Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m Li Hua. I’m writing to apply to be a volunteer for the Cultural Exchange Activity.
I can speak good English and I’m good at expressing myself, so I can communicate well with foreign students. Besides, I am familiar with Chinese culture and customs. More importantly, I have volunteered in lots of our school activities, and I once helped foreigners learn Chinese, so I have experience for this job.
If I get the chance, I will teach foreign students useful Chinese expressions for daily use. I’ll also introduce Chinese customs like table manners and Spring Festival traditions to them. I hope to spread Chinese culture and help them learn more about China, so that they can understand China better.
I believe I can finish the work well. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Screen time balanced
Screens can be fun but it’s good to make sure you’re using them properly.
Whether you’re watching a film with your family or researching your homework, screens can be useful. However, spending too much time on them can make you miss out on other things. It is also bad for your health.
Why is screen time so tempting (诱人的)?
“Screen time is designed to be tempting,” says psychologist Jonathan Haidt, “App makers use bright colours, pop-up messages, daily rewards (奖励) and small games to tempt you.” If you know how the apps are designed, you can make good decisions about the time you spend on screens.
Making good choices
Haidt’s book, The Amazing Generation, gives some suggestions on how to help reduce your screen time.
* Try to not have your own smartphone until you are around 14 years old.
* Set a timer to remind you when to take a break from your screen.
* Use technology as a tool. Don’t let technology use you.
* Fill your life with real friendships, freedom and lots of fun.
You could try them to help you use screens in a balanced and proper way.
“I have set a timer on my screen.”
It’s all about balance. I have set a timer to help me control the time I’m spending on screens. In my free time, I like to read instead of watching screens. I also like to go for walks to see the scenery and get exercise at the same time.
16. What do app makers use to tempt people?
① dark colours ②pop-up messages ③daily rewards ④small games
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ①③④
17. Which suggestion for reducing screen time is from the text?

C. Try to not own a phone until 18. D. Avoid using screens before sleep.
18. In which part of the magazine can we read the text?
A. Health. B. Food. C. Sports. D. Culture.

Have you seen the popular funny meme (表情包) of a grandpa tasting something delicious and saying “nice” with a bright smile? His name is Michael Rosen, an 80-year-old famous British children’s book writer. In April 2026, he won the Hans Christian Andersen Award (HCAA) for writing. It is one of the biggest prizes for children’s book writers around the world.
Michael Rosen started writing at the age of 12 and never stopped, even after losing his job, losing his son, and fighting a serious illness. For him, writing is not just a job — it is what he truly loves. In Michael Rosen’s Sad Book, he speaks openly about the death of his son and shares his sadness. He teaches children that being honest about their feelings is not weak. After COVID-19, he created Many Different Kinds of Love, which shows his spirit of finding hope in difficult times.
Along with Rosen, 79-year-old Chinese illustrator (插画师) Cai Gao won the same award for illustration this year. She is the first Chinese person to receive this great honor. To many people’s surprise, Cai never went to an art school and didn’t begin to draw for children’s books until her 30s. Even so, she loved drawing from an early age and learned it by herself.
Cai Gao has created over 40 books. Her great works like Bao Er and The Land of Peach Blossoms show traditional Chinese culture with warm and creative ideas. Through her beautiful pictures, she encourages children to create beauty and peace in their own lives.

Recently, a relaxing activity called “colour walks” has become very popular. Starting a colour walk is easy. You don’t need a special place to go or any preparation for it. Just choose one colour and walk around the street to look for things in that colour. Take photos of things you find. This simple act brings you a relaxing and nice journey.
This kind of walking helps people take a short break from stress and find small beautiful moments in daily life. Young people all over the world like it so much that they often share their experiences on social media. The topic of colour walks has got lots of attention.
Ms. Kang always felt anxious about her work. As soon as she learned about the activity online, she started her first colour walk and chose green. During the 20-minute walk, she focused only on green things, and her worries slowly went away. A college student also tried it to deal with exam stress. She looked for bright yellow and found sunshine, flowers and warm yellow signs. She saw so many beauties in the school and felt better quickly.
Noticing colours is a central part of the relaxing process, as different colours bring different feelings. According to a colour psychology (心理学) study, soft colours like blue and green quickly calm people, while bright colours such as yellow and orange can make you happier.
In fact, the goal is not to pick the “right” colour. Just slow down through walking and searching, and notice the beauty we often missed before. On busy days, give yourself 20 minutes. Forget your troubles, and focus only on how you feel and the colours around you. This is a great way to care for yourself.
23. Which is true about “colour walks”?
A. People walk around to learn and enjoy the outside world.
B. People find one-colour things and take photos while walking.
C. People have to make good preparations before going to walk.
D. People must choose a special place before going for a walk.

25. What can Bob do if he feels sad according to Para. 4?
A. He can have a good sleep to forget all troubles.
B. He can find colourful things in just 20 minutes.
C. He can walk out and look for something orange.
D. He can go out and take some photos of grey sky.
26. What’s the best title for this text?
A. Eat light, walk right. B. Colour walks, relaxing life.
C. Refuse pressure, hug calm. D. Different colours, different feelings.

Think about a world without insects. It might sound really nice at first. There would be no noisy flies (苍蝇) in your room or other small dirty insects around us. But in fact, this could be very bad news and bring big trouble to our earth.
According to the scientist Dave Goulson, the total number of insects is getting smaller and smaller these years. “In the 27 years from 1989 to 2016, the number of insects dropped by 75 percent,” Goulson wrote. Scientists say that pesticides (农药) are the main cause. People use lots of them in modern farming and they are harmful to insects’ homes.
What would happen without insects? It’s almost impossible to answer, but the results would be serious. Firstly, they help plants with pollination so that plants can grow fruit well. Besides, they break down dead plants and animals and change them into new, useful things. This helps to keep the soil (土壤) healthy for plants to grow. Insects are also main food for many small animals. Without insects, those animals would have nothing to eat. They would go hungry and die slowly. Then, the ecosystem would not be balanced.
Luckily, we can take action to stop this. The first step is to let more people know even little insects play an important role in our life. Not only that, we should love and take care of everything in nature. Then we can enjoy rich food, fresh air and clean water from the natural world for a long time. Goulson said, “The best place to start is with our children. We should encourage them to protect the environment from an early age.”
27. What can we learn from Para. 1?
A. The flies and other insects actually are not dirty.
B. Insects in our world bring big trouble to the earth.
C. We will get into big trouble if there are no insects.
D. There may be no noisy flies or other insects one day.
28. What’s the main reason for fewer insects?
A. Insects can’t find enough food. B. People use too many pesticides.
C. The ecosystem is not balanced. D. People hate insects and kill them.
29. How do insects help balance the ecosystem according to Para. 3?
A. ②③④ B. ①③④ C. ①②④ D. ①②③
30. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To advise people to avoid using the pesticides.
B. To let more people know the importance of flies.
C. To call on more people to protect unlovely insects.
D. To explain what would happen without insects.
