With the development (发展) of smartphones, it’s getting easier to do some reading with ears — by listening to stories, news, novels (小说) and so on.19 This is audio reading (有声阅读).
②Many people like doing audio reading in bed before going to sleep. They like to just lie in bed in the dark20 before they fall asleep. This would be the perfect time to do some audio reading. ④Audio reading is a favourite while a person is exercising. It makes the mind to be free while legs, body and arms are busy. But be careful. Don’t make yourself and others in danger. Let’s take driving for example. If you focus on listening too much, you can’t be a good driver.

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his writing.23 One day he was walking along the seaside (海边). As he looked down at the beach, he saw a person moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought that someone would dance on the beach. So he began to walk faster to catch up.
As he got closer, he saw it was a young man and that the young man wasn’t dancing. Instead, he was reaching down to the shore (岸), picking up something and very softly throwing (扔) it into the sea. As he got closer, he called out, “Good morning! What are you doing?”
The young man looked up and said, “Throwing the starfish into the sea.”
“Why are you throwing the starfish into the sea?”
“The sun is up, and the tide (潮汐) is going out. And if I don’t throw them in time, they’ll die.”24
“But, young man, don’t you know there are miles and miles of beach, and these starfish are all along it?25 You can’t possibly make a difference!”

Here is a story. A man sees a butterfly. The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis (蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help it. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily.27 Surprisingly, the butterfly can’t fly. If the butterfly doesn’t try hard to leave the chrysalis, it can’t fly! The difficulties develop the power in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges (挑战) of life bring out the best in young people and make them fly.
When people are young, meeting and overcoming (战胜) challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful ones of them are those who try their best to overcome the difficulties. One famous businessman, who now owns many big supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man, whose father died when he was twenty, was made to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them.29 Today his brothers and sisters are leading a successful life.
Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organise (组织) some activities for young people which give them challenges, like rock-climbing, camping and volunteer work. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to become powerful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.30
( D )27.Why can’t the butterfly fly?
A.Because it gets out by itself. B.Because the man feels sorry for it.
C.Because it tries to challenge itself. D.Because the man helps it come out.
( A )28.How does the writer tell us to overcome the difficulties in Paragraph 2?
A.By giving examples. B.By listing reasons.
C.By showing numbers. D.By asking questions.
( C )29.What does the underlined word “mature” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Wake up. B.Look up. C.Grow up. D.Get up.
( D )30.What is the main idea of this text?
A.Successful people have a feeling of happiness.
B.Young people must develop their energy actively.
C.Countries should keep being powerful.
D.Challenges of life make young people better.

Good afternoon, everyone. I’m going to tell you a story named Staying by a Stump Waiting for More Hares.
Once upon a time, there was a farmer who worked hard in the fields every day. One day, while working, he saw a hare running fast. It might get scared by something and was in such a hurry that it hit its head on a stump and died. The farmer picked up the dead hare and took it home for dinner happily. From that day on, he threw his hoe away without farming and waited by the tree for hares to come again. But he never saw another hare. When he finally realized his mistake and went back to work in the fields, all his crops were dead.
As the saying goes, “No pain, no gain.” Only through hard work can we achieve success.
