【原文】 M: Last winter, our city had the heaviest snow in over 50 years. Roads were blocked and public transport stopped running, causing many people to be trapped at the train station. A group of high school students, including myself, decided to help. We carried hot tea, bread, and blankets to the station. I still remember an old lady who had been waiting for more than 12 hours. She had lost her luggage in all the confusion and was growing increasingly anxious. When I gave her tea and a warm blanket, her eyes were filled with tears. Later, we even helped everyone get settled in a nearby hotel that offered free accommodation. When I got home, I was cold and tired. However, that night, as I lay in my warm bed, I realized that being kind doesn’t require wealth or power. It only needs a willingness to act. Helping others creates a chain of warmth that spreads further than we could imagine.

Four European Cities to Visit This Summer
Why do people avoid European cities in summer? The reason is just one word: crowds. But some less famous cities offer great escapes without the queues. Here are four of them worth visiting this summer.
Toulouse, France
Seek out spotted light in Toulouse, also named the Pink City, as it blooms for summer. The Augustins Museum, a famous one in this city, has reopened after a six-year restoration, with its Gothic galleries revealed once more. The church next to it is due to follow in August, showing Renaissance art.
Bilbao, Spain
In Bilbao, as well as being awestruck by Frank Gehry’s sculptural Guggenheim Museum, architecture fans can also appreciate the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, which is set to reopen in August with a landmark contemporary extension and acres of new exhibition space.
Trieste, Italy
Start with the food: Zinzendorf Opicina brings restaurant, shop, pasta workshop, deli, cafe and snack bar together under one roof, showcasing the city’s border cuisine. Then dip into Trieste’s well-known coffee culture. Additionally, there is a wealth of culture, with recent additions including ITS Academy, Italy’s first museum dedicated to fashion, and LETS Trieste, a literature museum.
Gdansk, Poland
What attracts visitors most is the low cost of living in this Polish port city. Stuff your stomach on pierogi, a traditional Polish food, or have street food such as zapiekanka, the local take on pizza. On the coast, the sandy sweep of Brzezno beach is free to use, while summer brings a packed festival calendar. The Mystic Festival delivers a blast of metal and rock in June, followed by the Solidarity of Arts festival in August.

In July 2025, Rosie Paulik posted on TikTok about her father Buz Ecker, who had reached a point in his life where he was wondering how to comfort others through writing letters. She asked if people would like to receive a letter from her father. “He loves writing letters more than most people love their kids. ” Paulik added, “Are there any fathers who would like to join in, just like my father does?” To her surprise, hundreds of people responded.
Buz and other dads volunteering to join have spent hours writing to strangers who are looking for a pick-me-up, including many whose fathers have died. Paulik named the volunteer-run group the Dad Letter Project and started the website dadletterproject.com, which describes its mission this way: “Mail That’ll Make You Smile (or Cry, in a Good Way). ”
“It’s very delightful to write a letter to people who have never gotten a letter from a father. ” said Buz. He wakes up around 4:30 a.m. to write for about four hours each morning and tells stories about his parents and his grief when they died. But Buz also includes light anecdotes, like how his dogs, Pearl and Piper, love to escape and cover themselves in burrs and mud at a nearby river.
Amy Woods from England, trying to take her mind off the four-year anniversary of her father’s death, received a letter from Darren Timmeney, a father in Kalamazoo, Michigan. “As a dad, I am proud of you and think your wondering and thinking about your hippie artist dad is really special. ” said Timmeney. When seeing the lines, Woods cried at her kitchen table, saying it really reminded her of how much love she has for her dad.
So far, more than 4,500 letters have been sent out. Buz doesn’t know how much money he’s spent on postage and stationery for the project, saying the costs are less than the “satisfaction that people receive and that I receive out of writing the letters.”
24. Why did Paulik post on TikTok about Buz?
A. To show Buz’s talent in writing.
B. To assist Buz in starting a new cause.
C. To seek advice on Buz’s writing.
D. To celebrate Buz’s devotion in writing.

The popular belief holds that garlic has been considered a natural mosquito repellent for centuries. Its spicy smell drives away these insects. Now, that folk wisdom finally has a scientific explanation.
A team of researchers at Yale University firstly experimented with 43 fruits and vegetables, looking for natural substances that could affect how pest insects reproduce. They tested these foods on fruit flies, which usually mate on food. The researchers expected some foods might have an effect. But the result was surprising: garlic stopped the flies from mating and laying eggs — while none of the other 42 foods showed any clear effect.
To understand why, the team ran two separate experiments — one in which insects could only smell the garlic, and another in which they could both smell and taste it. The results were unambiguous: taste was undoubtedly the factor responsible for shutting down reproductive behavior, not scent.
A follow-up study looked deeper into the garlic and found the key substance: Diallyl Disulfide. This substance works on a sensor in the fly’s taste system called TrpA1. This sensor tells the fly to reject food that might be harmful. The study, published in Cell, showed that garlic activates a group of bitter-taste nerve cells. But the effect goes beyond just making the fly avoid the food. It also causes changes in several genes. One of these genes is linked to the feeling of fullness. This means that the garlic substance interferes with how the fly controls its appetite. The researchers concluded that this increased feeling of fullness seems to stop mating and egg-laying, mainly in female flies.
The experiments were then copied across other flying insect species. In every case, garlic proved effective at discouraging reproduction. The findings suggest that garlic could serve as a powerful pestiside.
28. What did the researchers find in their first experiment?
A. Natural substances could disrupt reproducing.
B. Most tested foods affected insect reproduction.
C. Fruit flies could be often seen on the tested food.
D. Garlic prevented flies from mating and laying eggs.
29. The underlined word “unambiguous” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. Clear. B. Reliable. C. Uncertain. D. Confusing.
30. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Applications in pest control.
B. Mechanism of garlic’s effect.
C. Examples of genetic changes.
D. Significance of these experiments.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of garlic?
A. Doubtful. B. Neutral. C. Optimistic. D. Cautious.
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. B 31. C

Last month, Sarah woke up feeling totally off. She glanced at her smartwatch — it showed poor sleep and a racing heart. Instantly, she reached out to her neurologist. That data helped the neurologist better understand her symptoms, which allowed for earlier and even better treatment. As Dr. Smita Patel explains, wearables can track sleep, circadian rhythm, and heart rate variability all of which strongly influence neurological function.
These devices don’t just track symptoms — they also encourage healthier behavior. Dr. Anup Patel notes that when patients see in real time how their heart beats wildly after drinking alcohol or their blood pressure rises after eating salty food, they are more motivated to adopt lifestyle changes like a heart-healthy diet or regular exercise. Wearables can also help personalize routines that protect brain health by combining sleep quality, physical activity, and stress data.
For people with epilepsy, they can be life-saving. Devices like the EpiMonitor and EpiWatch can detect a sudden attack with about 98% accuracy by sensing changes in sweat levels. When an attack is detected, the wearable alerts both the patient and their caregivers. According to Dr. Gregory Krauss, this reduces the risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, which often occurs when a person sleeps alone.
Beyond this, wearables can help detect falls, which are a higher risk for those with stroke or Parkinson’s disease, though accuracy is lower for wheelchair users. While wearables may help predict fall risk by measuring gait and balance, the evidence is still incomplete.
While wearables can be an important tool for managing neurological disorders. Dr. Anup Patel points out, “It’s easy to misunderstand and jump to conclusions about what the information shows you.” “You can’t be too cautious — always seek guidance from your neurologist” he added.
32. Why does the author mention Sarah’s story?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To describe a scene.
C. To illustrate a concept.
D. To explain a phenomenon.
33. What benefits can wearables bring to users?
A. They can prevent all types of epilepsy attacks.
B. They can drive people to adopt a better lifestyle.
C. They can improve the quality of sleep naturally.
D. They can help create a standardized health routine.
34. What can we know about wearables in fall detection?
A. They can prevent falls from happening.
B. They are extremely accurate for all users.
C. They aren’t equally effective for the disabled.
D. They can predict fall risk with solid evidence.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Detect and Treat: What Wearables Can Do?
B. Track and Warn: How Wearables Save Patients?
C. The Future of Smartwatches: Are They Always Right?
D. A Powerful Tool: Is It a Replacement for Your Doctor?
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. C 35. D

Ways to Complete a Book Every Week, Even With a Busy Life
Many people say they want to read more, but the same excuse keeps coming up: “I don’t have time.” It sounds true because life is busy. But in many cases, the problem is not lack of time. ____36____ Here is how to turn spare minutes into a simple reading routine that works.
Start with the time you already have.
A 250-page book can take about four hours to read, depending on the reader and the material. This means a person does not need a full day to finish a book. ____37____ For example, a reader can do 10 pages in the morning, 5 pages during lunch and another 10 or 15 pages at night. That way, the book no longer feels too big.
____38____
One of the easiest ways to read more is to connect it to a habit you already have. If you drink coffee every morning, read a few pages while it brews. If you eat lunch alone, keep your phone down and open a book. This makes reading less dramatic. It becomes part of your normal day, not another task fighting for attention.
Drop boring books without guilt.
____39____ Give a book about 50 pages. If it is not working, leave it. Reading should challenge you, but it should not feel like punishment. Life is too short to drag yourself through a book you hate just to prove a point.
Use audio when reading feels hard.
Audiobooks can help, especially for people with long commutes or busy schedules. You can listen while walking, cleaning, cooking or sitting in traffic. Some people even read the physical book and listen to the audio version at the same time. ____40____
A. Build reading around your routine.
B. Not every book deserves your time.
C. It is how the available time is used.

E. A book in your bag can change everything.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和给定段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had first started writing when I was around five. Tiny one-page stories, three-line poems, a whole book of jokes — my small fingers, full of enthusiasm, produced them all. My family was overjoyed at my interest in reading and writing.
Every time I read a good book, I’d try to write one of my own. But as a little girl, my stories always hit a dead end after two or three chapters. I just didn’t know how to keep going! I felt totally burned out. One day, my mom noticed I was struggling. Instead of pushing me to write a whole novel, she said, “Why not try short stories?” To cheer me up, she gave me a beautifully carved wooden box. Inside was a fountain pen with a fine nib. She told me, “Focus on what you pour into your words, not the results you chase. The true value lies in the story. ”
Following my mom’s advice for a while, I spent hours pouring my thoughts into short stories. I was so excited and couldn’t wait for others to see what I’d written. My family always cheered me on, but people outside our relatives didn’t seem all that interested. My dad looked for a good publisher. But back then, I was told that my writing was still way too childish to be printed. My dad comforted me and promised to try some new ways to help me. As weeks went by, there were no responses. My expectation slowly faded. I started to wonder if it was even worth it. Maybe I should just let my writing go.
And I did. For months, my notebook gathered dust. I stopped writing and was just in low spirits.
注意:(1) 续写词数应为 150 左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
Then one afternoon, my fingers brushed against something while cleaning my desk.

Excited by the progress, I devoted more to writing online.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
Then one afternoon, my fingers brushed against something while cleaning my desk. It was my fountain pen with its nib still gleaming. As I held it, Mom’s words echoed: “Focus on the content, not the outcome.” Inspired, I took a deep breath, sat down, and slowly poured myself into short stories again. Meanwhile, Dad kept searching for ways to publish my collection. Luckily, he spotted a post calling for short stories online and excitedly told me. Out of concern, I just polished my old ones and posted them. To my surprise, people read them and even gave me some likes.
Excited by the progress, I devoted more to writing online. I began truly learning to craft short stories, focusing on improving my writing skills and the value of the stories themselves. Each draft was polished repeatedly until it was no longer childish. I uploaded my new works. My efforts paid off — readers grew day by day, and so did my followers. At that point, I finally understood what my mom said: “Focus on the story itself, and the results will follow.”

21. Where can you appreciate the Gothic galleries?
A. In the Guggenheim Museum.
B. In the ITS Academy.
C. In the Augustins Museum.
D. In the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum.
22. What can visitors do in Gdansk?
A. Learn to cook a Polish food.
B. Walk on a fee-based beach.
C. Attend an arts festival in July.
D. Experience more with less money.
23. What do the four cities have in common?
A. Less crowded.
B. Diverse in food.
C. Rich in culture.
D. Famous in Europe.

25. What’s the mission of the Dad Letter Project?
A. Helping strangers pick up writing.
B. Attracting children to the website.
C. Letting strangers feel a father’s love.
D. Making volunteers love their fathers.
26. How did Darren Timmeney comfort Amy Woods?
A. By quoting a line from a letter
B. By talking about a special table.
C. By sharing an artist’s moving letter
D. By showing care and understanding.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Buz Ecker?
A. Strict and ambitious.
B. Considerate and devoted.
C. Humorous and caring.
D. Generous and stubborn.

C. Examples of genetic changes.
D. Significance of these experiments.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of garlic?
A. Doubtful. B. Neutral. C. Optimistic. D. Cautious.

D. Choose a book you are interested in.
E. A book in your bag can change everything.
F. It helps them focus better and finish faster.
G. One only needs to use small pockets of time well.
