They usually hold a sign or a balloon with the time. The time is about when they’re trying to finish the race.1  There are usually between 10 and 15 pacers in a marathon.2 Each of them leads a different pace group. For example, a smaller marathon might have pace groups every 15 minutes. A larger marathon might have pace groups every 5 minutes.   There are many reasons to run with a pacer. First of all, they can help you run at the right pace.3 If you go out too fast in the first half of the race, you will run out of energy (能量) quickly and slow down. If you set out to run slowly first, it can be hard to pick up the pace in the end. With a pacer, you don’t have to think too hard about your pace.
