(B) Discovering the Beauty of Science Tom was a curious middle school student who had a great passion for science. To him, science was not just a subject in books, but a key to opening the secrets of nature.   One spring, Tom decided to plant some cherry tomatoes ( 圣女果) in his garden. He took care of them carefully, watering them every day and making sure they got enough sunlight. However, after a few weeks, he noticed a strange thing. Although all the plants were of the same age and grew in the same soil, three of them grew much slower and their leaves turned yellow.   Instead of giving up, Tom’s scientific mind started working. He wondered, “What is causing this difference?” He did some online research first and read articles about plant nutrition (营养). He guessed that the yellow-leaved plants might be lacking(缺乏)a special  mineral called “magnesium” ( 镁).   To test his idea, Tom set up a controlled experiment (对照实验). He chose two of the yellow-leaved plants that were almost the same size. He labeled them Plant A and Plant B. He kept all the conditions the same—the same amount of water, sunlight, and temperature. The only difference was that he watered Plant A with a  mixture of water and  magnesium salts, while Plant B only received normal water.   Day after day, Tom carefully measured(测量)their heights and recorded the changes in a notebook. In the first week, nothing seemed to change. But Tom didn’t lose heart. He knew that scientific research required patience. By the end of the second week, a miracle happened. The leaves of Plant A began to turn green, and it grew 5 centimeters taller! Meanwhile, Plant B remained yellow and short.   Tom was thrilled(激动的). Through this simple practice, he not only solved his gardening problem but also understood the beauty of the scientific method. He realized that science is about asking questions, making guesses, and finding answers through careful tests. ( )6.What did Tom notice when he was taking care of the cherry tomatoes? A. All the plants grew well. B. Some plants grew slower and had yellow leaves. C. The plants needed more sunlight. D. The plants were attacked by pests. ( )7.Why did Tom set up a controlled experiment? A. To see if the plants liked magnesium salts. B. To prove that his guess about magnesium was right. C. To find out the best amount of water for the plants. D. To compare the growth rate of different plants. ( )8.The underlined word “miracle” in the passage probably means ____. A. a common thing B. an unexpected good thing C. a bad result D. a sad event ( )9.What can we infer from the passage? A. Tom didn't like science at first. B. Tom gave up easily when facing problems. C. Tom learned a lot from his experiment. D. Tom's experiment was a failure. ( )10.What is the main idea of the passage? A. Students can learn to protect nature by planting cherry tomatoes. B. Finding answers to life’s problems requires a scientific attitude and action. C. Plant growth is mainly affected by soil nutrition rather than water or sunlight. D. We should always believe our first guesses when we do scientific research. (C) Many teenagers spend their weekends playing video games or sleeping in. However, 13-year-old Toby chooses a different path. He is the leader of “Green Streets,” a student volunteer group in his neighborhood. Toby’s journey began last winter. On a snowy morning, he noticed his elderly neighbor, Mrs. Smith, struggling to carry a heavy box of old newspapers to the recycling center. Toby hurried over to help her. During their short walk, Mrs. Smith shared that many seniors(老年人)in the community lived alone and found it difficult to handle physical tasks like cleaning yards or fixing broken fences. These words stayed in Toby's mind. “We are young and full of energy. Why don't we do something meaningful for our community?” he wondered. He shared his idea with his classmates, and five of them immediately agreed to join him. Together, they started “Green Streets.” Now, every Saturday morning, the group gathers at the community square. Their tasks vary (变化)from week to week. Some members help clean up local parks and paint over old walls. Others visit the elderly to carry heavy groceries(食品杂货)or even teach them how to use smartphones. “My grandmother can now make video calls to her friends, thanks to these kids,” said a local resident. However, it wasn't always easy. In the beginning, some people doubted their persistence. “They are just kids. They will probably give up after a few weeks,” a man remarked. Toby and his team faced challenges like bad weather and a lack of tools, but they never stopped. Today, “Green Streets” has grown from a small group of five to a large team of over forty members. “It’s not just about doing chores(家务琐事‌),” Toby explains. “It’s about recognizing our responsibility as members of this community. We should take care of where we live.” Through this experience, Toby has not only improved his communication and problem-solving skills but also realized the value of helping. As Mrs. Smith put it, “These young people have brought hope and energy back to our neighborhood. They show us what true responsibility looks like.” ( )11.What made Toby decide to start “Green Streets”? A. His school asked him to lead a volunteer group. B. He wanted to learn how to repair broken fences. C. He wanted to make money by recycling newspapers. D. He realized the difficulties of seniors in his neighborhood. ( )12.Based on the passage, which of the following is most likely to be a new activity for “Green Streets”? A. Starting an online club to play video games with teenagers. B. Helping an elderly couple carry heavy bags of soil for their garden. C. Painting the walls of their own bedrooms with bright colors. D. Buying expensive tools to build a private park for themselves. ( )13.What can we learn about Toby and his team from Paragraph 5? A. They gave up easily when they had no tools. B. They cared a lot about what the man remarked. C. They were determined(坚定的)to keep their promise. D. They grew because they only worked in good weather. ( )14.Which of the following is Toby's main belief(信念‌)about community service? A. Doing chores is the best way for teenagers to spend weekends. B. Every member of a community has a duty to make it better. C. Teenagers should only help people who are rich. D. Communication skills are more important than helping others. ( )15.What is the best title for the passage? A. A Snowy Morning with Mrs. Smith B. Green Streets: Teens Showing Responsibility C. While passive reading is easy, it does not help you understand deeply. To truly understand a topic well and become creative, we must follow the path of active learning, which consists of three key steps. Step 1: Exploration. You start by exploring a topic. Instead of reading only one book, you gather different sources under one specific theme. By comparing different views, you get a broad and unbiased understanding of the world. Step 2: Reflection. After exploration, you need to digest(消化)the information. You think about how the new knowledge fits in with what you already know. You must ask yourself: “How does this connect to my past experience?” This helps you find the “holes” in your mind. Step 3: Application. This is the key to innovation(创新). You take what you have learned and apply it to real-life situations. For example, if you learn about plants in science class, you can grow them in your garden to test your ideas and create new solutions(解决方案). In short, active learning is not just about schoolwork. It is about developing critical thinking(批判性思维)and creativity(创造力)for your future. By moving from passive reading to active exploration, reflection, and application, you can truly live the knowledge you learn. ( )16.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Passive reading. B. A specific theme. C. The new knowledge explored. D. Real-life situations. ( )17.What is the main difference between passive reading and active learning according to the passage? A. Passive reading is a “two-way conversation” while active learning is not. B. Active learning requires more interaction, such as asking questions and applying ideas. C. Passive reading is better for understanding complex science topics deeply. D. Active learning is mainly about memorizing facts from many different books. ( )18.According to Paragraph 4, which of the following is an example of “Application” ? A. Reading three different science books to find out how flowers grow. B. Thinking quietly about whether a writer's ideas about plants are correct. C. Memorizing the names of all the flowers in a local park for a test. D. Testing a new way of watering to see if your garden flowers grow faster. ( )19.What can be inferred from the passage? A. Moving beyond just reading is necessary for developing creativity. B. Active learners usually spend most of their time growing plants in gardens. C. Passive reading will be completely replaced by digital social media. D. You can only become an active learner by reading science articles. ( )20.Which of the following diagrams best shows the structure of this passage? A. B. C. D. 第二节 Complete the Passage(本题 5 小题, 每小题 1 分, 共 5 分) Choose the sentences to complete the passage. Responsibility of Keeping Pets More and more people choose to keep pets like dogs or cats as their family members. While pets bring joy and friendship, they also bring a lot of responsibilities. Keeping a pet is not just for fun. (21) First of all, providing basic needs is the most important responsibility. Owners must ensure that their pets have enough food and fresh water every day. Besides, a clean and safe living environment is necessary. (22) For example, dogs need regular walks to stay healthy, and cats need a clean box for their waste. Not taking care of these basic needs can lead to health problems for animals. Secondly, health care is a key part of being a responsible owner. Pets, like humans, can get sick or injured. (23) Regular check-ups with a vet and necessary shots are important to prevent diseases. Responsible owners should also pay attention to their pets' behavior. A sudden change in behavior often means the animal is not feeling well. Furthermore, training and getting along with others are often not noticed but very important. A well-trained pet is easier to live with and safer for the community. Owners should spend time teaching their pets basic commands. (24) This process also helps build a deep relationship between the owner and the pet. Finally, the most important responsibility is love and time. Pets are beings that have feelings and need attention and care. They should not be left behind when they grow old or when the owner becomes busy. (25) In conclusion, keeping a pet is a serious decision. It teaches us about love, patience, and most importantly, how to be a responsible person. A. They should also learn how to interact with other people and animals. B. It is a long-term promise that requires a strong sense of responsibility. C. Taking care of a pet until the end of its life is the ultimate sign of duty. D. You should choose a pet that fits your lifestyle perfectly. E. Different pets require different kinds of living spaces and care. F. Keeping them healthy is a task that no owner should ignore(忽视‌). G. People keep pets because they feel lonely when they live alone. 21.______ 22.______ 23.______ 24.______ 25.______ 第三节 Cloze Test(本题10小题,每小题1分,共10分) Choose the best answer to complete the passage. It was not just a path for trading goods but also a bridge for cultural exchange. Scientists believe that people started to travel along the Silk Road around 3,000 years ago. As time went by, when the Chinese silk trade became highly significant globally, the Silk Road had extended to nearly 6,500 kilometres, stretching from China to Rome, spanning from the Far East to the West. Businessmen on the Silk Road carried a wide variety of items. They transported silk, which was highly prized in the West. Besides silk, they also traded spices, cloth, valuable stones, and gold. These goods not only represented economic value but also cultural characteristics of different regions. In the past, camels and horses were the main means of transportation on the Silk Road. However, today, the old routes are still in use, but trains have replaced them. There is a Silk Route Museum in Jiuquan, China. It houses over 35,000 objects from all along the Silk Road. These objects are like time-capsules, preserving the history and cultures of many countries and peoples. Through the Silk Road, different civilizations met, interacted, and influenced each other, leaving a rich heritage for future generations. 56. The Silk Road connected Europe, Africa and ______ and was a bridge for ______ exchange. 57. Among the various items, _______ was the most famous product from the _______ East. 58. Welcome to China! I am so happy to see your post. Traditional Chinese festivals are really amazing, and my favourite one is the Spring Festival. The Spring Festival is a celebration for family reunions. It usually takes place in January or February. It means a happy break from work for everyone. The best part of the festival is the big family dinner. Eating dumplings is a must for us! Before the dinner, we hang balloons and lanterns in the dining room to make it look beautiful. I often help my mum cook, but I never forget to clean the room first. We enjoy the time together and laugh a lot.I I feel like it is the best time of the year. It is truly an amazing festival! 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
