The city of Petra, capital of the Nabataean Arabs, is one of the most famous archaeological (考古学的) sites in the world. It is located 240 km south of the capital Amman and 120 km north of the red sea town of Aqaba. Petra, the world wonder, is undoubtedly Jordan’s most valuable treasure and greatest tourist attraction, and it is visited by tourists from all over the world.
It is not known precisely when Petra was built, but the city began to prosper (兴旺)as the capital of the Nabataean Empire from the 1st century BC, which grew rich through trade in frankincense, myrrh, and spices. Petra was later occupied by the Roman Empire and continued to prosper until a large earthquake in 363 AD destroyed much of the city in the 4th century AD.The earthquake combined with changes in trade routes, eventually led to the downfall of the city which was ultimately abandoned.
By the middle of the 7th century Petra appears to have been largely deserted and it was then lost to all except local Bedouin from the area. In 1812 a Swiss explorer named Johannes Burckhardt set out to “rediscover” Petra; he dressed up as an Arab and convinced his Bedouin guide to take him to the lost city. After this, Petra became increasingly known in the West as a fascinating and beautiful ancient city, and it began attracting visitors and continues to do so today.
Petra is also known as the rose-red city, a name it gets from the wonderful color of the rock from which many of the city’s structures were carved. Smiley-faced potatoes encourage children to eat their vegetables, a study has found. The study published in the journal Nutrients found that potatoes played a significant role in school-aged children and their attitudes toward vegetables. Children between 3 and 18 should eat 2.5 to 3 cups of vegetables a day, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans—however, they usually only eat about 1 cup a day. As vegetables tend to have a more bitter taste, children often prefer foods that are saltier and sweeter. Vegetables are a key part of a healthy diet, though, and hold nutrients needed to strengthen the immune system.
Their unwillingness to eat vegetables can be a problem, especially in school-based settings, where it can also lead to food waste. For this reason, scientists started some mealtime observations to see how potatoes impacted what a child ate in a cafeteria at school. They discovered that children ate more vegetables when they were served alongside potatoes that look like smiley faces. This suggests that using fun shapes in foods can encourage children to eat more vegetables.
“Getting children to eat their vegetables is always a challenge. Potatoes not only add nutrients, like potassium, directly to the plate, but may also help encourage children to explore other vegetables that are served alongside and thereby help them get closer to their overall nutrition needs. These findings stress the wide-reaching impacts of school menus. We want vegetables on school lunch trays to fuel children’s bodies—not to fill the trash can,” principal investigator Gene Ahlborn said.
In the study, scientists found that seasoned potatoes were less appealing to children aged from 7 to 13.They also found that when the smiley-faced potatoes were served separately from vegetables, it did not encourage the children to eat them. However, when served directly alongside the vegetables, the smiley-faced potatoes did lead to fewer vegetables being wasted overall. The scientists believe these findings will not only help draw more children to vegetables but also help reduce food waste in cafeteria settings.

When Randolph County’s $242 million Riverstart Solar Park is completed in 2024, it is Indiana’s biggest. Thousands of photovoltaic panels (光伏板) covering 1,400 acres of rural land will generate enough clean electricity to power 36,000 homes.
Massive large solar farms like this can be a touchy subject with locals. So, in the lead-up to the project’s approval, the local government ensured the developer would be a good neighbor. They required the planting of pollinator-friendly (传粉者友好型) plants like wildflowers and clover, in addition to native grasses. It was the first such rule in state history.
Riverstart’s design takes into account the health of bee populations, which is critical because we depend on pollinators to fertilize our food plants—everything from apples to pears, blueberries to peaches. Bees are reducing in many parts of the world. The US Department of Agriculture funded a grant exploring the use of drones (无人机) to pollinate fruit crops in Washington State. For Randolph County, about 80 miles northeast of Indianapolis, the rule approval comes at a time when Indiana’s native pollinator species have declined below the number needed to pollinate crops.
Solar companies will sometimes enter into agreements with local farmers to allow sheep herds to eat the vegetation around the solar panels, providing another income stream for the farmer who is renting the land to the solar farm. Fencing keeps predators out, while the panels themselves shelter the sheep from sun and storms. Such natural grazing also encourages grass regrowth, increases manure nutrients to the soil, and avoids the costs and pollution of cutting grass.
Moving forward, solar farms could play a role in food security as well. With big utility-scale solar farms alone predicted to cover almost two million acres of land in the US by 2030, a huge opportunity is on the horizon to support pollinators, improve soil health, nurture biodiversity, produce food and, not least, reduce emissions, all at the same time.
