A man chose not to tell his name after saving a woman and her child after they crashed into a Houston-area bayou (长沼) on New Year’s Day.
A 22-year-old mother and her 8-month-old baby are recovering after their car crashed into Dickinson Bayou Thursday night, according to officials. The accident happened around 9:40 p.m. as the woman was driving along FM 517.
Officials say the mother told first responders that she struck a road edge (边缘) on a bridge. Shocked and panicked, she lost control of her vehicle, crossed several lanes of traffic, and rushed into the bayou.
Officials say a homeless man who lives in a wooded area near the bayou witnessed the crash. Without thinking twice, he rowed his boat out to the vehicle and rescued both the mother and her baby, bringing them safely to shore. What could have been an abysmal result took a hopeful turn almost immediately. By the time they reached land, Dickinson police officers had arrived at the scene.
The Dickinson Volunteer Fire Department also responded and later used their boat to transport a tow truck driver out to the car so it could be removed from the water.
The mother and her baby were taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch in League City in case of serious injuries. Police later confirmed that both have since been released from the hospital and are expected to be okay. Investigators noted that neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the crash, and the baby was properly secured in a car seat at the time.
In a statement, the Dickinson Police Department thanked the Good Samaritan for his “quick and selfless actions”. The man, recognized as a hero by officials, chose to remain unnamed.
24. What caused the accident?
A. The road was too crowded.
B. The bridge suddenly fell down.
C. The driver hit something unexpectedly.
D. The driver failed to avoid another car.
25. What does the underlined word “abysmal” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Disappointing. B. Terrible. C. Fruitless. D. Dramatic.
26. What can be learned about the crash from the investigation?
A. Safety rules were largely followed. B. The mother was injured seriously.
C. The baby was not properly protected. D. Alcohol was involved in the accident.
27. Why is the rescuer described as a hero in the text?
A. He arrived before emergency services. B. He prevented further traffic accidents.
C. He helped police investigate the accident. D. He acted quickly without seeking recognition.
C 25. B 26. A 27. D

根据上文“Without thinking twice, he rowed his boat out to the vehicle and rescued both the mother and her baby, bringing them safely to shore.(他不假思索地划着小船驶向那辆车,救下了母亲和婴儿二人,并将他们平安送到岸边。)”
根据第六段“Investigators noted that neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the crash, and the baby was properly secured in a car seat at the time.(调查人员表示,酒精和毒品均未引发这起车祸,事发时婴儿也被妥善固定在儿童安全座椅内。)”
根据第四段“Without thinking twice, he rowed his boat out to the vehicle and rescued both the mother and her baby, bringing them safely to shore.(他不假思索地划船驶向那辆车,救下了那位母亲和她的孩子,将二人平安送到岸边。)”以及最后一段“In a statement, the Dickinson Police Department thanked the Good Samaritan for his “quick and selfless actions”. The man, recognized as a hero by officials, chose to remain unnamed.(迪金森警察局在一份声明中感谢这位见义勇为者“迅速且无私的举动”。这名被官方认定为英雄的男子选择匿名,不愿透露姓名。)”可知,他救人行动迅速且事后不求名利。

AI chatbots (聊天机器人) might be very smart. Many people are even using AI to identify their medical issues and help them decide when to see a doctor. Researchers say this can be a problem if the advice isn’t accurate. A new study, led by Oxford University, shows AI chatbots aren’t very useful when a real person is asking them for health advice.
The study included nearly 1,300 participants. Each was given fictional health problems, including a list of symptoms and a made-up medical history. For example, one person was told to pretend they had a painful headache. The participants were divided into two groups. One group could ask the AI chatbots to identify their illness and say whether they should take care of themselves at home, see a doctor, or call an ambulance. The other group was allowed to use Google searches to find out the same information. Real doctors then checked to see whether the volunteers had figured out what their “illness” was and what to do next.
The results of the study showed that the people who talked to the AI chatbot did the right thing less than half the time and that the AI correctly identified the problem about a third of the time. In fact, the study found that the AI’s advice was no better than simply using Google searches.
“AI isn’t ready to take on the role of a medical expert,” said Rebecca Payne, an author of the study. She said it can be dangerous to get health information from an AI program that could provide inaccurate information and also fail to recognize when a person needs urgent medical attention. “We hope this work will contribute to the improvement of safer and more useful AI systems,” said Andrew Bean, who led the study.

For the first time, renewable energy has replaced coal as the top source of electricity around the world, a new report says.
Renewable energy, like solar, wind and water, contributed 34.3% of all global electricity produced in the first half of 2025, while coal fell to 33.1%, the energy expert Ember found.
Developing countries like China took the lead in adding more renewable energy, Ember reported. Countries including Hungary and Pakistan set records in solar energy production, producing 20% or more of their electricity from solar power.
The report found that global CO₂ emissions fell slightly in the first half of the year as solar and wind power grew faster than demand and led to a small fall in fossil fuel (化石燃料) use.
While the world is seeing significant gains in making energy cleaner, increased demand leaves renewables struggling to meet consumer needs. “It’s a question of whether the wind and solar is able to keep pace with the demand growth. If wind and solar don’t grow fast enough, we have to keep running the gas and coal power plants,” said Daniel Cohan, a professor of environmental engineering. The tech race to add AI to daily life is partly responsible. “With the growth of data centers and other growth from industries and air conditioning, we’re starting to see electricity demand grow 3% per year, rather than be flat or 1%,” Cohan said.
While it is eventually cheaper and cleaner to rely on wind and the sun for power once the plants are running, Cohan said funding the infrastructure (设施) for renewables remains a challenge.
China and other countries have been able to succeed because they predicted a rising desire for renewable energy and spent big on it.
32. Which figures show the efforts made by developing countries in renewable energy growth?
A. 3%. B. 20%. C. 33.1%. D. 34.3%.
33. What is a challenge facing renewable energy according to Cohan?
A. Rising costs for production. B. Races for technology development.
C. Lack of support from developed countries. D. Mismatch between energy supply and demand.
34. How has China achieved its renewable energy success?
A. By taking early action. B. By closing coal plants.
C. By upgrading facilities. D. By introducing AI to daily life.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To compare different kinds of energy production.
B. To prove the importance of cutting down CO₂ emissions.
C. To present the progress and challenges of renewable energy.
D. To explain how fossil fuels are replaced by renewable energy.
B 33. D 34. A 35. C

I live in a fairly average town in Oxfordshire, and despite having friends and family nearby, I never felt as if I was properly a part of the community.
In my 30s, I got a dog, had children and started working from home. As a result, I spent a lot more time in my local area, but I still felt like an outsider. At this point in my life, where I was focused on building a family and setting down my own roots, this lack of connection still existed — until I started volunteering.
It started with the parent-teacher association (PTA). I thought people who got involved were a certain type of parent with a passion for clipboards and too much time on their hands. But when a friend mentioned the PTA at my children’s school needed volunteers for the summer fair, I decided to give it a go. I was tasked with running the glitter face-paint stall and spent a joyful couple of hours covered in sparkles. My technique was questionable, but I had lots of wonderful conversations and fun.
Since then, I have become a fully signed-up member of the PTA. The experience has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s completely changed my opinion about rolling up my sleeves and getting stuck in.
Everyone in our PTA has a job and volunteers around their work, life and family; it’s not the image of cliquey (小集团的) parents I expected. There’s no pressure, but there is the option to get involved when you can, in the ways that work for you.
Later, I heard a local parkrun event was coming up and needed extra help.

根据第三段中“My technique was questionable, but I had lots of wonderful conversations and fun.(我的技巧值得怀疑,但我有很多精彩的对话和乐趣)”可知,作者与他人愉快交谈。
根据第三段最后一句“My technique was questionable, but I had lots of wonderful conversations and fun.(我的技巧值得怀疑,但我有很多精彩的对话和乐趣)”可知,作者度过了美好的时光,have a wonderful time为固定搭配,意为“度过愉快时光”。
根据第四段中“Since then, I have become a fully signed-up member of the PTA.(从那时起,我就成为了PTA的正式会员)”可知,作者成为了一名正式的注册会员。
根据第五段中“There’s no pressure, but there is the option to get involved when you can, in the ways that work for you.(没有压力,但只要有可能,你可以选择以对你有效的方式参与其中)”可知,家长教师协会的成员在帮忙时没有压力,stress为名词“压力”,在句中作表语。
根据第五段中“There’s no pressure, but there is the option to get involved when you can, in the ways that work for you.(没有压力,但只要有可能,你可以选择以对你有效的方式参与其中)”可知,人们可以用适合自己的方式提供帮助。
根据第六段“Later, I heard a local parkrun event was coming up and needed extra help.(后来,我听说当地即将举办一场公园跑步活动,需要额外的帮助)”可知,当地公园跑步活动即将到来,需要帮助。
根据第二段中“At this point in my life, where I was focused on building a family and setting down my own roots, this lack of connection still existed — until I started volunteering.(在我生命的这个阶段,我专注于建立一个家庭并扎根于自己的根,这种缺乏联系的情况仍然存在——直到我开始做志愿者)”可知,在开始志愿服务之前,作者的生活重心是建立家庭和扎根社区。
根据第四段“Since then, I have become a fully signed-up member of the PTA. The experience has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s completely changed my opinion about rolling up my sleeves and getting stuck in.(从那时起,我就成为了PTA的正式会员。

Making Our School More Beautiful
Our school is a lovely place for us to study and grow up. However, I have noticed some small problems around our campus. Some students often leave rubbish on the grass, and a few classmates tend to damage public facilities casually, which affects our school’s overall beauty.
To make our school more beautiful, I have some suggestions. First, we should develop a good habit of protecting the environment and always keep the campus clean. Second, it is better for us to take good care of public equipment and green plants. Besides, holding more voluntary activities can encourage every student to contribute to a nicer campus.
Small actions can make a big difference. Let’s work together to create a more beautiful school.

28. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the study?
A. Its problems. B. Its purpose. C. Its background. D. Its process.
29. What did the study show?
A. AI chatbots performed poorly.
B. Patients prefer AI to real doctors.
C. Google searches are easier to use.
D. AI is used as much as Google searches.
30. What does Andrew Bean think of the study?
A. It needs to be improved.
B. It can drive the progress in AI.
C. It helps people avoid health risks.
D. It can reduce the use of AI for health.
31. What is the best title for this text?
A. A Great Future of Medical AI B. Reflections on Internet Doctors
C. Warning Against AI Health Advice D. The Popularity of AI Health Services
D
