Dear Eric,
Thanks for your e-mail. Time flies, and I have grown up a lot. Comparing with the past, I have changed in appearance, personality, hobbies, and lifestyle.
The most important change is my personality. I used to be very shy and introverted. I remember when I was in Grade Seven, I was afraid to speak in front of the class. One day, our teacher asked me to give a presentation. I was so nervous that I almost cried. However, with the encouragement of my teacher and classmates, I managed to finish it. Since then, I started to gain confidence. I joined the school’s debate team and participated in various activities. Gradually, I became more outgoing and confident.
Now, I am not afraid to express myself in public. This change has made my life more colorful and meaningful.

When you were a little child, you depended on your parents a lot. They used to make decisions about everything for you because you weren’t old enough to take care of yourself and make careful decisions. For example, they choose the clothes you wear, the food you should have and the after-school classes you should take. Finally, however, you grow up and become a teenager. You begin to have your own ideas and opinions about life. You want to make your own decisions.
As you change and grow into this new person who makes your own decisions, your parents may have a difficult time getting used to that. They only see you as a child. In most families, this can cause lots of arguments between teenagers and parents. You want to cover your walls with posters, but your parents don’t understand why you don’t like your wallpaper anymore. Then you feel your parents don’t respect you and don’t allow you to do what you like, and your parents get angry because they disagree with your decisions. And some other things—like the kind of friends you have—can cause even bigger arguments, because your parents will always be ready to protect you and keep you safe, no matter how old you are.
However, the good news is that there will be fewer arguments as your parents are aware that you have grown up and should have your own ideas. Before you get on very well with each other again, communication between you and your parents is very important.

A. Parents always think that teenagers don’t respect them.

A. Warn. B. Request. C. Realize.
28. The writer suggests that teenagers should ________.
A. talk with their parents often B. agree with their parents’ ideas
C. learn to protect their parents

China has a long history of using incense (熏香). Chinese people love incense and know how to make it. Different kinds of Chinese herbal (药草的) medicines were chosen by ancient Chinese to make incense that could clean the air and keep the mind clear.
As early as the pre-Qin period, people burnt incense to wish for a better life. Later, it was found that incense could be used to keep away insects. Gradually, the ancient people began to use incense to eliminate (清除) foul gas (臭气) and avoid illness.

This is what Chinese people call “the duration of a stick of incense”. What’s more, incense in the shape of balls would be put in a special bag. Different smells of incense can work differently. When it is heated, the cloth covering this bag also smells fantastic.

In 2008, the Zigong Lantern Festival was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage(国家级非物质文化遗产), becoming a shining name card for Chinese culture to go out into the world.
“Making a huge lantern for exhibition requires 17 steps,” said Wan Songtao, an inheritor (传承人) of Zigong lantern-making. “Each step is finished by a team instead of only one maker.” Wan added. Since the age of 5, Laura Lee has had a strange habit—she collects cardboard toilet-paper rolls (厕所卷纸筒). She didn’t know this habit would become a recycling movement one day .
In 2018, Lee set up a goal to collect 1,000 kg of these rolls. She was then a 16-year-old student at Nanyang Girls’ High School in Singapore. As of February 2021, she collected 860 kg. She received an Ecofriend Award from the Singapore government.
Why did she choose toilet rolls? “They are convenient to collect and also one of the purest forms of waste to recycle because they are made of only one material,” Lee told Singapore Today. “It’s more difficult to recycle pens because they are made up of too many different materials like rubber casings (橡胶外壳), metals and plastics, which require more resources to separate (分离).”
Lee went into a partnership with the waste management firm Veolia. The firm gave her money for every kilogram of toilet rolls.
She organized “toilet roll challenges” in her school and worked with cleaners to collect used toilet rolls. She gave speeches about what she was doing at local schools. She also raises awareness (意识) about different social groups through her Instagram Live series, “On A Roll”.
One big challenge Lee faces is others doubting her because of her young age. “I always have to use my actions to prove that I’m passionate (有热情的) and know about this,” she said. She will donate the money collected to a social cause focused on community health.
