Just as I can imagine, China is sure to be a land with a long history and rich culture. And it is also known for its polite and friendly people.
On a sunny morning, Li Ming invited me to his home. When I arrived, I noticed some strange plants hanging on the door. I wondered why his family put them there. He explained that it was because the day was Chongyang Festival, which is a day for people to show respect (尊敬) and wishes for their elders. Its celebration takes place on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar. And the plants, dogwoods (茱萸), can help keep away bad luck and bring people happiness. His family prepared chrysanthemum wine (菊花酒) and tasty Chongyang cakes for me. What a really nice treat! They told me chrysanthemums are a symbol of long life and health in Chinese culture.
After lunch, Li’s parents invited me to go climbing in Xiangshan Park. While walking to the top, I was told the traditional custom of climbing the mountain came from a lively folk story in the Eastern Han Dynasty. It is said that there was a kind young man called Huan Jing. One day he met an old man who told him a secret—something terrible would happen to his family that day. He suggested that Huan should take his family to the top of a hill. Huan followed his advice and all his family’s lives were saved. Today, people climb high on the day for good luck, in the hope that the elders will live much longer.
The customs of this festival all relate to people’s health. So it is also a day to remind people to put more attention on their health and family. What a fascinating experience I had!

阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
Since tea spread from China worldwide, it has become one of the most popular drinks in the world. Different countries have their own tea cultures, like afternoon tea in England.
The tradition of afternoon tea is a very special part of English culture. The custom of drinking tea became popular in England during the 1660s. It was not until the mid-19th century that the idea of “afternoon tea” first appeared.
Afternoon tea is served in the mid-afternoon, between lunch and a late dinner. The idea came from Anna, the seventh Duchess (公爵夫人) of Bedford, in 1840. At the time, many families would eat a late dinner at about 8 p.m., which was one of only two main meals each day, and the other was a mid-morning meal.
With a long time between breakfast and dinner, Anna would become hungry around 4 o’ clock in the afternoon. So she asked for some tea, bread, butter and cakes to be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.
Later, Anna continued it, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for “tea and a walk in the fields”.
Others soon picked up on the idea. By the 1880s, afternoon tea became a social event for many ladies. They would be dressed beautifully to be served in the sitting room between four and five o’ clock, talking about the latest news, their daily life and fashion.
Today’s afternoon tea is simpler than traditional afternoon tea. It is just a biscuit or small cake and a cup of tea. However, there is one thing that has never changed—the meaning of afternoon tea.

Students at Changchun University of Science and Technology have invented a device (设备) that can turn the pages of a book with just the blink (眨眼) of eyes.
“The invention, which uses brain-sensing (脑感应) technology, could make it easier for disabled people or the old people to read books in a smart way,” Qi Huanqiang, one of the inventors, said.
The team of five students was from the university’s electrical information and engineering school and said they came up with the plan in a week.
The team showed the device at a special event at the university. Qi wore a headband and every time he blinked three times in two seconds, the device turned a page of a book. He said the headband uses brain-sensing technology to turn brain activity into digital signals (数字信号). Then the digital signals were sent to the device that could turn the pages.
Qi also said the invention was not expensive and could help a lot of people. It quickly became popular online. And many people also encouraged the young inventors to make the device even better. But not everyone was on the same page. One person said that the device could not turn pages back and that it was not really useful. Another said, “I don’t think it’s helpful. That means I can’t blink at all until I’ve finished reading a page.”
This invention, though not perfect, is still a good thing. The inventors want to help people, and that’s a good lesson for all science lovers. It’s a great start and with more work, who knows what amazing things they might create next!
