On a rainy Saturday afternoon, Li Ming paid a visit to the city museum. Walking through quiet halls, he found an old worker carefully putting together broken clay bowls with something.
“These bowls are over 1,000 years old,” the worker explained, noticing Li Ming watching. “Farmers found them under their fields (田地) last spring. Broken, but still precious.”
“Why spend time fixing broken things?” Li Ming asked.
The worker handed him a small piece. “See these bright yellow lines?” he said when he pointed to where the pieces joined. “This is real gold. Long ago, people believed broken things could become even more beautiful.”
For the next hour, Li Ming helped clean the clay pieces. His hands shook as he tried to fit them together. The pieces kept falling apart. “This is too hard!” he said after many tries.
The worker smiled kindly. “Wait, and try slowly,” he said, guiding Li Ming’s hands. “The breaks show their history. We don’t hide them—we make them special.”
Slowly, piece by piece, they fixed a small bowl. “Remember,” the worker said as Li Ming left. “Nothing stays broken forever if we work with care.”
On his way home, Li Ming thought about his mother’s old blue coat. She made it more colorful than before. He finally understood—some things become better when we give them love and time.

How do we know the time? A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries, people have developed different ways of telling the time.
About 5,500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. It was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial (日晷) about 3,500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could let people know the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3,400 years ago.
Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows (流动) from one bottle to another. When the water reaches a certain level, it shows the hours. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time.
In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries it was developed. For example, springs (发条) were added around 1500.This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1927, the first quartz (石英) clock was developed. Clocks became cheaper to build. It’s also cheaper for common people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run business, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, came the digital clock. And nowadays satellites send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not being late for school or work.
41. What can we know about the water clock according to Paragraph 2?
A. It could work on cloudy days or at night.
B. It was smaller than the sun clock and sundial.
C. It could show the exact time for half a day.
42. When was the first quartz clock developed?
A. About 3,500 years ago. B. In 1927. C. In 1956.
43. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. How mechanical clocks were improved over centuries.
B. Why digital clocks are more popular than quartz clocks.
C. The development of clocks from the 13th century to now.
44. How is the passage mainly organized?
A. By introducing different people’s inventions.

The Fair, an online publishing company, has put 10000 books on the underground, planes and taxis to make people more interested in reading. This project is called “Mobook”.
“Mobook” gets its idea from “Books on the Underground” a community project in London. The purpose of “Books on the Underground” is to encourage people to read more. Zhang Wei, the CEO of The Fair also wanted to do something in China. He sent an e-mail to Ms Cordelia Oxley, the leader of “Books on the Underground”, describing his plan and explaining the rules of “Mobook”. The leader replied to him in just two hours, saying that she thought the idea was great and she would offer help if needed.
But “Mobook” project is a little different from that in London. It has its own online system.
People who want to donate (捐赠) books must give their information online. QR code stickers (二维码标签) are then sent to their addresses. The book owners should stick them on the books before donating books and readers can know where the books are with the help of QR codes.
