Like many animal lovers,Tom and his wife,Linda, rarely passed an animal shelter
without stopping to look inside. They often dreamed of running their own rescue center one
day.
When Tom was iniured in a car accident in 2020,they decided it was time to take action.
Linda,who worked for a travel agency,was ready-to try.something new,and Tom needed a
slower pace after his recovery.
They started by talking to shelter managers and studving animal care."We knew it had to
be a small rescue because we couldn't compete with the hig organizations dollar for dollar,"
says Linda. One fact caught her attention:she had read that nearly 15 percent of homeless pets
were older animals, and many adopters were willing to pay extra for their medical care. She
and Tom themselves had adopted a senior dog before.
On New Year's Day 2021,they opened the "Old Friends Rescue and Cafe"near their
home. With two kids in high school, the coupie couldn't put all their savings into starting the
center. To cover the $80,000 costs, they used part of their savings and borrowed some from
friends-and a-bank.
The center just broke even in its first year, wath only 90,000 from donations and adoption

fees.Bu;Linda kept finding new ways to draw supporters. The cafe served homemade cookies
and offered free coffee to volunteers, hosted adoption events for animal lovers, and ran reading
programmes for children with pets. She also invited local vets to give free talks on senior pet
care
Today.Old Friends Rescue and Cafe makes about $320,000 a year. After paying for food,
medical bills, and three part-time helpers,Tom and Linda together take home around $28,000.

Along the river banks of the Amazon and the
Orinoco lives a most remarkable bird that swims
before it can fly, flies like a fat chicken, and feeds
almost entirely on leaves. Its digestive system
高二英语试卷第5页(共10页)
tunctions much like that of a cow,and when young,it even possesses sharp claws ()on its
wings.Fhis extraordinary creature is known as the hoatzin. To ensure the safety of its offspring,
the bird builds its nest about 4.6 meters above the river,a height carefully chosen to protect the
voung from predators such as snakes and monkeys.
In appearance, both male and female hoatzins are nearly identical. They have brown
feathers on the back, with cream and red colouring underneath.Their heads are relatively small,
topped with a large fan-like crest of feathers. They also have striking bright red eyes and bare
blue skin around the face.Interestingly, their closest relatives are not other strange birds, but
the common cuckoos. However, the most fascinating feature of the hoatzin is found only in the
young.
Baby hoatzins have a claw on the leading edge of each wing and another at the tip of each
wing.Using these four claws, together with their beaks ()they are able to climb skillfully
among the bushes and branches-a behaviour that strongly resembles what ancient, primitive
birds must have done millions of years ago.Once the young birds learn to fly, however, they
lose these claws completely, and the feature disappears forever.
During the drier months, from December to March, hoatzins gather in groups of 20 to 30
and move through the forest in search of food. But when the rainy season arrives in April, they
break into much smaller units of two to seven birds, devoting themselves to reproduction and
the careful raising of their young. This seasonal change in social behaviour reflects the
hoatzin's remarkable ability to adapt to the challenging conditions of its environment.
28.Why does the author mention the hoatzin's cow-like digestive system?
A.To prove that it eats more than other birds.
B.To describe how it adapts to its food chain
C.To show that the hoatzin is related to cows.
D.To explain how it survives on a diet of leaves.
高二英语试卷第6页(共10页)
20.What can we learn about the claws on a hoatzin's wings?
A.They domot last into adulthood.
B.They grow back after falling off.
C.They are used mainly for fighting.
D.They help the bird swim in the water.
30.What can we infer about primitive birds from the passage?
A.They had feathers on their heads to attract mates.
B.They were able to swim before they learned to fly.
C.They were probably able to climb through bushes.
D.They built their nests high above the river to be safe.
D
How words came into being is unknown. All we assume is that some early men invented
certain sounds,in one way or another,to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things,so
that they could talk with each other.Later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which
could be put together to show those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds,
whether spoken or written in letters, are called words.
The power of words, then, lies in their associations-the things they bring to our minds.
Words become filled with meaning for us by experience;and the longer we live, the more
certain words bring back to us the happy and sad events of our past;and the more we read and
learn, the larger the number of words that mean something to us becomes.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts
in words which have powerful effects on our minds and feelings. This clever use of words is
what we call rhetoric.Above all,the real poet is a master of words. He can express his
meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move
people to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly,
or they will make our speech silly and common.
From this we can see that words are not simply tools for communication. They carry the
weight of human history, emotion, and thought.Every time we speak or write,we are taking
高二英语试卷第7页(共10页)
part in a tradition that began thousands of years ago. When we use words poorly,we fail not
only ourselves but also those who listen. But when we use them well,we can inspire, comfort,
and teach. The study of words, therefore,is the study of life itself. Those who wish to express
themselves clearly must first understand the power that lies in every syllable.A single word,
placed correctly, can change a mind or lift a heart. That is why we must never stop learning
about language. That is why words will always matter.
31.We learn from the text that language might have begun with
A.expressions
B.actions
C.signs
D.sounds
32.What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2?
A.The learning of new words.
B.The importance of old words.
C.The relation of human experience with words.
D.The gradual change and development of words
33.In the third paragraph,the word"rhetoric"probably means
A.wording
B.grammar
C.quotation
D.vocabulary
34.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The power of language grows through experience and reading.
B.Great writers are those who can express great thoughts clearly.
C.Poets can move people to tears with their careful choice of words.
D.Language is a common way for people to share different inner ideas.

Jeanne Calment,the world's longest-living person.died in 1997 at the age of 122.She led
an active life even in her later-years:taking up skating at 85,making her first movie appearance
at 114,and holding a concert on her 121st birthday.35 If scientists can develop
effective anti-aging methods, such as special pills, targeted diets,or other treatments that slow
高二英语试卷第8页(共10页)
down the aging process, could we possibly live to 150 years old or even beyond that?
36 Jerry Shay,a rescarcher at the University of Texas,says Calment's 122-year
life shows that human life span can be longer than previously thought, and he thinks someone
alive today might reach 130 or 135.Steve Austad, another expert from the same university,
shares this optimism, noting that experts once insisted humans couldn't live past 110,but they
raised the limit to 120 after Calment surpassed it.
Rich Miller at the University of Michigan.points out that guessing how long humans can
live is nothing more than guesswork. He argues that even with advanced anti-aging techniques,
most people would likely only have their lives extended to around 120 years old, rather than
reaching 150 or more.37
Miller and George Martin of the University of Washington both support this cautious view.
Miller uses scientific studies on mice to explain his reasoning:current treatments can lengthen
mice's life span by 50%at most, and applying this to humans-with an average life span of 80
years-would only take us to 120.Martin holds the same opinion and gives another piece of
evidence.38 He uses flies as an example.Even when a fly's lifespan is extended, they
will never live 150 years, even if humans evolve into a new species that ages more slowly
In summary,as related research continues, two contrasting viewpoints exist.Optimistic
researchers expect anti-aging advances to break Calment's longevity record, while cautious
scientists insist that biology sets a natural lifespan cap.39
A.Researchers don't entirely agree on the answers.
B.Some researchers hold an optimistic view on these questions
C.For now,it is still unknown whether people can live up to 150.
D(He adds that while life span is flexible,it still has a natural limit.
E.Sueh views show that other researchers are more careful and realistic.
F So what can we conclude from this little disagreement among the researchers?
S Her extraordinary life has made people wonder how long humans can possibly live.

Recent research suggests that if an argument gets resolved, the emotional response tied to
it is significantly reduced or almost completely erased. Thus,it may be worth bringing up
issues with your friends, family members,or classmates rather than holding them back.
There is a difference between arguing and fighting.Arguing is that you and your opponent
present your concerns and discuss the feelings and issues related to those concerns. You can
engage in an argument respectfully without stirring up (anger.Fighting, however,
usually involves personal attacks, raising of voices, and storming out.Discussing your issues
and resolving them instead of stuffing them down can improve your emotional health In.a
study,2,000 people were asked to record their feelings and experiences for eight days in a
row. When people had an argument that they considered resolved, they had half the reactivity
(情绪反应)of those who avoided an argument.Reactivity is an increase in negative
emotions or a decrease in positive emotions. In other words, resolving an argument cuts your
negative feelings by half. One day later, people who had a resolved argument reported no
increase of negative emotions compared with those who avoided an argument. This means that
resolving an argument can feel like you have reached a state of resolution-and you are less
likely to be annoyed.
第1页共2页
Moreover, the older you are,the more likely you will come to a resolution after an
argument. This may be because morc life cxpcricnce usually leads to more defined
priorities. You are more likely to distinguish between what matters and what does not.
It is easier to avoid a discussion, but risking talking about it may eventually lead to a
better outcome.
40.According to this passage, what is arguing?
41.Why is it that"the older you are,the more likely you will come to a resolution after an
argument"?
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and
explain why.
Resolving arguments can improve your emotional health, because it increases your
reactivity and reduces the chance of you getting angry.
43.In addition to improving emotional health, what do you think are some other benefits
of resolving an argument?(In about 40 words)
