Sometimes, comfort comes from the simplest things. For me, that has always been sports.
It all started in kindergarten. My dad used to travel for work often. But when he was at home, he always watched his favourite football club. I would sit beside him, wide-eyed, watching the game with him. That’s when I fell in love with football and sports.

Last year, I went through a hard time and felt a little lost. I decided to join a gym. There I tried cycling, yoga, and Pilates (普拉提). At first, it was hard, but soon I found joy again. Working out became my own adventure. Each week, I wondered: Which sport should I try next? Through every run, every game, and every practice, I’ve found peace and happiness. Sports have truly become a part of me.

Long ago, on the Mongolian Steppes (蒙古草原), there lived a young herdsman (牧民) named Namjil. Night after night, he kept having the same dream. In his dream, a white mare (母马), shining like snow under moonlight, whispered: “Come to the Valley of Eternal Spring when the moon is full.”
On the night of the full moon, Namjil rode through the dark grasslands until he found the valley. The mare stood there with big wings. “I am Jonon Khar, the last sky horse.” she said, “Soon, I will be too old to fly. I will lose my wings and disappear forever. But you have a horse’s heart, Namjil. I wish to spend my last flying years with someone who loves my spirit, not my magic.” Namjil never tied her down, and they became friends. Each night, Jonon Khar carried him over the grasslands, and he would sing. His voice floated down from the sky like wind, and people stopped to wonder at its beauty.
But a greedy khan (可汗) heard of the magical horse and wanted her for himself. He ordered Namjil to give the horse to him. Namjil refused and was then thrown into prison. Every night, Jonon Khar flew to the prison window and waited. The khan grew angrier and ordered an archer (弓箭手) to shoot her. The arrow struck her heart, and she fell.
After Namjil was freed, he missed Jonon Khar very much. To remember her, he made an instrument from her body. He carved (雕刻) a horse’s head from her head and shaped a body (琴身) and a bow (琴弓) from her leg bones. He then twisted (缠绕) hair from her white mane (鬃毛) into strings. When he played the instrument, the sound rose like wind over the Mongolian Steppes. He named his creation the Morin Khuur — the horse-head fiddle (马头琴). And people say Jonon Khar still flies, forever, inside the song.
9. What does the underlined word “its” refer to?
A. The sky horse’s wing. B. Namjil’s beautiful voice.
C. The cool night wind. D. The quiet grassland.
10. The underlined word “greedy” most probably means _________

A. To sell it for lots of money.
B. To keep the memory of Jonon Khar.
C. To play music for the greedy khan.
D. To teach others to sing nice songs.
12. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Jonon Khar left the grassland voluntarily.
B. The khan finally got the magical sky horse.
C. True friendship can last forever in heart.
D. Namjil disliked flying with the sky horse.

Have you ever felt a day pass by super quickly? This summer, it really did! In July and August, scientists recorded several of the fastest days in recent history. On these days, the Earth spun a tiny bit faster than normal—about one thousandth (千分之一) of a second faster.
We all know a day is 24 hours long. That’s 1,440 minutes, or 86,400 seconds. That’s how long it usually takes the Earth to spin around once. But that’s only an average. In reality, the Earth’s spin (旋转) changes slightly every day. Sometimes it’s slower. Sometimes, like this summer, it’s faster.
For thousands of years, people used the Earth’s spin to tell time. But in the 1950s, scientists began using atomic clocks. These clocks are based on how fast atoms vibrate (原子振动). They are so correct that they can measure tiny changes in the Earth’s speed — just a few milliseconds (毫秒). That is far quicker than the blink (眨眼) of an eye!
In July 2024, the fastest day ever was recorded. The Earth finished its spin about 1.65 milliseconds early. This year, July 9 and August 5 were also “fast days.” On each, the Earth turned about 1.3 milliseconds faster than usual.
What makes our planet speed up or slow down? The moon’s gravity plays a big role. As the moon orbits (绕……旋转) the Earth, sometimes it’s closer, and sometimes it’s farther away. And the moon’s orbit (轨道) itself doesn’t stay fixed—it moves in space. Other factors, such as the Earth’s atmosphere (大气层) and main wind systems, can also affect the Earth’s spin. It may be surprising that the Earth’s core (核心), deep inside our planet, can affect its speed as well.
Even though we’ve had some fast days recently, scientists say that over millions of years, Earth is actually slowing down. It loses a couple of milliseconds every hundred years. So, if you feel like time is flying, enjoy it—our planet won’t keep up this pace (步伐) forever.
13. What can atomic clocks help scientists do?
A. Change the Earth’s spinning speed.
B. Slow down the running of time naturally.
C. Make each day exactly twenty-four hours.
D. Record small speed changes of the Earth.
14. Which of the following can influence Earth’s spin speed?
A. People’s daily activities.
B. Weather on other planets.
C. The moon’s gravity and Earth’s core.
D. Different kinds of modern clocks.
15. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Earth will spin faster and faster all the time.
B. Short fast days won’t last for a long time.
C. People can stop Earth from slowing down.
D. Each hundred years brings longer summer days.
16. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Blink and the Day Is Gone!
B. Sorry We don’t Have Time.
C. Hurry to Go Help the Earth!
D. Changes of Human Sense of Time.

Don’t Let the Time Thief Steal Your Sleep
During school days, my schedule (日程表) feels like a train that never stops. I rush to class, rush through homework, rush to bed—only to repeat it all the next day. By the time I finally sit down, the day is already over. It seems like everything is “stealing” my time: homework, chores, my busy school day…And the time that belongs to me gets pressed into the corners.
So, on the first day of the winter vacation, I made a promise to myself: This time, I’m taking my time back. I stayed up late every night to make up for all the free time I’d missed during the semester (学期).
At first, it felt amazing. I climbed into bed, pulled my blanket up, and unlocked my phone. The screen lit up my face like a tiny flashlight. I played games, binge-watched TV shows, and scrolled (滚动) through social media until my eyes felt heavy. This is freedom! I thought. Why did grown-ups always say they didn’t have enough time? They just don’t know the magic of staying up late.
But soon, I realized I wasn’t beating a “time thief”—I was feeding one. Even though I slept until noon, I woke up feeling tired. I couldn’t focus on my favourite comic books, and even the funniest videos didn’t make me laugh. I had “free time,” but I didn’t have the energy to enjoy it. This thief didn’t just take away my sleep—it stole my fresh mornings, my good mood, and my ability to stay focused.
So this semester, I’m making a change. No more blaming (责备) myself for wanting my own time. But real free time doesn’t steal your sleep, energy, or joy. I will manage my time wisely and try to keep a balance between school and life. After all, when I take care of my time, my time takes care of me—and that’s how I truly win my life back.

A. kind and warm B. wanting too much C. brave and calm D. easy to satisfy
11. Why did Namjil make the horse-head fiddle?
【答案】9. B 10. B 11. B 12. C

根据第三段第一、二句“But a greedy khan (可汗) heard of the magical horse and wanted her for himself. He ordered Namjil to give the horse to him.”可知,可汗听说神马后想要占为己有,并命令Namjil把马给他。这些行为表明可汗非常贪婪,想要占有不属于自己的东西。因此“greedy”意为“贪婪的”,对应“wanting too much”。
【11题详解】
根据第四段第二句“To remember her, he made an instrument from her body.”可知,Namjil制作马头琴是为了纪念Jonon Khar。

【答案】13. D 14. C 15. B 16. A

【21题详解】
句意:一束明亮温暖的光突然从天空降落。
空格后为介词短语“from the sky”,结合下文“It lit up the whole yard”可知,光从天空“出现/降临”,fell“落下”符合“光从天空降落”语境;rose“升起”、flew“飞过”、jumped“跳”均与from the sky搭配不当。
【22题详解】
句意:两个矮个子外星人走了出来。
