Some of them are small, and some are big. But they all sleep! All animals need sleep. Some sleep a little, others sleep a lot, and some sleep in interesting ways.4  Light Sleepers  Giraffes sleep for just a few hours each day.1 It is dangerous for them to sleep for a long time. Why? First of all, , like a lion, might get them at that time.2 Also, it usually takes giraffes about one minute to stand up and run away at once, so they have to stand up when they sleep. However, they often need to lie down to have a deep sleep for half an hour.  Big Sleepers Koalas live in Australia. They may sleep up to 20 hours a day!3 They wake up, eat leaves and then go right back to sleep. Lions are predators. They get other animals as food. Lions are big sleepers too. When lions are not eating, they usually play and sleep. They can sleep well. After all, who wants to wake up a sleeping lion?  Half-asleep Sleepers Scientists find that dolphins can make half of their brains sleep at a time. The other half stays awake! Like dolphins, when some birds fly far across the sea, they can also sleep with half of their brains and the other half keeps flying. Other birds sleep for a short time when they float (漂浮) on air over the sea. They fly and sleep, fly and sleep. After they get home, they sleep a lot. But more than that, pets can help children in many ways. Veterinarian Dr Katrina Warren says children who keep pets can benefit (得益于) a lot. Here are some good things. 1. A Children often share their thoughts and feelings with pets because pets don’t get angry and don’t give their opinions. Pets are friendly and they have a warm shoulder for children to cry on. Children love to get their pets to join in family activities and celebrations like birthdays.  2. E When looking after a pet, children learn how to care for others and the importance of routine. According to the age of the child and the different pet, children can finish some tasks like feeding or walking the dog.  3. D Most children may sit in front of TVs or computers, spending their weekends on the screens if they have nothing to do. However, playing safe games with pets or walking the dog keeps children away from screens and gets them outside to play.  4. B Visits to the vet (兽医) can help children learn the importance of giving good health care to others. Pets are also the first experience (经历) a child may have with birth and death. They can learn what to do with the illnesses and how to face losses in life.  Pets help children grow as a person. Animals help children learn to show love and respect for others, as well as develop social skills. Children who enjoy reading out loud to their pets may become more relaxed and confident (自信的) and improve their reading skills too. A.Pets can act as friends. B.Teach important life lessons.
