Some kids hate being home alone—they feel bored or even scared (惊恐的). But I see it as a super chance to learn to do things by myself. Last month, my parents went to Shanghai on business for three days. “Cook simple meals, feed Ah-Fu, and don’t stay up late,” Dad said. “We trust you!”
On the first day, I tried to cook eggs, but I forgot to turn down the heat, so they turned black. “Yuck!” I said. I ended up eating some biscuits and bananas instead. What was worse, I forgot to give the cat, Ah-Fu, her lunch. She looked at me with big green eyes, as if she were saying, “Bad food, no care!”
The next day started better. I remembered to feed Ah-Fu in the morning, but after school, I got lost in playing a video game and forgot Ah-Fu’s lunch again. She cried loudly “Miao!” and walked round my feet again and again. I felt very sorry and gave her more fish snacks.
On the third day, I set an alarm for 6:30 a.m. and cooked eggs again. This time they were perfect. Both Ah-Fu and I finished our breakfast happily and I even cleaned the kitchen!
When Mom and Dad came back, they saw the clean floor and Ah-Fu’s full bowl. Mom hugged me proudly and said, “Our son can look after himself now!” Now I love being home alone—it makes me confident and shows I am already growing up!

Liang Sicheng is known as the “Father of Modern Chinese Architecture (建筑)”. He studied Western architecture in the US, but he was interested in Chinese architecture. After realizing there was a long way to go in protecting and developing Chinese architecture, he returned to China.
In the 1930s and 1940s, Liang and his wife, Lin Huiyin, traveled across China to record ancient buildings. They visited over 2,700 historical sites. It is not easy for them to record buildings. Most of them were in different parts of the country and the traffic was poor. The couple (夫妻)could only go there on foot or other basic ways. However, they never gave up. Their hard work paid off. Liang’s book A History of Chinese Architecture came out. It became very important for people to learn about Chinese traditional architecture.
Liang thought that architecture is not just buildings—it is a symbol of society and a creation of the people. With this idea, he tried his best to protect old buildings. In 1949, he took a job as one of Beijing’s city planners and used his knowledge to help the city keep its historical charm. Besides protecting old buildings, Liang also wanted to help young people learn about architecture. He set up the Department of Architecture in two universities. This gave many young Chinese a good chance to study this subject and carry on his work.
