What will happen when rice fields meet 3D? Let’s go and see.
The eye-catching rice fields are in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. They’re part of a theme park. In the past few years, millions of people have come to enjoy the beauty of rice fields there.
Who created them? The Xibo farmers. The Xibo, one of China’s 56 ethnic(民族的) groups, has a tradition of creating art on rice fields. In the past, the farmers just made use of different colors of rice plants to create their field art. But now their field art is becoming more and more delicate(精致的) thanks to new technology. Now farmers can design(设计) their rice fields before they start to plant, so they can grow their rice plants just in the right place. It also makes it possible to control the height of each plant. Different heights of rice plants are the key to creating 3D field art.
From the famous Chinese hero Nezha to a large elephant, the Xibo farmers get their ideas of rice field art from almost everything in life. It is so cool, isn’t it?

I’d always dreamed of visiting Africa, ever since I read my first Tarzan comic as a child. Finally, in 2004, to celebrate my 60th birthday, I went to Tanzania to experience a safari(游猎) and climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. The person who seated next to me on the flight was Tanzania’s Minister of Water and Wildlife Development. We talked for thousands of miles, and he arranged(安排) me to visit a school. When I arrived at the school, I was shocked. The dirt floors turned into mud during the rainy season, and the walls couldn’t keep out the heat, cold or bugs(小昆虫). The school was in need of building materials.
It broke my heart that these children had to try hard to survive, so I asked the headmaster how much it would cost to feed them. “As little as 20 cents per child per day,” he told me. Immediately after I got back, I set up Kids of Kilimanjaro. Since then we’ve grown big enough to provide hot lunches for nearly 13,000 school children in Tanzania every day. The free lunch programme has solved an essential(基本的) problem the children face.
I know good education could really make a difference to these children’s lives. My parents always told me the importance of education. I paid my own way through college in Tokyo by teaching English to students and business people. After attending university I moved to San Francisco, when I was 25 years old. In 1978, I realized my American dream when I founded my own company. My success all started with good education.
It’s amazing that something as simple as a hot lunch can change so many lives. Giving young people a better, healthier life can encourage them to go all the way through college and lead a change in their country.

Have you ever entered a tropical rainforest(热带雨林)? Rainforests make up only a small part of the Earth’s surface, about six percent, but there are more kinds of trees than any other area in the whole world.
Tropical rainforests are in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, Australia, and on the Pacific islands. The largest tropical rainforest is the Amazon(亚马逊) Rainforest in South America, which covers 1.2 billion acre(英亩), or almost five million square kilometres. The second largest rainforest is in Western Africa.
Rainforests provide us with many things. In fact, the Amazon Rainforest is the “lungs of our planet” because it produces 20% of the world’s oxygen(氧气). One fifth of the world’s fresh water is also found in the Amazon Rainforest. What’s more, one half of the world’s species of animals, plants and insects live in the Earth’s rainforests. 80% of the food we eat first grew in the rainforests. 25% of the drugs we take when we are sick are made of plants that grow only in the rainforests. Some of these drugs are even used to fight and cure cancer.
There are four different levels of trees in a rainforest. The forest floor is the lowest layer(层) full of animal life and receives the least amount of light. The under layer is the dark, cool environment under the leaves but over the ground. The canopy(树冠) layer is the upper parts of most of the trees. The emergent(突出的) layer contains a small number of very tall trees.
These different parts of a rainforest exist together to create an ecosystem for many animals, plants and human beings.

The Chinese language is one of the oldest and most complex languages in the world. It has a long history and its characters have gone through many changes over the centuries.
The earliest form of Chinese characters was pictographs(象形文字). These characters were simple pictures that meant an object or action. For example, the character for “tree” was a picture of a tree and the character for “sun” was a picture for sun. Over time, these pictographs became more abstract(抽象的) and changed into ideographs(表意文字). Ideographs were characters that meant an idea or a concept. The third stage of Chinese characters was the introduction of phonetic components(语音成分). It allowed people to know a word without having to draw a picture of it. Phonetic components are small pieces of a character that mean the sound of the word. For example, the character for “horse” is made up of the phonetic components for “ma” and “horse”.
Finally, Chinese characters developed into the modern forms we see today. These characters are made up of a combination(结合体) of pictographs, ideographs and phonetic components. This has made Chinese characters much easier to learn and remember, as they are now made up of smaller parts that are easier to remember and recognize.
The change of Chinese characters has had a major influence on Chinese culture and society. For centuries, Chinese characters were the only way to communicate and write. This allowed Chinese culture and language to spread through the world. It also allowed people to share their ideas and thoughts with each other, which led to the development of rich and diverse cultures. Today, Chinese characters are still used in China and many other countries. They are important parts of Chinese culture, and they continue to change. Chinese characters reflect creativity of the Chinese people, and they will continue to be an important part of Chinese culture for many years to come.

March 5 is a special day for Chinese people because of the name Lei Feng. Lei Feng was an ordinary young soldier whose only goal was to serve the people. He was born in 1940 and died at the age of 22 because of an unfortunate accident while he was working. In 1963, Chairman Mao Zedong designated(指定) the day as “Learn From Lei Feng Day”.
Most people born in the 1960s or 1970s keep the strong admiration for the spirit of Lei Feng. What about young people today? Do they still believe in Lei Feng and follow his spirit? The following examples may answer the questions.
In 2011, 27-year-old Zhang Liangliang and his friends made a movie where an ordinary guy tries to become a superhero by emulating(模仿) Lei Feng. The movie named Lei Feng Xia has been seen by millions of people online.
“Some people these days are only interested in success, fame and money, which means they’re not really well-grounded(脚踏实地). They need to go back to a good starting point.” said Wang Wei, a young teacher from Zhuhai.
“We can see great things from what Lei Feng did, even though they were just small things. It’s just like the reflection of the sun in a drop of water. It’s our duty to learn from him.” said Li Huanyue, a student from Wen Yuan Middle School.
And with the development of society, learning from Lei Feng should be more realistic(实际的) and modern than before. In order to do this, Guangdong government announced the new slogan “do each other a favor”. And in Changsha, Hunan, the hometown of Lei Feng, the slogan was also updated from “devote yourself to benefit others” to “do my duty”.

Astronauts go on spacewalks for many reasons. Spacewalks let astronauts work outside their spacecraft(飞行器) while still in space. Astronauts can do science experiments on a spacewalk. Spacewalks also let astronauts test new equipment(设备). They can repair spacecraft in space instead of bringing them back to the Earth to fix.
When astronauts go on spacewalks, they wear spacesuits with pure oxygen(纯氧) inside to keep themselves safe. Once in their suits, astronauts breathe oxygen for a few hours. Breathing only oxygen can help clear out all the nitrogen(氮气) in an astronaut’s body. If they didn’t clear out the nitrogen, the astronauts might get gas bubbles(气泡) in their body and the bubbles will do them harm. These gas bubbles can cause pain in astronauts’ shoulders and knees. This pain is called getting “the bends(减压病)” because it has influences on the places where the body bends.
Astronauts are now ready to get out of their spacecraft. They leave the spacecraft through a special door called an airlock. The use of the airlock is to stop air getting out. The airlock has two doors. When astronauts get ready to go on a spacewalk, they go through the first door and lock it tight behind them. They can then open the second door without any air getting out of the spacecraft. After a spacewalk, astronauts go back inside through the airlock.
How do astronauts stay safe during spacewalks? They use safety ropes to keep themselves from floating away(飘离) into space. When on a spacewalk, one end of the safety rope is hooked (钩住) to the space walker while the other end is connected to the spacecraft. Astronauts also use ropes to keep tools from floating away. They tie their tools to their spacesuits.
Another way astronauts stay safe during spacewalks is by wearing a SAFER. If an astronaut were to float away, the SAFER would help him or her fly back to the spacecraft. Astronauts control the SAFER with a small joystick(控制杆), like on a video game.
31. ________________________ let astronauts work outside their spacecraft.
32. ________________________ can cause pain in astronauts’ shoulders and knees.
33. The airlock ________________________ stop air getting out.
34. Astronauts keep themselves from floating away into space by ________________________ or wearing a
SAFER.
35. How do astronauts control the SAFER in space?
