I used to have a motorcycle ()One Sunday in summer,my 10-year-old daughter and I went for
a ride in the countryside. We took the back roads to a park where the view was fantastic! The wind was strong
enough to give more pleasure to riding the motorcycle
Halfway through the park, the motorcycle was out of gas and stopped working, leaving my daughter and
me,20 miles from home,hopeless.
Along came a motorcyclist. He slowed, got off his motorcycle and asked what the problem was.He had
long hair and didn't look kind. Some people would have looked at him and said,"Oh,one of those unpleasant
people."But I've known many people like him, both good and bad,so I hoped that he was among the good
ones.
When I told him about our trouble,he offered to help.I rode his motorcycle with my daughter and he
pushed my motorcycle.Through hard work,we finally reached a small town next to the park.
On those days, most gas stations were closed on Sunday. They included the station in the town.My new
fiiend jumped on his motorcycle to search for an open gas station. Before long,he was back with some gas for
my motorcycle, and we were on our way again!Without accepting my payment for the gas he'd bought for us,
he just rode away.

Many children try to make their parents proud. But in some families,a child's success is always "on
show.Parents want praise from others, and the child may feel like a performer, not a person.
The term peacock parenting"comes from the idea of being "as proud as a peacock".Here it means a
self-centered style of parenting.A peacock parent may show off a "perfect family"in public, yet criticize the
child behind closed doors when the child fails to meet high expectations.Over time, the child may learn that
love is conditional. They may hide their real feelings, stop exploring their own interests, and start to believe,"I
amn not worthy.”
Experts describe three common signs. The first is psychological control. When the child sets a boundary
or feels upset, the parent may say,"You're too sensitive,"and tumn the blame back onto the child. This often
creates a sense of guilt. The second is unpredictable mood swings. The parent can be warm one day and cold
the next, making the child feel like they are "walking on eggshells".In adulthood, this may lead to
people-pleasing and weak boundaries. The third is role reversal. Some parents fail to provide proper care and
attention,or even expect their child to look after them emotionally or physically. As a result, the child may
grow up too fast and miss out on a normal childhood.
Healing takes time, but it is possible. The first step is to be kinder to yourself and reconnect with your own
interests.Supportive fiiends, groups,or professional help can provide the care that was previously missing.
Clear boundaries can also make a relationship safer, and if contact continues to cause harm, limiting contact
may be necessary. After all, there are many places to find warmth, and not all of them are under a parent's
roof.
28.What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To offer the solutions.
B.To describe a study.
C.To raise an issue.
D.To explain the causes.
29.What does "peacock parenting"in paragraph 2 mainly focus on?
A.Giving children unconditional family love secretly.
B.Teaching children to express real thoughts honestly.
C.Helping kids explore personal interests bravely.
D.Showing off the family image for public praise.
30.Which sign best matches"role reversal"in paragraph 3?
A.The parent praises the child in public.
B.The parent relies on the child for support.
C.The child tries to win others'approval.
D.The child avoids setting any boundaries.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Cut off contact with parents completely to stay safe.
B.Try their best to win parents'unconditional love again.
C.Move out immediately to find warmer places outside.
D.Build fimm personal boundaries and seek proper support.

Poet and Harvard Professor Henry Wadsworth Longfellow famously said,"Music is the universal
language of mankind."A new Harvard study suggests he may have been right.
The study conducted by a research team found that people around the world could identify lullabies
)dance songs,and comforting songs-regardless of the songs'cultural origin-after hearing just a
14-second clip ()The finding suggests that not only is music deeply rooted in human nature, but that
some types of songs break cultural boundaries.
The findings are based on a wide-reaching experiment in which 750 online participants in 60 countries
listened to brief clips of songs collected from nearly 90 small societies around the world, including
hunter-gatherers and some special farmers.Participants then answered six questions, rating each clip according
to whether they believed the song was used for dancing, calming a baby, treating illness,or expressing love
Two additional uses一nourning(哀悼)the dead and telling a story一were included as controls.
The data showed that despite participants'unfamiliarity with the cultures, the random sampling of each
song, and the short duration of the samples, people were able to reliably infer the songs'functions, and that
their ratings were consistent across the world.
The findings ran counter to expert expectations. The team had also asked professionals, including
performers, composers, psychologists, and scientists about whether they believed people would be able to
identify the song types.Their answer was no.And not only that, but they predicted that people's responses will
be inconsistent with one another."That's not what we found,"the researchers said.
The researchers also wanted to know whether listeners were recognizing certain non-musical
characteristics of the songs. To test that, the team conducted a second study. This time, they asked listeners
about a number of contextual and musical features, ranging from the gender of the singers to the rhythm of the
song.
When data from the two studies were combined, the results showed that songs of the same function
shared similar characteristics -lullabies,for example, tended to be slower and simpler than dance music-
suggesting that something about musical characteristics crosses cultural boundaries.
32.What did the participants do in the first study?
A.They distinguished functions of the songs
B.They identified the cultural origins of the songs.
C.They recognized the non-musical features of the songs.
D.They compared the rhythms from diverse music styles.
33.What does the underlined part "ran counter toin paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Were equal to.
B.Were similar to.
C.Were superior to.
D.Were opposite to.
34.Why did the researchers carry out the second study?
A.To test the musical knowledge of a wider audience.
B.To collect more diverse songs from various cultures
C.To confirm the surprising results from the first one.
D.To explore the underlying reasons behind the findings
35.What can we learn from the two studies?
A.Listeners recognize music by its rhythm
B.Something about music might be universal.
C.Dance music is usually slower and simpler.
D.Cultural similarities lead to similar musical features.

The adults in your life play an important role in shaping the person you are.Through their
encouragement and guidance, they help you to flourish, learn, and grow.Sometimes, though, you might forget
your appreciation for them.36 At these moments,it's hard not to focus on everything they're doing
wrong',but there are ways to reset and remind yourself of what you value about them.
●Keep talking.
It's easy to lock yourself away when you're upset with your parents or after an argument. It's normal for
healthy relationships to break down occasionally.37 The key to communicating well is to be open about
your feelings but try not to use your words to wound or punish.
.Why appreciation matters.
Life isn't always easy. But by looking for things to feel grateful for,you can reflect on the positives in life,
even in the toughest times.38 Building an attitude of gratitude takes time and practice.Noticing all
the good that your parents do will not only build and improve relationships, but create a positive cycle, where
everyone feels that their efforts are acknowledged.
●39
It might also help to keep in mind that even though the adults in your life can seem all-knowing,
they're actually just ordinary people with strengths and weakness.40 Often, they're only
trying to protect and guide you. This can feel annoying when you want to lead your own life and make
your own choices. But good communication is about compromise and can take a bit of practice.
Remember that your parents are learning, too!
A.That's not to say this is easy.
B.Grow together with your parents.
C.Parents always have the final say.
D.It is likely that your parents are doing their best.
E.Showing appreciation doesn't require great efforts
F.It's the making-up and repairing part that's important.
G.There might also be times when your relationship comes under extra pressure

It was our first time exploring a foreign country on our own, without a tour guide leading the way.My
friend Doris and I had a week-long tour there and believed we could explore this town alone then. After
breakfast,we confidently started the trip. After a full day of exciting exploration, the sky turned from clear
blue to gray, with dark clouds gathering.
As we walked along the ancient street to our hotel, raindrops began falling.Everyone around us took
cover."Should we take a taxi?"I asked aloud, the rain being so loud that I had to raise my voice."It's only a
ten-minute walk,and let's go much faster,"Doris shouted back.
As the rain and wind increased,we quickened our pace. The ancient street was soon covered with deep
water that quickly made our shoes totally wet.Suddenly, the big thunder sounded!Dusk had turned into total
darkness, which was only interrupted by the sudden lightning from the sky. Finally,we realized we had been
walking for a much longer time than it should have taken us to reach the hotel. We had taken a wrong turn
somewhere. We were lost! What's worse, both of our cell phones were powered off,so we couldn't call for
help,and the street was empty.
Shocked,we headed back down the street, wishing to find the right direction. It was still raining cats and
dogs. Our clothes and bags were completely wet.Later looking out into the darkness through the shrubs (
along the street,we realized we had come to a residential neighborhood."Let's just wait for a minute,"Doris
said.

The team had also asked professionals, including performers, composers, psychologists, and scientists about whether they believed people would be able to identify the song types. Their answer was no. And not only that, but they predicted that people’s responses will be inconsistent with one another. “That’s not what we found,” the researchers said.(这一发现ran counter to专家们的预期。

Dear fellow students,
Nowadays, it is common that many students suffer from eye strain. They overuse their eyes due to long hours of studying or using digital devices.
This problem not only damages our eyesight but also lowers our focus in class. Worse still, it could even lead to potential long-term eye conditions.
To address this, we should take regular breaks during study, such as following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds and keep doing eye exercises daily. Outdoor activities also count. Let’s work together to protect our eyes for a healthier campus life.
Yours,
Li Hua

That is my friend, ” I added, pointing to Doris, who was still under the tree. The woman nodded friendly, wearing a gentle smile. She seemed to relax as she inspected us and asked where we were trying to go. And then she attempted to show us directions in broken English.
I found her explanation of directions only confused us, however hard she tried. Then, the woman said, “Get in my car and I’ll take you back.” “That’s really nice of you, but we don’t want to get your seats wet, ” we responded, pointing to our wet clothes and bags. But she insisted. We were so tired that we finally went inside, hoping to get back as soon as possible. To our excitement, we soon reached our hotel. When we offered her some money in reward for her kindness, she just refused to take and wished us a good night. Waving goodbye to her, we witnessed her disappearing in the darkness. Although we were cold, our hearts were filled with warmth.
