A further study also proved the limitations of text-based communication. In the experiment, teenagers were divided into two groups after finishing a stressful task: One group texted their mothers for comfort, while the other made phone calls. The research found that only voice calls could bring about an obvious drop in teenagers’ stress hormones. Although text messages are not cold or meaningless, they fail to produce the same biological effect as sincere spoken words. From a biological view, hearing a familiar warm voice through voice communication can directly calm people’s nervous system and ease stress. Text-based communication only delivers written information, lacking the real-time emotional feedback. Even carefully written comforting words cannot bring the same positive physical reaction when people face pressure and anxiety. Overall, although digital text-based communication brings certain convenience, it can never replace spoken interaction in building real social connections.
