong favorite. The first time he swam in a pool, he showed extraordinary natural talent and quickly fell in love with this sport.
Swimming soon became the most important part of his life. The friendship and team atmosphere in the Special Olympics meant a lot to him, especially during his teenage years. Chris turned into a top athlete in competitions. In 2011, he was selected to join the Special Olympics World Games held in Greece, where his relay team won a gold medal. This unforgettable experience became a precious memory for him.
After returning home from the World Games, Chris was invited to give inspirational speeches to local communities and schools. His speech at his alma mater was praised by a local newspaper editor as the best back-to-school speech he had ever heard.
Last year, Chris was inducted into the Special Olympics Missouri Hall of Fame. This honor recognized not only his athletic achievements but also his positive influence on other disabled athletes. His elder sister Carrie said she never doubted Chris’s success. “Our parents set a good example for us. They always told us Chris can do anything I can do, and often he does it better,” she said.
Chris is also grateful to his parents for teaching him to give back to the community. He serves in his local church with his wife and has worked as an assistant in a children’s hospital for seven years. Recently, he realized his childhood dream — becoming a swimming coach for the Special Olympics. “This is a huge milestone for me,” Chris said. “I hope to pass on my swimming skills and experience to young players.”

What if you could use the plastic waste littering your home country to help solve its housing crisis? For architect Oscar Andrés Méndez and his business partner, electronics engineer Isabel Cristina Gámez, that inspiration led to an invention. Their Colombia-based company, Conceptos Plásticos, transforms plastic, including bags, snack-food containers, and shampoo bottles, into a modular (BH) building system of bricks and columns.
The Lego-like blocks are made of about 95 percent plastic; builders only need to supply a roof and windows. A typical two-bedroom house recovers some six tons of plastic and can be built in about five days at a cost of anywhere from 4,000 to 7,000-far cheaper than traditional construction. The structures are also earthquake-resistant, fireproof, and durable.
Initially, Conceptos Plásticos partnered with private companies to build houses and schools in Colombia. Years ago, they learned from UNICEF’s representative in Côte d’Ivoire about plastic waste blocking drains and the shortage of schools in the country. Visiting Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, they were moved to see women carrying children while collecting plastic for little pay. “We have the solution,” Méndez remembers thinking. Conceptos Plásticos had the technology. They just needed to share it.
As part of a three-million-dollar deal with UNICEF, Conceptos Plásticos built a new factory in Abidjan and hired workers, mainly women, to source the plastic needed. So far, over 4,000 tons of plastic have been transformed into more than 550 classrooms. The effort has created a circular economy (循环经济) that removes waste from the environment, improves the educational system by way of well-designed buildings, and creates jobs.
Méndez and Gámez are now negotiating a similar school project in Ethiopia and investigating how to build bathrooms in poor areas in South Sudan. To share their technology in places where building new factories may present challenges, the partners recently designed a smaller version of their system that can be transported in a 40-foot container. It may run on waste, but the concept is not just beautiful but brilliant.
28. What can be learned about Méndez and Gámez’s invention?
A. It supplies roofs and windows. B. It creates new plastic materials.
C. It turns waste into treasure. D. It improves builders’ safety.
29. Which of the following can best describe Conceptos Plásticos’ product?
A. Flexible and free. B. Time-consuming but green.
C. Labour-intensive but cheap. D. Economical and sustainable.
30. What does the specific data in the paragraph 4 imply?
A. The scale of plastic waste. B. The impact of the project.
C. The efforts made by local government. D. The challenges Conceptos Plásticos faced.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward the project of Conceptos Plásticos?
A. Doubtful but tolerant. B. Positive and admiring.
C. Critical but objective. D. Uncertain and unconcerned.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Noah and his mother were doing their weekly grocery shopping in the supermarket when he spotted a leather wallet lying on the ground. He bent down to pick it up and noticed a delicate coffee bean pattern on its surface, which reminded him of his part-time working experience in a coffee shop back in his college days.
Inside the wallet were a large sum of cash and a business card printed with a phone number. Noah and his mother had been living a hard and tight life, relying entirely on his mother’s endless hard work to make ends meet. Having been out of work for months and struggling desperately to land a suitable job, Noah was trapped in a tough financial dilemma.
“Should I keep the wallet?” he murmured to himself, the tempting thought of easing his family’s financial burden flashing through his mind. “This money could really get us through the hard times.” However, a strong sense of guilt soon came flooding back. “Mother would be extremely disappointed if she found out,” he whispered, holding the wallet firmly in his hand. Noticing his strange behavior and obvious hesitation, Noah’s mother asked him what was bothering him. He told her the whole story and his inner conflict honestly. In a soft yet firm tone, his mother taught him the most precious life principle. “We must never take what doesn’t belong to us, Noah.”
Noah’s face flushed with mixed feelings of embarrassment and helplessness. “We have piles of bills to pay without a steady income, and this money could change our current situation,” he explained reluctantly. His mother fully understood their hardship but still urged him to do the right thing, adding that doing good deeds would bring him unexpected blessings in return.
Eventually, Noah made up his mind and dialed the number on the business card. The wallet’s owner was an elderly man, who was extremely grateful to get his wallet back. He explained that the cash was intended for his son Mason, who was about to start his own coffee shop business. After returning the wallet, Noah felt a warm sense of satisfaction deep inside, though he still worried about his job hunting and family finances.

W: Me, too. I’m so happy we will be on vacation from today on.
M: But I am not sure what to do during the holidays. Any suggestions?
W: Well, going to a cinema, visiting the galleries, exhibitions and museums, meeting old friends, exercising in the health club or mountain biking. There are so many good choices.
M: The problem is that I find all of them are full of fun. I just don’t know what to do first.
W: Why not start with the most interesting one?
M: Actually, the more choices I have, the harder I find it to make a decision.
W: Why not join us in the mountain biking? We’ll gather in front of the park tomorrow.
M: Sounds great. When?
W: At 8:30 am. Don’t be late.
M: OK.

M: Excuse me, Mary.
W: Yes? You look so worried. Is everything OK?
M: Well, two of my friends just called me saying they will come to visit me tomorrow. I haven’t seen them for a while and… They’ve helped me a lot when I was working with them last year. So I’d like to return the favor by cooking a dinner for them. And the day after tomorrow I’m going to show them around the new museum of our city.
W: Oh no! It’s Friday today. You once promised me that we would go to a concert this weekend!
M: Yes, I know. I am terribly sorry.
W: I have already booked the tickets for tomorrow’s concert and you know I really look forward to attending it!
M: I’m really really sorry but I can’t go with you, dear. I promise I’ll make it up to you next time.
W: Wait a second… are you saying… I can go?
M: Yes, I know how much you enjoy concerts. So I will be at home receiving my friends and I will cook the dinner for them.
W: Thank you so much for doing this for me, dear.
M: Well, I guess that’s why you married me.

A couple of days later, a sudden call reached Noah. It was Mason, the young entrepreneur planning to run the coffee shop, who had learned about Noah’s honesty and kindness from his father. Knowing Noah had rich practical working experience in a coffee shop and was a trustworthy and diligent young man, Mason sincerely offered him an interview opportunity for a key position in his new store. Overwhelmed with surprise and joy, Noah hurried to the interview without delay. His professional skills, rich experience and sincere attitude left a wonderful impression on Mason, who decided to hire him immediately. The steady salary soon greatly eased Noah and his mother’s heavy financial pressure.
Before long, Noah was made manager of Mason’s coffee shop. Wholeheartedly devoted to his new job, Noah managed the shop’s daily operations carefully, served every customer with enthusiasm, and improved coffee production with his previous work experience. Thanks to his diligent efforts and thoughtful management, the coffee shop soon became hugely popular and attracted a large number of regular customers. Noah finally bid farewell to unemployment and lived a stable and happy life with his mother. He eventually understood his mother’s words deeply: honesty is not only a virtue, but also the best fortune that brings warm rewards and bright prospects in life.
