When people ask about my experience of learning Cantonese,I recount a journey driven by
unending curiosity and a strong desire to connect with a dynamic culture.
Growing up in a Russian family,my fascination with languages grew thanks to my father,a

language expert. It's during a cultural appreciation class in junior high that I was first introduced
to the world of Hong Kong films, famous for their characteristic action-packed dramas and
storytelling styles. However, what really amazed me was the uniqueness of the language,
Cantonese, which sparked an urgent need within me to explore it and the rich culture behind. This
marked the beginning of a thrilling linguistic journey.
Learning Cantonese posed challenges, such as unfamiliar characters, complex tones, and
different grammar structures, yet I persevered.Immersed in textbooks and available online courses,
I practiced the tones everyday until my pronunciation flowed naturally:Cantonese dramas and
music also played a role in familiarizing me with its rhythm.
To truly grasp the essence of Cantonese,I knew that studying alone wasn't enough-I
needed firsthand experience. So,I took a gap year to pack my bags for Hong Kong,a city
featuring the lively heartbeat of Cantonese culture.Buried in its busy streets and daily
conversations, from casual chats to food ordering,I found myself enveloped in a linguistic
wonderland.Within a few months,my Cantonese proficiency flourished,fueling a surge of
confidence.
My explorations extended beyond the streets.I enrolled in formal language classes that
offered professional guidance.Through hard work,I successfully completed all the courses in
Cantonese Linguistics. From then on,I've been passionately committed to spreading the
Cantonese culture, ensuring its richness reaches a wider audience.
Today,I continue my Cantonese voyage with unflagging enthusiasm. It has transformed into
more than just a linguistic pursuit;it grants me a passport to sincere connections, profound
insights, and heartfelt admiration for its one-of-a-kind culture.

期高二期末考试英语试卷一2
C
Fashion designers have a big say in what's considered beautiful. They pick who's in their
shows and ads, shaping what's celebrated as beauty. But this power also means responsibility-it
can be used to leave people out or lift them up.
When I was young, fashion was my world.I pored over various fashion magazines at my
local bookstore, desiring to be tall, thin, and have long, shiny hair to fit the ideal.I wanted to be
like those models,so I stopped eating.It was a tough time;my eating disorder consumed me.It
took years to break free from its control, allowing me to focus on my true passions.
For so long, the fashion industry has worked hard to set an ideal of beauty that celebrates thin,
young, white, and able-bodied models as the ideal. It's impossible not to be exposed to images of
models that have been photoshopped to where there's not a single spot in sight. This idea is
everywhere, and it hurts people.Shockingly, around 91%of women are unhappy with their
appearance. It's sad that teens grow up in a society where they deny themselves.
There's progress-models and musicians promote body positivity. However, the pressure to
meet unrealistic standards remains.Changing these standards involves bravely celebrating diverse
beauty.True inclusivity goes beyond appearances. It requires diverse decision-makers,
photographers, and casting directors cooperating.Young designers often overlook this crucial
aspect.Hiring plus-size or transgender photographers,diverse casting directors,or makeup artists
who understand the importance of accommodating to various skin tones,is vital for an overall
approach.
We aimed to redefine the "bikini body"standards. However, the goal isn't for the consumer's
body to change but for clothes to accommodate all sizes. We need more fashion for everyone,no
matter their size or where they shop. It's our responsibility as designers to challenge this narrow
beauty definition. My hope is for future teens to escape the pressures I faced, developing a fashion
industry celebrating diverse identities.
28.What does the underlined phrase"pored over"in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Read attentively.
B.Classified carefully.
C.Recommended sincerely.
D.Compared thoroughly.
29.What is the impact of the initial beauty ideals set by the fashion industry?
A.Generating individuality
B.Contributing to self-confidence.
C.Causing self-denial.
D.Focusing on true passions.
30.What can be inferred about true inclusivity?
A.It calls for diversity and cooperation.
B.It focuses on physical appearances.
C.It encourages personal effort.
D.It satisfies traditional standards.
31.Which of the following will the author probably agree with?
A."Bikini body"standards should be strengthened.
B.Customers will change their body shapes.
C.Fashion should celebrate everyone's uniqueness.
D.Future teens will redefine fashion standards.

When you're feeling low or even a little depressed, what do you want to do?The answer for
most of us is not very much. Our natural response to a bad mood is to rest with our comfort of
choice and hibernate(蛰伏)alot.
But according to new science, the best way to fight off the depression is to force yourself to
get out there and do something new.You might have to drag yourself off the sofa, but this research
shows you'll be happier for the effort.
For the study, the research followed the daily movements of 122 study subjects, using the
location-tracking features of their phones for three to four months. They also sent subjects regular
text messages asking them to report on their mood.
The scientists discovered the more people visited new and different locations, the happier
they felt both that day and the next.Variety and novelty seem to lift our mood."We also find that
if we feel better today,we're likely to move around and have more novel experiences and have
more experiential diversity the following day,"study co-author and NYU psychology professor
Catherine Hartley said.
"These results suggest a reciprocal link between the novel and diverse experiences we have
during our daily exploration of our physical environments and our subjective sense of well-being,"
Hartley commented.
This isn't the first time science has linked new experiences with positive brain benefits.
Previous studies have shown that new and challenging experiences light up learning centres in the
brain.Just as experience has probably taught you,you learn a lot faster when you get outside your
comfort zone.If you've been stuck at home a lot lately,it's no shock that you feel lazy.Your brain
is missing out on the novelty and exploration it desires. The good news is,if you can force
yourself to do something new, you'll feel you can grow smarter.
32.According to new science, what should we do to lift our spirits?
A.Stay in the comfort zone.
B.Have a complete rest.
C.Choose to enjoy our hobbies.
D.Explore the outside world.
33.How did the researchers conduct the study?
A.By phoning the subjects.
B.By tracking the subjects'movements and moods.
C.By analysing the subjects'locations.
D.By referring to previous relevant studies.
34."A reciprocal link"in paragraph 5 means a link that proves
A.strong but temporary
B.weak and indirect
C.suitable for each other
D.beneficial to each other
35.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Novelty improves learning effectiveness.
B.It's harmful to get stuck at home too long.
C.Your brain desires novelty and exploration.
D.Exploration is linked with positive emotions.

第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
When you get in a car,you expect it will have functioning brakes,When you pick up
medicine at the drugstore, you expect it won't be polluted. But it wasn't always like this. The
safety of these products was terrible when they first came to market,It took much research and
regulation to figure out how users can enjoy the benefits of these products without getting harmed.
36
Social media risks are everywhere. The dangers that algorithms designed to maximize
attention represent to teens have become impossible to ignore.Other product design elements,
often called"dark patterns,"designed to keep people using for longer, also appear to tip young
users into social media overuse.3.7 They say it's their users'fault for engaging with harmful
content in the first place, even if those users are children or the content is financial trickery. They
also claim to be defending free speech.
38 Under the Digital Services Act,which came into effect in Europe in 2022,platforms
are required to take action to stop the spread of illegal content and can be fined up to 6 percent of
their global incomes if they don't do so.If this law is enforced, maintaining the safety of their
algorithms and networks will be the most financially sound decision for platforms to make.
Despite these efforts, two things are clear.First, online safety problems are leading to real,
offline suffering.Second, social media companies can't,or won't,solve these safety problems on
their own.39 Even safety issues like cyberbullying that we thought were solved can pop right
back up.As our society moves online to an ever-greater degree, the idea that anyone, even teens.
can just "stay off social media"becomes less and less realistic.40
A.Platforms already have systems to remove violent or harmful content.
B.And those problems aren't going away.
C.Similarly, social media needs product safety standards to keep users safe.
D.The current issues aren't really about offline suffering
E.Online platforms, however, have shifted blame on the consumers whenever criticized.
F.Some authorities are taking steps to hold social media platforms responsible for the content.
G.It's time we should require social media to take safety seriously, for everyone's sake.

I applied for a job with a Chinese-Canadian company in Vancouver.As you know,the
Chinese are famous for their food. They cook delicious food and obtain a simple pleasure from
eating.
So,I was not surprised when my new boss invited me out to lunch to celebrate my new job.
He said we were going to eat in a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown.I was nervous.I knew we
would be using chopsticks, and while I had tried many times to master the technique,I had
completely failed in every attempt. How would I be able to make a good impression?Would I
make a complete fool of myself?
That evening.I called a friend and asked her to explain exactly how to use chopsticks. She
patiently explained the proper way of holding them between the thumb, first and middle
fingers..“It is not that hard,.”she said.“That is easy for you to say,”I replied.“You've been eating
with chopsticks all your life.It is natural for you!"I didn't get much sleep that evening.I kept
turning around in bed all night, worrying about lunch the next day.
The next day,I could hardly contain my anxiety. It was difficult to get any work done in the
morning. At noon,I left with my boss and two co-workers and headed to the restaurant. We were
seated at an excellent table. My boss wrote out the food order, speaking to the server in Chinese.
My heart was pounding, but then I noticed a strange thing.Instead of the customary chopsticks,
each of us had knives, forks, and spoons.
I was confused at first, but then,it hit me.My boss knew that I would have trouble with the
chopsticks. He wanted to save me from embarrassment,so he had called ahead and arranged for us
to be served with knives and forks.I couldn't believe how kind and helpful he was.

Make Proper Use of Dictionary Pens
Nowadays, using dictionary pens to look up new words is widely common among
students
Undoubtedly, dictionary pens offer great convenience. With a simple scan,
students can instantly get the meaning, pronunciation, and example sentences of an
unfamiliar word, which greatly improves reading efficiency.
However,over-reliance on such tools may weaken our ability to guess word
meanings from context. Some students tend to scan every new word immediately
rather than think independently, which hinders the development of deep thinking
skills.
In my view, dictionary pens are useful aids, but they should not replace active
thinking.I suggest using them only when necessary, while trying to infer meanings
from the passage first.Only in this way can we make proper use of them and truly
improve our language ability.
读后续写
Instantly,I made up my mind and asked the server to bring me a pair of chopsticks. My boss looked
at me in surprise, and I told him I wanted to practice using them.I took a deep breath, held the
chopsticks the way my friend had taught me,and tried to pick up a piece of food.At first,my hands
shook a little, and the food slipped a few times, but I kept trying. My boss smiled and encouraged
me,saying it was the effort that counted. My co-workers also gave me warm words of support.
In the end,I wasn't embarrassed at all.Even though I didn't use the chopsticks perfectly,I felt
proud of myself for facing my fear instead of avoiding it.My boss praised me for my courage, and
the lunch turned out to be a great chance to connect with everyone. This experience taught me that
being open to learning and stepping out of my comfort zone could turn a stressful situation into a
positive one.
