On 1st August 2024, Yang Jiayu won a gold medal in the women’s 20 km race walk in Paris. She ran 20 kilometres very fast and finished in 1 hour 25 minutes 54 seconds.1 This was a special day because it was Army Day, and Yang Jiayu used to be a soldier (军人). She won the 11th gold medal for China at the Olympics, and it was the first one in running and walking events.
Yang Jiayu, Ma Zhenxia, and Liu Hong were in the Chinese team. From the start, they ran very well. Yang Jiayu was the fastest and stayed ahead of the other runners. She was very good at keeping her lead even when other runners tried to catch up. She won the race and got the gold medal.
Yang Jiayu is from Inner Mongolia. When she was 14, she did well in a school race and started her race walking career. She trained hard and was very talented (有才能的). She faced some difficult times, like not getting to race in the 2016 Rio Olympics2 and getting a penalty (处罚) in the 2021 Olympics. But she never gave up and kept working hard.
Yang Jiayu is famous for being both pretty and strong. She makes short videos and some people call her “the beautiful race walker”. But she says she wants her achievements to be beautiful, not just her looks. She showed her hard work and talent by winning gold in Paris.3 Now, she and Liu Hong will race in a new event, and we hope they do well for China.

Long long ago, there once lived a very lazy farmer. “Working hard is for the fool!” he would say.
When the farmer didn’t want to do work in the fields, he asked his wife and son to work for him! And the “clever” farmer would sit, waiting for them! His wife and son weren’t happy, but they had to do the work.
Later, the farmer’s son noticed some holes (洞) in the walls of the house. He asked his father to fix them so the mice couldn’t get in, or would eat the grain (谷物)!5 The farmer just shook his head. Then, he put a cat in the house at night, and all the mice ran away.6 “How clever I am!” he said. “I get to have a good sleep when that silly cat works for me!”
When the market day came, the farmer had to take bags of grain to the town for sale because his wife and son were busy. He let his horses pull the wagon. The horses were doing all the work when he had a rest. This made him quite happy.
However, he was so careless that the wagon fell down a hole suddenly and it couldn’t move! “Silly horses!” the farmer shouted. And then, he saw somebody coming. It was Hercules, the strongest man in the world! The farmer was excited and asked Hercules to push the wagon out of the hole for him.
Hercules smiled, “Did you try to get it out yourself?” The farmer said no.
“Why should I help you if you won’t try even once by yourself?” asked Hercules. The farmer did not know what to say, so he tried hard to push the wagon.7 Finally, he made it.
Hercules taught the farmer an important lesson.
