The Three Gorges Dam (三峡大坝), lying on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, is one of the largest and most amazing engineering projects in the world. It stands proudly between the beautiful mountains of Xiling Gorge, showing the wisdom and hard work of the Chinese people.
The Yangtze River, China’s longest river, often caused serious floods in the past, bringing disasters to millions of people. To solve this problem and create clean energy, the Chinese government decided to build a huge dam.
People began to build the Three Gorges Dam in 1994. And it took over 12 years to complete. Thousands of workers used modern machines and technology to make this dream come true. They moved mountains, changed the river’s path (路径) to build the dam, which is about 2. 3 kilometers long and 185 meters high —as tall as a 60-story building!
Today, the dam plays a key role in China. It has greatly reduced flood risks, protecting cities and farmlands. The dam’s power stations produce clean electricity for millions of homes and factories, helping reduce air pollution. Its connected vessel system (连通器系统) helps ships pass. Ships enter a lock (水闸), and gates close. Water level inside the lock rises or falls to match the next section. When the water levels become the same, gates open, and the ship moves to the next lock.
The Three Gorges Dam is not just a dam—it’s a symbol of China’s courage and creativity. Visitors from around the world come to see this modern wonder. Students learn about its scientific achievements and the spirit of teamwork behind it. The dam teaches us that with determination (决心), humans can overcome even the most difficult challenges of nature.

四、读写结合(共两节,满分25分)
第一节 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,用英文填空或回答问题。(注意每小题的词数要求)
Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants (蚂蚁) can count their steps to avoid (避免) getting lost. These ants live in the open desert, so they have nothing to guide them along the way.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense (感觉) of smell. They can smell even a drop (滴) of their home water in a large sea area. Some seabirds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.
Scientific research shows that some animals are born with certain unusual abilities for ____46____. (仅填1词)

例文
Dear Grandparents,
How is it going? I haven’t seen you for two years, and I miss you very much. I’ve adapted to life in Beijing. My daily routine has changed a lot—I now get up earlier to read Chinese texts aloud. The most amazing change is in food. I’ve learned to use chopsticks and enjoy various traditional dishes like dumplings. What’s more, I often do tai chi in the park with neighbors instead of playing football, which makes me stronger than before.
I wish you happiness and health!
Yours,
Dave
