Daniel, Sandy and Simon are in the lab.
Simon: Let’s do an experiment. I fill a jar with water. I cover the top with a piece of cardboard and hold it. Then I turn the jar upside down and take my hand off the cardboard. Can you guess what will happen?
Daniel: I think the floor will get wet. We should do this experiment outside, Simon.
Sandy: I think the cardboard will hold the water.
Daniel: I don’t think so.
Sandy: You think the water will pour out, Daniel. I think the water will stay in the jar. Let’s do the experiment to test whose opinion is correct.
Simon: Good idea, Sandy. That is called the scientific method.
Sandy: I am so sure of my opinion that Simon can do the experiment over your head. I know you won’t get wet.
Daniel: Well, let’s try.
Simon: Are you ready, Daniel?
Daniel: No! Wait! (He puts on a raincoat and sits down.) Now I think I’m ready.
Sandy: Simon, take your hand off the cardboard.
Daniel: No!(Daniel closes his eyes tightly, and Simon takes his hand off the cardboard. The water stays in the jar.)
Sandy: See, Daniel!
Daniel: How is that possible?
Simon: The force of the air keeps the water in the jar. It is strong enough to hold the water.
Daniel: Wow!
Simon: So what have we discovered?
Sandy: We have discovered the air pressure (压力) helps the cardboard hold the water in the jar.
Simon: Right. What do you conclude, Daniel?
Daniel: I conclude that air pressure is stronger than I thought. And you, Sandy?

Chen Ning Yang—A Giant of Modern Physics
Chen Ning Yang, one of the most influential physicists of the twentieth century, passed away in Beijing on October 18, 2025, at the age of 103. His ideas transformed our understanding of nature and shaped the very foundations of modern physics.
Born in 1922 in Hefei, Anhui Province, Yang showed exceptional talent in mathematics and science from an early age. He studied at Southwest Associated University during wartime China and later completed his PhD at the University of Chicago in 1948, under the supervision of the famous physicist Enrico Fermi.
In 1956, Yang and his colleague Tsung-Dao Lee proposed a revolutionary idea—that the law of parity conservation might not hold in weak nuclear interactions. At the time, most scientists believed nature treated “left” and “right” equally. The following year, experimental physicist Chien-Shiung Wu confirmed the effect, proving that the universe does, in fact, distinguish between left and right.
For this discovery, Yang and Lee shared the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics, becoming the first Chinese scientists ever to receive this honor. The finding of parity violation was more than a scientific breakthrough—it opened a new window into the structure of matter and laid the groundwork for later developments in particle physics.
Yang’s influence extended far beyond one discovery. In 1954, together with Robert Mills, he introduced what is now known as the Yang-Mills theory, a mathematical framework that describes the fundamental forces of nature. This theory later became a cornerstone of the Standard Model, the central theory explaining how subatomic particles interact. After decades in the United States, Yang returned to China in the 1990s and became a professor at Tsinghua University. He encouraged international cooperation and devoted himself to scientific education in China. Many students remember his humility, his sharp mind, and his belief that true science requires both curiosity and courage.
Chen Ning Yang’s life tells a story of brilliance, integrity, and dedication. From a young scholar in wartime China to a Nobel laureate whose ideas changed physics forever, his journey reminds us that great discoveries are born from questioning the impossible.
54. What made Chen Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee’s idea revolutionary?
A. It proved that gravity affects all objects equally
B. It suggested that nature treats “left” and “right” differently.
C. It showed that time could go backward
D. It explained how all the forces in nature are connected.
55. What was confirmed by Chien-Shiung Wu’s experiment?
A. The law of parity conservation was always “correct”.
B. The universe shows no difference between left and right.
C. The parity violation predicted by Yang and Lee was real.
D. Atoms behave exactly the same under all conditions.
56. Which of the following best describes the Yang-Mills theory?
A. A method for predicting earthquakes.
B. A mathematical model describing fundamental forces.
C. A law explaining chemical reactions.
D. A theory about astronomy and stars.
57. What is the main message of the article?
A. Great discoveries come from questioning accepted ideas.
B. Science success depends mostly on luck.
C. Fame is more important than curiosity.
D. Teamwork matters more than courage.

On May 10, 2025, the Jiangsu Football City League started at Zhenjiang Sports and Exhibition Center. It is a provincial amateur (业余) football competition, but it became very popular in China quickly. After only four rounds, more than 190,000 people watched the games in person. Online, hundreds of millions of people watched them too, according to Xinhua.
The league, also called “Su Super League”, runs from May to November. There are 13 teams, each from a different city in Jiangsu. First, all 13 teams play against each other once. Then the top 8 teams move to the knockout stage. They play to decide the top 4 teams, and finally the champion.
One big reason for the league’s success is that many common people can join. There are 516 players in all. Over 65% of them have different jobs—like college students, teachers, and delivery workers. Liu Tong, from Jiangsu Sports Bureau, said, “This is a new way to do basic-level soccer. It makes the game closer to people.”
The league is also popular because of its fun cultural vibe (气氛). Teams are named after local favourites: Wuxi is known for honey peaches, and Nanjing for its tasty salted duck. Soccer commentator (评论员) Xu Yifan said, “The League’s success shows that if we focus on local culture, let more people join in and have good games, community soccer can really work.”
Since the league began, slogans like “match comes first, friendship fourteenth” have been popular online. They show the competition between Jiangsu’s 13 cities. All 13 cities are in China’s top 100 for GDP. People call their competitors the “thirteen brothers”. A Nanjing soccer fan said, “We compete hard but we are like family!”

My growth in Grade 9
Dear Editor:
I am a Grade 9 student from Sunshine Middle School. My name is Li Hua. I was born in the Year of the Tiger. In fact, I'm a little shy. But I am organized and I can plan everything well.
Since Grade 9, I have made progress in English. I used to get low marks and could not speak it well. But I didn’t lose heart. In class, I listened carefully and read English every day. I asked the teacher for help when I met difficult problems. Now I am not afraid of speaking English. I am preparing for an English speech.
Grade Nine is full of challenges. I hope I can go to my dream high school.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
