As we all know, there is a serious shortage of water in many parts of Africa. However, there is a magical tree which can help to solve the water problem. It is called the “sacred(神圣的)tree of Africa”—baobab tree(猴面包树).
A baobab tree is huge like an upside-down carrot. It can grow so large that it needs more than 40 people holding hands to circle it. Actually, most baobab trees are not very tall, only about ten meters.
A baobab tree is valuable. It is said that if everyone in Africa had a 10-meter-tall baobab tree, it would solve more than 50% of their food problems. In hot Africa, water is the most needed. When the rainy season comes, the baobab tree starts to hold water in its body. The baobab tree is said to be the most water-holding tree. It can hold thousands of kilograms of water in its body. Local people usually cut a hole in the tree with a knife and get clean water from it. The baobab tree leaves are a bit like spinach(菠菜)leaves. True to its Chinese name, the fruit of the baobab tree tastes like bread. But it’s not like bread with cream. It tastes dry. Local people seldom get stomach problems because of eating it.

Studies (研究) show that human beings and cats have been living together for about 9,500 years.
As cat owners know well, cats do not follow humans in the same way as dogs do. Dogs are usually trained to do what people want them to do. In fact, some scientists say that cats have trained us to take care of them. As a result, many people have come to think that maybe cats do not understand human language.
A report in the scientific journal (杂志) Nature shows that cats understand human beings well enough to recognize their own names.
The report describes (描述) experiments (实验) with house cats in Japan. During the tests, people say four words that were similar to a cat’s name. The cats seemed to lose interest after the speaker said a few of the words. Then the person said the cat’s name. The cats moved their ears or turned their heads when they heard their names. They also moved their feet or bodies very little—not a surprising result.
Another finding was that a cat will give an answer when a person who is not its owner says its name. The study was carried out by four more researchers (研究者).
“I think many cat owners feel that cats know their names, or the word ‘food’, but until now, there was no scientific evidence to support the result,” says Saito, who is a cat owner.
The researchers hope that the findings from their study will help both cats and people. They added that perhaps cats can learn words to warn (警告) them of dangerous things or places.
36. From paragraph 2, we know that ________.
A. dogs are cleverer than cats B. cats do more for humans
C. people like dogs better D. it’s not easy to train a cat
37. The report in Nature describes experiments to show that ________.
A. cats may understand human language B. dogs have trained humans to take care of them
C. dogs follow humans better than cats D. cats seem to have no interest in their names
38. When a stranger (陌生人) says its name, a cat will ________.
A. move parts of its body B. answer the questions
C. understand the words D. turn to its owner
39. What does the underlined word “evidence” in paragraph 6 probably mean in Chinese?
A. 途径 B. 成就 C. 辩论 D. 证据
40. The text is mainly developed by ________.
A. showing numbers B. following the time order
C. listing facts D. offering suggestions
(D)
Plastic is everywhere. From the food we eat to the air we breathe, tiny particles (微粒) of plastic—also known as “microplastic”—can be found in almost anything. Researchers have questioned whether taking microplastic can negatively influence our health, especially if there are pieces of plastic you’re using almost every day, like your plastic cutting board.
A study that was published recently examined the amount of microplastic found in food after using two different types of plastic cutting boards. Researchers cut up carrots on these plastic-cutting boards and found they resulted in 1,114 microplastic particles (pieces of plastic less than 5 millimeters long) on the carrots each time the board was used. This means a plastic cutting board could produce 15 milligrams of microplastic per cut, and around 50 grams a year—the same amount as 10 plastic credit cards.
__________ At first, the studies about ingesting microplastics seem disturbing. Evidence suggests that microplastic can be found in our blood, our lungs, and even our placenta (胎盘), and can be harmful to our physical health. However, it’s important to note that the science is still new and very limited (有限的). Dr. LeBeau points out that while the recent study examining cutting boards does provide evidence of plastic particles in food, it does not make any claims (声明) towards the negative effects these cutting boards can have on human health. It is unclear if they are a human health risk to consumers.
Also, studies on microplastic and health problems have only suggested a possible link. They don’t say for sure because it is still hard to prove a direct cause.
41. What are microplastics?
A. Large plastic items we use daily.
B. Plastic that is safe for health.
C. Plastic used only for cutting boards.
D. Tiny particles of plastic found in many things.
42. How many grams of microplastic can a plastic cutting board produce in one year?
A. 10 grams. B. 15 grams. C. 50 grams. D. 1,114 grams.
43. Choose the best sentence to fill in the blank “________” in Paragraph 3.
A. What should we do with microplastic?
B. Should people make use of microplastic?
C. With so much microplastic in our food, can we avoid microplastic?
D. With so much microplastic in our food, should people be worried?
44. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce microplastic.
B. To explain how to protect ourselves.
C. To ask us not to use plastic products.
D. To show us the relationship between microplastic and humans.
45. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Reducing Plastic Use B. Tiny Plastics, Big Problems

A. dogs are cleverer than cats B. cats do more for humans

根据图片和提示词“it, important”可知,本句要表达“节约用水很重要”。本句使用了“It is+形容词+to do sth.”句型,It作形式主语,真正的主语是后面的不定式短语“to save water”。当不定式、动名词或从句作主语时,为避免头重脚轻,常用it作形式主语放在句首。故填It is important to save water.
Don’t spit in public./We shouldn’t spit in public.
