When Lambert began to lose his vision and slow down,it became clear he needed a safer place to
grow old.But Lambert couldn't simply be moved into any ordinary nursing home.He is,after all,a
critically endangered African penguin. So the New England Aquarium (in Boston created a
dedicated“geriatric(老年的)island''for him and six other elderly penguins.
What started as a lighthearted idea quickly became a serious plan."Honestly,it started off as a joke,"
said Eric Fox,a penguin keeper at the aquarium."But as we took a closer look at their age-related
challenges,we realized we needed to take action."
The new rocky island, set near the aquarium's entrance,is separated from the rest of the 38-penguin
colony so older birds don't have to compete with younger peers. It has gentler slopes,a carpeted path to
the water, and a platform that makes it easier for the penguins to hop out after swimming.Besides, there
are extra cameras allowing staff to keep a close eye on the senior birds, ensuring they get timely
checkups and care.
Lambert's new home reflects a growing challenge for zoos and aquariums worldwide:animals in
human care are living far longer than they would in the wild. Some of the aquarium's African penguins
have reached their 30s or even 40s-about twice the lifespan (of wild penguins in South Africa
and Namibia, where pollution and overfishing threaten survival."As we learned how long these animals
could live in a better environment,it became clear that our approach needed a shake-up,as well,"said
Fox.
Visitors have been flooding into the aquarium to see the elderly penguins navigate their
custom-built island.Among them was 69-year-old tourist Terri Blessman.Hearing about Lambert's age
and care, she said,"I can feel a deep sense of connection. All of us older people need extra care as we
get older."
24.Why was the "geriatric island"set up?
A.To attract more tourists to the aquarium
B.To better attend to senior endangered penguins.
C.To do research on penguins'age-related problems.
D.To stop the elder penguins hurting the younger ones.
25.Which aspect of the"geriatric island"does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.Its new challenges
B.Its customized design.
C.Its fast development.
D.Its effective management.
26.What does the underlined word"shake-up"mean in paragraph 4?
A.Change.
B.Reward.
C.Fund
D.Solution
27.What is Blessman's attitude to the"geriatric island"?
A.Doubtful.
B.Worried.
C.Approving.
D.Objective.

Students at a Beijing-based school recently took part in a special program that combined English
learning with traditional Chinese music.
Organized by the Affiliated High School of Peking University, the program had three main goals.
First, students learned about the history and playing techniques of the guqin,a traditional Chinese string
instrument. They then studied specialized vocabulary and translated texts related to the guqin into
English.Sharing and discussing what they had learned gave them the chance to use English in a practical
way.In addition, students took part in a range of joint activities with their international peers.
One of the program's highlights was the guqin piece Yang Guan San Die(《阳关三叠》).Guided by
their music teacher, students explored how the composition conveys the poetic beauty of Chinese culture
With support from their English teacher, they translated the Tang Dynasty poem A Farewell Song(
二使安西》)by Wang Wei,.from which Yang Guan San Die was adapted..This exercise encouraged them
to appreciate the poem from a bilingual(双语的)perspective..
This creative approach not only deepened students'understanding of China's musical heritage but
also strengthened their confidence and language skills to share their culture with the world.
The exchange activities further inspired the Chinese students to refine their public speaking and
performance abilities. For example, they showcased their talents before visiting peers from Washington,
US,delivering English presentations and performing the guqin.
"I still remember standing on stage before an international audience, playing the guqin and
introducing it in English,"said 16-year-old He Linxuan."Their curiosity-and the pride I felt while
sharing my culture -left a lasting impression on me."
These exchanges often spark long conversations and lasting friendships."Such experiences truly
reflect the broader mission of the course-to promote harmony and joyful connections across cultures,"
said Sun Yamei, the course's English teacher.
28.What can we learn about the program?
A.It involved Chinese high school students only.
B.It mainly focused on teaching students the guqin.
C.It asked students to translate various ancient poems.
D.It integrated practical English use with cultural learning.
29.What does paragraph 3 mainly show?
A.Why the program was set up.
B.Who the program was designed for.
C.How an activity of the program was practiced.
D.What cultural meaning the program carried.
30.Why does the author quote He Linxuan's words?
A.To showcase Chinese students'talents.
B.To suggest the international audience's curiosity.
C.To tell the methods of sharing traditional Chinese culture.
D.To imply the program enables students to share the culture confidently.
31.Which is a suitable title for the passage?
A.Words Meet Sounds
B.Poems Touch Hearts
C.Friends Bridge Cultures
D.Skills Build Confidence

In groundbreaking clinical trials in Shanghai, brain implant technology has helped two epilepsy (
patients control language and movement using only their thoughts. This major achievement brings hope to
millions of people who have trouble speaking or moving, and it marks an important step in the development
of brain-computer interfaces(BCIs),systems that turn brain activity into clear language and easy actions.
In the language test,a 43-year-old patient successfully turned his thoughts into Mandarin syllables
()Mandarin is difficult for BCI systems because it has more than 400 syllables, four different tones,
el
and uses several parts of the brain at the same time.Doctors placed electrodes (safely in the
r
patient's language center in a short operation.Just two days after surgery, the patient started training.
Within one week,he reached a 71%correct rate in decoding 142 common Mandarin syllables. His brain
signals were also translated into commands to control robotic hands smoothly, creating natural
human-machine communication.
In the movement test,a 21-year-old patient received similar treatment.Electrodes were placed in
his brain's movement center.Soon after training,he could play table tennis and video games only with
his mind. After two weeks of practice,he was able to use messaging apps, online shopping tools, smart
home devices, and an electric wheelchair. These results show that BCIs can greatly help people with
movement disabilities live more independently and improve their daily lives.
However, today's BCI systems still need external equipment, such as headgear and connecting
wires. The Chinese company NeuroXess, which carried out the trials, plans to solve this problem by
introducing new wireless devices later this year. These future products will support wireless data transfer
and charging, making the technology easier to use.
NeuroXess, founded in 2021,is one of the few invasive BCI companies in the world that tests both
language and movement control on people. Its method is safer than some other technologies because it
effectively avoids damaging brain tissue. This important progress shows that Chinese BCI technology is
developing rapidly and will continue to help disabled people around the world.
32.How does the author support his idea?
A.By giving examples.
B.By analyzing statistics.
C.By making a comparison.
D.By listing different research.
33.What result did the language test achieve?
A.Successful brain signal exchange.
B.Natural human-machine communication.
C.Improvement in human's language center.
D.The patient's mastery of Mandarin syllables.
34.How could today's BCI systems be improved?
A.Increasing charges.
B.Using wireless devices.
C.Relying on external equipment.
D.Transferring data faster.
35.What does the last paragraph imply?
A.NeuroXess has the safest method to do tests.
B.The development of BCI technology is trendy.
C.Chinese BCI technology has a promising future.
D.Disabled people will live independently as wished.

As spring comes alive with blooming flowers and fresh warmth,a new urban walking trend known

popular way to relax and enjoy life in spare time.
36 The rule is simple and easy to follow. Before you go out, choose a color you like in your

activity. It requires no expensive tools or preparations, turning an ordinary walk into an interesting
"treasure hunt".More importantly,it works as a perfect relief for young people who are tired from busy
study and life pressure.38
Color Walk also pushes people to step out of their daily routine and slow down their steps. As they
look for colors carefully, they will notice the unnoticed beauty and vitality in the streets around them.
39 And the natural healing power of colors makes this warm and relaxing experience even more
comforting.
40 In our busy daily lives,we only need to spare 20 minutes for ourselves. On a soft spring
afternoon, pick your favorite color and walk freely through the city streets. While hunting for colors,we
embrace life gently and grow together with the lively city.
A.But what is Color Walk exactly?
B.This kind of walking is not just exercise.
C.It makes the whole learning journey less stressful.
D.It helps them relax their minds and find inner comfort.

Three years ago,when Mia,my younger sister,turned 14,my parents gave her a smartphone as a
birthday gift.At first,it seemed like a harmless school tool. She used it to research school projects, text
friends about homework, and watch funny videos.
But as months passed, something changed. The girl, who once loved hiking with me or painting in
her room, began to disappear behind a shining screen.
Mia's phone became an extension of her hand. She'd wake up scrolling (through social
media, skip breakfast to reply to messages, and stay up late playing games. At the dinner table, her eyes
were glued to the screen. Her grades, once solid B's and A's,started dropping to C's.When Mom asked

parents tried everything. They set screen time limits on her phone, hid it at bedtime, and even banned it
for a week. But Mia would take my old tablet or stay up late texting on a friend's device.
The breakthrough came when a digital wellness coach visited Mia's school. In a talk titled
"Reclaim Your Time",the coach explained how social media is designed to keep users addicted, not to
develop real connections. She shared practical tips:schedule "device-free hours",and replace screen
time with activities that bring real joy."Parents,"she added,"can't just set rules-they need to model
healthy habits too.”
That night,Mia came to me with a determined look."I want to change,"she said. Our parents
agreed to start fresh, giving up strict bans and having open conversations.Mia made a goal:reconnect
with her hobby-doing a social survey,which she'd abandoned.
What she did first was to join the survey club of the school again. She hoped to keep herself busy
and reduce the screen time by doing surveys. That term, the club's survey topic was Screen Time and
Teens'Sleep.Mia was so interested in this topic due to her own experience.

Davis, we are here in court today regarding your traffic violation. How do you defend yourself? Guilty your honor. I know I nearly caused a car accident last friday. I see. Is there any reason that morning? Honestly, no excuse. I overslept and was just running late for work. I was driving fifty two miles per hour in the thirty miles per hour school's one. I take full responsibility. That's a responsible attitude. Tell me, do you drive through that area? Often every weekday you're on our my office is just past the school. I usually slow down, but that day I, I wasn't paying enough attention. I appreciate your honesty. The purpose of a school zone is to protect children. A few minutes late for work is far less important than a children's safety. Don't you agree? absolutely. You're honor. I feel terrible about IT. I could have put kids in danger, and that scares me. I believe you do because you've been honest and understand the seriousness. I'm going to reduce your fine by half, but let this be a strong reminder. Thank you so much, your honor. I really regret my mistake. IT won't happen again. So mr. Davis, we are here in court today regarding your traffic violation. How do you defend yourself? Guilty your honor. I started in eight months trip, four months in thailand, cambodia and vietnam, three months in australia, and one more month in thailand. The first time as the plane was about to land in bangkok, I clearly remember how beautiful the view was from the sky. IT was all Green, nothing like europe. I traveled with a friend in asia and met another friend for surfing in australia. I went there just to serve in warm water, since british water is very cold and I wasn't so interested in tourist attractions. During the trip, I learned a lot from different people. For example, I met a Young tie boy on a train. I only talk to him for about twenty minutes, but I learned a lot about the different culture that surrounded me. Space Exploration in My Eyes
Space exploration represents mankind's fearless quest for the unknown, carrying profound
value for the advancement of civilization.
It boasts far-reaching significance. For one thing,deep-space research drives revolutionary
technological breakthroughs, whose spin-off technologies have greatly boosted agriculture,
medicine and communication,benefiting ordinary people worldwide.For another,cross-border
space cooperation bridges diverse cultures, motivating humanity to jointly tackle global crises
such as resource shortages and environmental degradation.Additionally, the exploration of the
cosmos ignites teenagers'scientific passion and shapes their pioneering spirits.
From my viewpoint, space exploration deserves steady investment and broader international
collaboration.Instead of space competition, all nations ought to join hands to unlock cosmic
mysteries, enabling human society to embrace a brighter future among the stars
